  1. we can`t sell our body parts because it does not fit the socilaist format in which a government bureaucrat gets to make all our decisions. my kids have use invetro fertilization and they have paid many thousands of dollars to have children.

But I heard that if you do not sign the Organ Donor card on your license expressly forbidding the State not to harvest your organs, the state can harvest your organs.   4. The article refers to “the demand from people who would like nothing more than to realize their dream of having a child of their own.”
    It’s not clear to me how a couple would define this process as “having a child of their own” any more than raising an adopted child.
    So much of the discussion reveals that many people regard children as a commodity. And while many of us regard that attitude as appalling, involving government in the matter only makes things worse.

  7. Yes, please start paying good money for sperm and egg donations. Then the crackheads will have an additional source of quick cash to help them get their fix. What could possibly go wrong?

  9. While I agree 100% with the Grey Lady I would still like to point out to Pete that his point sort of argues itself. I know I would rather crackheads got legal money from jerkin it at a sperm bank than robbing a liquor store.

  12. Grey Lady, why do you think I’m advocating government protection? I’m merely pointing out the fact that when you’re paying cash for sperm, you’re not going to be getting “quality” donations. You’ll get plenty of people who really don’t care about the end result of what they’re doing, they just want some cash. And despite what some people may think, there’s no way to be 100% effective at screening. I don’t know if you’ve ever had contact with a child suffering from fetal alcohol syndrome, or a crack baby for that matter. My point is, do we want to increase the risk of these types of problems cropping up the current system? I would prefer it if we didn’t encourage and enable the losers of our society to be active participants in the reproduction cycle.

  15. The law in Canada is the result of morbid fascination with preventing a human life or life as a human that is deeply deeply rooted in leftist ideologies. For this (ideological) and only reason, “progressively” minded are vehemently oppose progress in the treatment of medical condition of infertility.
    Every year thousands of Canadians travel to USA to seek help in IVF surrogacy clinics. Surrogate donors are scrupulously screened and matched with parents’ background: physical features, educations or even personality. The treatment was available in Canada before Liberal government re-invented the ethics: money transfers that are not taxation are unethical.

    1) My child, adopted, is mine.
    2) Fetal Alcohol Syndrom and crack babies cannot be carried in sperm or egg donations, they come from in-utero exposure from a drug or alcohol using mother. Just the facts, people!

  18. the rat’s point #1: “My child, adopted, is mine.” Hear! Hear! That is the brave and selfless attitude of every adoptive parent I’ve met.
    We should consider, however, how government policy has led to a steep decline in adoption (particularly adoption within the country) over the past couple of decades: 1) encouragement of abortion; 2) expensive, increasing, and still-inadequate support of single parenthood; 3) driving faith-based adoption agencies out of the work; 4) privileging “reproductive technologies” over adoption, etc.

    The president and CEO of the Planned Parenthood abortion business in Lubbock, Texas was arrested yesterday for indecent exposure at a local baseball field where children play.
    As KCBD reports, “According to Lubbock Police, Tony Ray Thornton, 56, was arrested at the baseball fields inside of Mackenzie Park. According to the incident report, Thornton was taken into custody at 3:25 Monday afternoon. He was booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center and released from jail Tuesday morning around 11 a.m.”
    The news station reports that Thornton has worked with the abortion business for several years and the Lubbock Planned Parenthood has had its share of problems.
    Previously, the Planned Parenthood facility in Lubbock, Texas threw away medical records in a trash bin outside the building.

    If I may be so bold:
    One only gets fetal alcohol and crack babies from a woman who abuses her child while it is in the womb.
    Unless there has been newer cutting edge research done, that I know nothing about, the donations of eggs or sperm have no effect on these sorts of “conditions”.
    I tend to agree that one gets what they pay for, let the buyer beware.

  23. This law is absolutely asinine and reflects a statist mindset that is quite repugnant. I don’t believe it would stand up to a court challenge. At this time prostitution is legal. That means it would be legal for a woman seeking another males sperm to pay him to have sex with her. Really all that is in question is the manner in which the males sperm are deposited into the uterus and thus the law, as it is written, is in conflict with the law that says prostitution is legal. AI is just prostitution by proxy.
    After reading this article thought of an interesting experiment which would probably make some leftist heads explode. One population that seems to be very under-represented in abortion clinics are Native Indians. It seems that the women would rather have fetal alcohol syndrome kids than abort them; raising them isn’t the women’s problem considering that most Native Indians consider the state to be their true parent. All that would be necessary would be to go to a bar frequented by natives, and ask drunk pregnant women if they’d have an abortion for $100? I suspect that a lot of them would sign over their fetus for enough money to drink for another night or two. A great way to obtain fetal material for genetic research and reduce the incidence of fetal alcohol syndrome. What could possibly go wrong?

    Its that pesky property rights thing again. You don’t precisely -own- your kidney, any more than you -own- your house in Caledonia. Its more or less yours on sufferance from the feds, unless or until they (or some in-favor victim group) find a better use for it than filtering your blood.

  28. The foundation of capitalism – the political system that is consistent with the principles of justice – is trade.
    Since the left hates all these good things, one of its major tactics is to try to oppose as many transactions as possible that are based on trade rather than handouts. This is just another example.
    There is a huge difference between slavery, i.e. coercively treating other people as commodities, and actions like selling a kidney, which is treating one of your own body parts as a commodity.
