It was a swing and a miss for the Occupy movement planning to protest at the Monsanto Research Centre northeast of Saskatoon on Saturday night. […]
Activist and key Occupy Saskatoon organizer and owner of alternative bookstore Turning the Tide Peter Garden explained what happened.
“I got a call about noon [Saturday], saying that the people from Regina weren’t showing up,” he said.
“Apparently there wasn’t enough people, and they had a car that broke down.”
Of course, none of that stopped CKOM radio from reading their anti-Monsanto propaganda on the air.

So they were going to have a massive protest but their car broke down? I suspect that even had the protest gone off without a hitch, it would have failed to impress.
Hard to build momentum if the grass-roots doesn’t have the wherewithal to marshall a few dependable vehicles between themselves. Snicker.
Why protest Monsanto? Their scientists deserve the Nobel Peace Prize for developing glyphosate. This has been the singular greatest benefit to the environment (stopping agricultural soil erosion) and to global food security in the last 50 years.
Couldn’t organize a . . .
Screwup in a whorehouse . . .
Drunk up in a brewery . . .
Surprised they didn’t get a ride from Air Force One.
This sooooo reminds me of how every half-baked group of entitlement nitwits in Vancouver issues press releases from the basements of their mothers and … without fail … radio station CKNW reads them verbatim as if it’s breaking news. Pathetic!
The car broke down and the occupation failed???
Now if they’d had a Prius, or a GM re-Volt they could have had two to four people there.
What happened? Was there a power outage in Regina and they couldn’t charge up the Chevy Volt? Oh, who am I kidding? They would have to have a job to afford a newer car. I guess mommy and daddy’s hand-me-down K-Car wasn’t up for the roadtrip.
HEE HEE HAW HAW……giggle…….
WalterF, exactly and well said. Roundup really worked well for us in this area. There are no more days of not seeing across the yard because of dirt flying through the air and there is no summerfallow anymore unless it is required to help clean up a field.
Monsanto is right up there with ‘Big Oil’ in the feeble mind of the leftard. They are unable to think past their immediate agony of living in reality.
Cbc pointed their crooked finger at Monsanto with this story, including pictures of Round-up,a few weeks ago. The chicken littles lapped it up.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/story/2012/01/12/super-weed-alberta.html
One car breaks down and they have to call off a demonstration.
One freakin car, what were they, midget clowns?
Well, good thing they didn’t get there..they coulda been ‘tazed!’ CBC now whining about poor occupier in US that the evil cops zapped.
I have to agree with WalterF, the biggest invention for agriculture next to the self propelled tractor. Our farm can grow alot more grain than it used to, we have to be able to feed the world growing population. It has made my farm very profitable.
BTW,just announced on cbc we can now ‘live tweet’ while Solomon is on-air,and they will respond..yeah,sure they will.
A car? A dirty, filthy, carbon-belching car? Occupiers don’t need no steenkin’ cars. They are supposed to alight from winged unicorns that poop Skittles, aren’t they?
A Brocken down car for occupy progressives is,
A flat tire and too lazy to check in the trunk for a spare.
“car broke down” translates as “Couldn’t find a long enough extension cord for the Prius.”
They will try again when the weather gets better. Wow, talk about determination to shut down projects they know nothing about. Maybe Monsanto should offer donuts and coffee when they show up. Warp their little minds. Could even have a Monanto marked tow truck follow their K car to make sure they make it.
Monsanto–makers of Roundup weed killer, AKA “defoilage” agent. Glysophate has changed the face of agriculture.
Too bad they can`t devise a chemical to spray protesters so they could “leave.”
@plainsdrifter: there is such a spray capable of dispersing the occupets, it’s called a shower.
Should such a device be inavailable, a firehose may serve in lieu.
Too bad they can`t devise a chemical to spray protesters so they could “leave.”
Well they have a Heat Gun that has been Crowd tested and ready for the big Show. It burns the guts out with only a little initial discomfort.
Don’t have to arrest them; just scrape them up & serve with onions
Another important point about glyphosate other then the fact that it revolutionized agriculture is that it has almost the same toxicity as table salt
Is there any truth to the Sierra Club’s view that Glyphosate is a nasty and dangerous chemical, specifically when mixed with other chemicals to make Roundup?
Not stirring the pot, I just don’t know.
Pat
should try a little Round-up on those hairylegged occupy girls.
” Of course, none of that stopped CKOM radio from reading their anti-Monsanto propaganda on the air.”
And THAT !! demonstrates what is wrong with the world.
Most people I know can see through the environMENTAL nut-case’s trumped up agenda. Most people period can.
Our beloved media is the problem. The majority of the editors and journos are either dumb or agenda driven. They are also a clear and present danger to the health and well being of the people.
Well soon there will be wheat production like in the past, and Canada can reclaim the title: “Food Basket of the World.” With the CWB having lost it’s monopoly on wheat, the farmers can now grow it for profit.
As for the protesters;
The next time they chain/handcuff themselves to a gate or something, I think the authorities should leave them there for a few days in winter and a week in the smmer – only unchaining them if their life is in danger. Problem solved. (That is if they can make it that far – car break down is priceless – they should be walking or using a bycycle as not to support the bad “oil” industry – then they may gaing a little respect.
Mom, the boy friends car broke down and we can’t make it home tonight!!!!
now how old is that line????
Doen’t even need the news paper for the comics, just go to Kate’s place:-))))
MSM 101. 2 momma’s boys and a goat is a protest worth front page coverage. 10,000 people building a oil sands plant is a disaster. Monsanto scientists developing glyphosate and plant genetics that reduce soil erosion and allow affordable food for a few billion people is a bigger disaster worthy of a protest. Sounds about right.
Why protest Monsanto? Their scientists deserve the Nobel Peace Prize for developing glyphosate.
The good things Monsanto does won’t justify the bad things they do. Each issue must be dealt with separately. Monsanto is not above reproach. Be informed, watch “Food Inc” for starters.
North of 60 >
Ditto.
It’s hard to understand why many people say there’s more than enough food to go around; when the crap we’re eating today is GMO, hormone enhanced, or synthetically produced to bolster the required volumes.
Capitalism is a good thing, but Monsanto is all the makings of a monopoly. Slowly but surly through the FDA they are squeezing out the little guy, now it’s after Mennonites selling raw milk, fresh vegetables, and little kids selling lemonade on a street corner.
One Monsanto seed blows into your fields and produces their trademark grain/ corn and you could lose the farm.
It won’t be long until it’ll be illegal to grow your own non government approved gardens or collect rainwater. It’s already happening through various regulations in different parts of the US.
Not a good set of politics to get behind.
That said, these idiots don’t know what their protesting, it could be a golf ball factory for all they care. I think we are all sick of “protesters” by now, which is unfortunate because it’s desensitizing our rights if and when we need them, and distracting from issues we may want to pay closer attention too.
The best thing to do with the protestors is ignore them. When they don’t get the attention they crave, they’ll go away.

Food Inc is a vary biased movie. Monsanto does not force growers to use their genetics, there are non herbicide tolerant varieties avaiable on the market that producers can choose to grow. Monsanto does require producers who purchase their seed to sign a technology use agreement and in this agreement it states that producers may not plant the seed they grow, it is a up front contract and if producers choose to violate the terms of this contract Monsanto does prosecute which they legally have every right to do.
Yes, you are confused.
Maybe we should run with Frank J’s idea @ IMAO and have a ‘Punch a Hippie Day’. It could coincide with any occupy day, thus saving on advertising costs, porta hut rentals, etc.
Of course the movie ‘Food Inc’ is biased against the unhealthy and destructive practices of industrial agriculture. Some people will understand what it’s about, and those who don’t are inconsequential. I couldn’t care less if stupid people want to cram slow poison in their mouths, and grow superbugs with their unhealthy agricultural methods. That’s their problem not mine.
Sorry to some of you, but confused is right @ 7:13 and so is m @ 6:35. No one forced me to buy Roundup resistant seed, I could and still can buy non GM seed.
Some of Monsanto’s business practices may be open to question, but then are those of the left’s darling GE. A less than stellar business model should be a whole different topic.
The left hates Monsanto just like it hates the oil sands because somehow these represent the face of capitalism. General Electric is a useful idiot for the left just like Armand Hammer was for Stalin.
Anyone who hates a company is a misdirected, misinformed fool, who can’t be bothered to research the issues and make an informed decision about specific practices.
North of 60 may I inquire how farm removed from the farmgate you are. There is a great deal of wrong information about intensive agriculture that people quote verbatum. You stated your distaste for hormonal implants but did you know the levels of estrogen in a steak from an organic grass fed heifer are significantly higher then those levels in an implanted feedlot steer? That being said intensive agriculture is not perfect, but millions of people are working everyday to make it better.
Stop misquoting people.
I have no intention of trying to teach pigs to sing.
Those who misquote and try to ‘put words in someones mouth’ will be ignored.
Oh, the circus….
I grew up working on traditional mixed farms where growing healthy food and humane treatment of livestock was the most important thing we did. Many of today’s industrial agricultural practices are motivated primarily by profit. I simply refuse to eat their products and don’t care if they endanger people’s health or destroy their environment. We all can vote with our wallets.
north of 60: Grow a lot of crops do you.
confused @ 7:13 and Ken (Kulak) @ 8:08 are spot on with their comments.
Well said.
It’s fortunate for farmers that some people choose their their food on emotion. There’s a quick fortune to be made from those wanting to vote with their wallets.
As for “One Monsanto seed blows into your fields and produces their trademark grain/ corn and you could lose the farm” it would be great if this were so. I believe Monsanto donates its awards to charities and community projects.
I know where my food comes from. Do you?
Do some research, make informed decisions.
Ignore those who make personal attacks, since they seldom understand the issues so they lash out and address people personally on a public form. It’s called grandstanding, and it has no place in adult discussions.
WalterF >
“…it would be great if this were so. I believe Monsanto donates its awards to charities and community projects.”
Ha ha, a little socialism in action. Take from the working and give to the needy.
Don’t get me wrong, I was just pointing out another side to the issue. I could care less what other people put in their bodies, smoke, drink, heroin, or rat poison. It’s yours to abuse as you wish.
I choose to eat what I hunt, fish or grow myself. I buy organic when I can, and only drink bottled water or fresh juice, black coffee is my vice. But that’s just me; I’m no enviro weenie, or supporting the “protesters” simply raising a point.
Glyphosate was invented for use as water softener salt. They found out that it killed everything green.
North of 60.
Whats “Industrial Ag Practice” mean anyway? Is it a 2500 acre farm? 5k? 10k? 20k? 50k what? Of course many of today’s farming practices are motivated by profit. What’s wrong with that? Have you checked out what land, machinery, chem, fert, fuel, taxes etc, etc, etc, You take the risk, the return should be great. There are many many moving parts farming/Ag today regardless of total acres. That’s that. please feel free to purchase whatever type of food you wish too, any time you wish to. However, spare me the “endangering people health” gibberish.
