Weather Watchers

Keeping an eye on the horizon, prairie style:

CHEYENNE — State representatives on Friday advanced legislation to launch a study into what Wyoming should do in the event of a complete economic or political collapse in the United States. The task force would look at the feasibility of Wyoming issuing its own alternative currency, if needed. And House members approved an amendment Friday by state Rep. Kermit Brown, R-Laramie, to have the task force also examine conditions under which Wyoming would need to implement its own military draft, raise a standing army, and acquire strike aircraft and an aircraft carrier.

They’re not saying, they’re just sayin’:

“I don’t think there’s anyone in this room today what would come up here and say that this country is in good shape, that the world is stable and in good shape — because that is clearly not the case,” state Rep. Lorraine Quarberg, R-Thermopolis, said. “To put your head in the sand and think that nothing bad’s going to happen, and that we have no obligation to the citizens of the state of Wyoming to at least have the discussion, is not healthy.”

  1. Ummmm…Wyoming is landlocked. What would they do with an aircraft carrier.Have it patrol the Boysen Reservoir maybe looking for park violations.

  2. “… and an aircraft carrier”
Until that (and bearing in mind that in the absence of Federal intervention the Governor can effectively command his State`s National Guard) I was pretty much nodding in agreement.
Though a craft that could carry perhaps two fighters on major rivers might be what is in mind.

  3. To put your head in the sand and think that nothing bad’s going to happen
At the very least that policy is begging for a kitty to poop on your head.

  4. It is about time someone looked out the window and saw the building was on fire.
Now if the Republican would do the same.

  5. Wyoming is landlocked. What would they do with an aircraft carrier.
    Think outside the box.
Imagine how hard it would be to torpedo that carrier…submarines are a carrier’s worst nightmare you know.

  6. The aircraft carrier might not be that daft after all. Assuming you could just drop one in the sand in the middle of the state (ok, that’s a long shot) you’d have an instant airfield, barracks, mess hall, air force and supporting craft like choppers and AWACs. Tons of missiles and various other ammo including nukes. It’s like one-stop shopping for a military presence.

  7. The task force would look at the feasibility of Wyoming issuing its own alternative currency, if needed. . .

Hey, Alberta could do that too. Issue its own currency backed by oil, call it the ‘Albarrel’.

  8. Good for Wyoming. A lot of people are doing this on their own … I do it, but I will pass on the aircraft carrier. If I am wrong I will have some extra stuff to consume, if I am right I will look like a genius.
Getting ready for a very bad time is a win-win thing.

  9. About 700 Km from Oregon coast to Wyoming area…
Moorage fees? Last I checked aircraft carriers park where they want. Of course they come with Aegis cruisers, and tenders and such…
Nope probably better to build an AFB, maybe ask Montana and North Dakota for a few spare Minuteman ICBMs.
Scary thought exercise that’s closer than they want to admit.
    [shudder]

  10. Issue its own currency backed by oil….

Moammar Gadhafi had that very same notion and see what it got him.

  11. I can see the need for an alternative to the US dollar, but an aircraft carrier? Someone is thinking BIG.
There is an active Air Force Base in Wyoming, EF Warren AFB but it has no USAF warplanes “The 90th Operations Group has command and control of 15 missile bases and 150 Minuteman III missiles in the tri-state area” according to the base website. So they could become a nuclear power as well depending on how the cookie crumbles.
Wyoming has lots of fossil fuels, some uranium and two rare things – a budget surplus and a government that looks ahead.

  12. Washington (State) …
“Representatives in the Washington State legislature have introduced a bill that would move the state into compliance with Article 1, Section 10 of the US Constitution, requiring only gold and silver be recognized as legal tender.

  13. Sounds like the boys in WY have been doing some thinking. Somebody has noticed that maybe the house is on fire as FP noted at 5:47.
We have our own former PM Paul Martian thinking outside the box as well. His solution is Chapter 11 for the miscreants who didn’t notice their house catching fire either.
It’s going to be an interesting year. The Eurotrash trying to save themselves through some economic slight of hand. Barry O trying to save himself with pump prices at $1.50/litre. And then we have AB who has had the same party in power for the past 40 years? It’s election time….comedy central.

  14. Wyoming just has a National Guard which the state should be able to use when the feds aren’t. They do not have a State Guard or State Defense Force unlike some states. It might not hurt to set up a largely unpaid volunteer State Guard of trained soldiers to organize security if the stuff hit the fan. I wouldn’t start investing in more than small arms. I wouldn’t do any training as long as the US Army and the National Guard are around. Carrier – no.

  15. Georgia …
“Legislators in at least ten states have introduced bills in the past few years to allow state commerce to be conducted with gold and silver.
As we reported, Georgia state Rep. Bobby Franklin (R) recently reintroduced legislation to force his state to conduct all monetary transactions with U.S. gold or silver coins — including the payment of taxes.”

  16. Thanks marc…now we know why the upcoming election is not garnering any enthusiasm. They are in survival mode. Fugedabout Washington.
Frankly, I’m encouraged. It will work as long as they don’t come up with ‘a governing body in control’…hopefully they can thrive in independence and liberty.

  17. to implement its own military draft, raise a standing army, and acquire strike aircraft and an aircraft carrier.
Oh just what we need in these times: more and bigger state government! Now with impossibly useless aircraft carrier!

  18. “an aircraft carrier.”
Tsk tsk, still denying climate change I see. Rising sea levels, anyone?

  19. More than one landlocked European and South American country maintained navies. It is true that, if they found a place to put that aircraft carrier, it could serve as “an instant airfield, barracks, mess hall” etc., but it would more likely become a native-run casino.

  20. good for wyoming, but maybe they should just join up with a few other states and throw that bum oboma and his obomination out and take their country back!
togeather they already have everything they need.
planes, boats, nukes, you name it..they got it.

  21. At a guess, the aircraft carrier would be a cooperative venture with other like minded
states to assert residual ownership over the property of a collapsed federal government
run by traitors who might be thinking of leasing or selling stuff to China to stay in business.

  22. When it finally falls apart. Some States as well as Provinces. Will band together for mutual protection. Those States with nukes will be sought after
Its why the Western Provinces have instituted across the board trade agreements. Including even in education. Tradesmen now can work in any Western Province without recertification. Alberta has certain agreements with Montana. Like tourism costs. Where even thinking of allowing free workers across the boarder legislation.

  23. what I want to know is why do so many rifle toting camo-clad types show up at the local sporting good store mumbling about Big Gubbamint.
p.s. when the end comes, what good will the rifle be in the face of clouds of beetles consuming all your crops?

  24. My guess is that the aircraft carrier will be in the Pacific Ocean, and probably jointly owned with Idaho, Montana, and Utah. It might be useful for making California, Oregon, and Washington be reasonable about forming a free trade agreement.
Unfortunately, where this would have been an absurdity several years ago, it is now simply an unlikely event.

  25. A strong signal that the federal government is in worse shape than the New York Times would have us believe.

  26. “Hey, Alberta could do that too. Issue its own currency backed by oil, call it the ‘Albarrel’.”
“Moammar Gadhafi had that very same notion and see what it got him.”
So you’re saying the Alberta PC party would be next in line for regime change?
    What’s the downside?
