Other than that, she said she did like getting the new clothes, learning to speak English, and getting away from her abusive mother for awhile. Said the nuns were fine to her.
Obviously there were some serious abuses, but it’s pretty damn obvious the reservation system turning Indians into dependent wards of the state is the main cause of current social problems.
People – residential schools came about as a way to educate nomadic people. The other choice was no education. I remember maybe 50 or more years ago, prior to the development of the reserve welfare system, natives were usually out hunting, trapping, doing farm work, or other odd jobs. There was little economic employment on reserves but then then went out to find work. Whatever happened to all the people we used to hear from that liked residential schools. I guess they have been told to STFU.

Canadian aboriginals’ biggest problem is that they were socialized before everybody else. If there is any “systemic” issue here, this is it.
A problem of higher crime rates among the native “community” (which is to use that term very loosely, given the myriad bands with varied backgrounds) cannot be solved merely through the sentencing process, and in fact it is irresponsible to even attempt to do so. Problems should be addressed at the root, not superficially.
Besides, like the fraud of “employment equity” or “affirmative action”, the persons who obtain the benefit are not necessarily the same ones who suffered in the past. “Social justice” is not justice.
Billions of dollars are being spent on aboriginal affairs every year in Canada, and the results have been mixed at best. There are probably more success stories than you hear in the media, but there are a lot of dismal failures too, and plenty of corruption. The government is currently looking at introducing property rights on reserves, which is one step in the right direction.
I’m acquainted with a couple of aboriginals. Nice guys, decent and responsible people, no different from you or me so far as I can tell.
As for the Supreme Court, perhaps the country could vote on whether to retain justices on an individual basies every few years, so the public can express their disapproval over foolish decisions and Charter of Rights interpretations.

Oh I see. So since the courts feel aboriginals are uncontrollably and now justifiably prone to violent behaviour – would the supreme court find my increased willingness to protect myself by use of lethal force when dealing with aboriginals just as justified?
