  1. Good! Now hang the f***ers!
They were found guilty of three counts of first degree murder.
Even in civilized Canada that MUST mean three CONSECUTIVE life sentences, culture notwithstanding.

  2. I hope the appeal is denied. Every time they get another crack at a jury, they stand a good chance of getting a sympathetic muslim, who wouldn’t vote guilty under any circumstances.

  3. This is a good verdict, and ought to be widely publicized. No parole for 25 years! Yeah!

In Canada, consecutive penalties only transpire from separate crimes/incidents. In the view of Canadian jurisprudence, this was 1 crime/incident.
IOW this is not like 4 armed robberies…the penalties of such robberies would be served consecutively.

Hung juries are in principle, mistrials….a new trial process then begins, unless the Crown elects to abandon the process. Usually the judge will ORDER a new trial in the instance of a hung jury.
    The system works.
The problem with OJ’s trial is the implacable juror managed to effect a “not guilty” verdict. If the jury had reported not able to reach a verdict….mistrial.
This means that the maximum penalty for a crime is the penalty for the most serious crime. IOW the penalty for murder obscures such crimes as having an illegal weapon. However if the murder conviction for murder is set aside on appeal, the penalties for the lessor offences take force.
However take heart, these individuals are in for life….only if ALL 4 convictions are set aside on appeal…then lessor convictions such as conspiracy take hold, or perjury…..
I suspect that these convictions are for practical purposes are de facto unappealable.

  5. The only thing that disappoints me is when reporters say “no chance of parole for 25 years”. These 3 murderers should NEVER get out. The Harper gov’t has repealed the ‘faint hope’ clause and while I applaud them for having done so — even though this family, having been convicted of multiple murders, wouldn’t have been eligible anyways — it’s time for the gov’t to end parole eligibility PERIOD for those convicted of first degree. I don’t think that holding such a position is draconian. If you’re convicted of first degree, you should never get out. Hopefully, the Harper gov’t at some point down the line moves to end parole eligibility… just think how much more satisfying it would’ve been if reporters said “no chance of parole”.

  6. Now if we could just get the Arar family out of Canada, and claw back the ‘pain and suffering’ money they received.
Thing are looking good for justice in Canada. With no apologist, left-leaning opposition it will be amazing what we can do for society in Canada now.
Here’s looking at a Harper Dynasty!

  7. Pool Results: Opinions given in previous posting.
Scar : Given convictions on first degree, 25 year minimum life sentence. Women are rarely found guilty of first degree but this chicky is a special case.
The Champ: Probably 25 for the dad, maybe 10 tops for the lunatic mom and 10 for the nice young man.
Or “.. wouldn’t be surprised if the jury still has “reasonable doubt” about this case”
Spike: i bet they walk ….
Peterj: Even if they all get life in prison (not) My guess is father gets first, son second and mother gets off.
Canuckguy: At least the father will be found guilty of 1st degree murder. The other two 2nd degree.
But I am hoping the jury has the smarts and guts to declare all three guilty of 1st degree murder.
    Jury Verdict:
Three members of a Montreal family have all been found guilty of first-degree murder in the drowning deaths of four other family members
Well, I guess I come the closest to winning, if my ‘hope’ can count.
Kudos to the jury. Now it’s up to the judge to follow the rule of law.

  8. I’m not a fan of capital punishment so I would suggest that the killers get sentenced to life without parole and a daily diet of nothing but pork products. Pigs brains, eyes, intestines, liver, heart, lung all stewed in pig’s blood would be a start.

  9. and…the cbc’s Andrew just wondered aloud if this was ‘uncomfortable’ and targets a certain religion! GOOD GOD!

  10. Echoing Mark:
Excellent! Excellent! Excellent! (I was worried).
SO, Canadian multiculturalism does have outer boundaries then, eh?
They’re way, way out there (where there be monsters!) but they’re there.
I’m fine with the 25 years. 25 years in an infidel prison will irreparably ruin their lives.
Let’s call this a Honour Verdict, honouring our culture amd mores.

  11. I’m happy with that verdict but miss the good ‘ol days where they would have been strung up.

  12. The CBC had some Queen’s University student on, son of a justice of the peace and from a very liberal Afghan family, stating his disappointment at the Crown for claiming Canadian values being affirmed. Seems the young Afghan muslim wanted to claim that the values are “universal” and the Ceeb let him run with it for an extended period of time.
Because that’s the important takeaway from this trial: what will people think of Afghans and muslims.

  13. DONE, DONE, AND DONE!!!
Let that be a lesson to all you 7th century throw backs about how canada works!!!

  14. Just saw the SUN’s Joe Warmington doing an interview with a young person, a student of Afghan decent, criticizing the crown whom he said showed discrimination against the Afghan community by using the term “Canadian values”…. the student feeling that the lawyer for the crown dooesn’t believe Afaghans are real Canadians. Warmington smacked down the young guy somewhat by stating that the crown attorney made no such claim.
The student then goes on to politicizing the case by bringing in the upcoming budget — yes, the budget, which has nothing to do WHATSOEVER with today’s verdict — by saying that he hopes programs that help Afghans integrate into Canadian society don’t get cut by the “Harper” gov’t in spending cuts that are coming.

  15. Joe @ 3:13pm
The 3 convicted murderers, had they been fed a diet strictly of pork products would, of course, die from starvation…. or would they? I bet they’d not only dig into a plate of pork ribs but would lick their fingers clean afterwards. These 3 are about anything but honor

  16. “programs that help Afghans integrate into Canadian society don’t get cut by the “Harper”
    We’ve got programs ?
The only one I would support are Expedited deportations and shutting down immigration offices on the other side.

  17. Good to see they got our hardest penalty for their heinous crimes. At times like this I wish we had the death penalty.
On our immigration interviews they must ask future Muslim immigrants their position on honor killings.

  18. The verdict is as just as it can be in Canada and does indeed reflect Canadian values however I think that some of us worried that justice might not have been served illustrates how fragile the system is,we must be vigilent in maintaining our values.

  19. With sentences of only 25 years, the son and likely mother as well will both live long enough to get OUT of prison! I wish we still had the death penalty in Canada. Hope they house them in the general population, where the inmates will apply a more appropriate ‘sentence’ than 25 years.

  20. This is a poignant example of the inherent racism in Canada.
Here we are well into the 21’st century and Canada clings to outmoded concepts of Cultural Superiority
    All cultures are equal.
No culture has the right to dictate THEIR values to another EQUALLY valid culture.
    So sayeth the liberal intelligentsia.

  21. The muslim spin doctors and their left wingnut cbc sycophants will soon be cooking up and serving the old stew of ..islam does not condone what white racist Canadians call honour killings. Sun TV may ask “what per cent of these clearly non-islamic honour killings are perpetrated by muslims?” But you can bet your donkey (or girlfriend if you are islamic) that the cbc will not ask such a germane question because they know they will not like the answer. Worldwide, about 90% I am guessing which takes it out of the coincidence category in my books.

  22. Message to S. Harper:
The next election will guarantee you another (larger) majority.
Therefore, bring back the death penalty. Campaign on it. You will win.
Lets nip this cultural contamination in the bud.
God-fearing, peace loving, hardworking, tolerant and respectable Canadians have had it with these 7th century barbarians bringing their crap here. And also their apologists already here (hello CBC/Liberals/other asorted pinko wack-jobs)
    This. Ends. Now.
Do it Steve, we know you love Canada as much as we do. You know we will help you protect this great country. Now you must help us.
We need to put these bastards away for a long long time…
And we need to hang the next ones!

  23. Just imagine an appeal on religious grounds. It would tear this foolish country apart.
Never should have given up the death penalty.

  24. I wonder if the staff is now scouring the prison system for the meanest and toughest bull dyke they can find to be a roomie for the lady that killed her 3 kids.

  25. Yep, I am pleasantly surprised by the verdict. I still don’t have faith in our justice system, and I suspect the verdict and sentence was due to the high profile nature of the case. However, good job police, crown and jury.

  26. It is not just Muslims who have this perverted idea of “Family Honour”. The concept also applies to Sikhs and Hindus

  27. “… the student feeling that the lawyer for the crown dooesn’t believe Afaghans are real Canadians”
    How predictable.
But of course, like all liberals, this clown reads the verdict entirely backwards: the real truth is that by finding all of these fiends guilty, the jury holds them up to the same legal standard as all canucks, including those born here. It’d only be racist if this human debris received special consideration for “cultural and ethnic considerations”.
How less racist and more inclusive could the jury be?

  28. It’s good these murderers got what they deserved.
But, I’m not sure the ‘Honour killing’ tag is any more horrendous for the several dozen such that have happened in North American, than the ‘medical procedure’ tag use for the murder of 33,000,000 babies in the womb since Roe V. Wade.

  29. mhb@4:33:

    “… human debris”?

How can you speak of your fellow citizens, your brothers and sister in the great Canadian mosaic this way?
    Observer@4:37:

    “…got what they deserved”?

I don’t think you mean that.
How long before the muzzies start demanding juries of their peers? Look what it did for OJ.

  30. Judge says:
“It is difficult to conceive of a more despicable, more heinous crime…the apparent reason behind these cold-blooded, shameful murders was that the four completely innocent victims offended your completely twisted concept of honour … that has absolutely no place in any civilized society.”
Thank you for that statement on behalf of civilization.

  31. Canuckguy, it appears to me that it was the kid that actually pushed the vehicle into the lock. How they were lured there, or previously incapacitated, is unknown, but it couldn’t have been without accomplices – mum & dad.

  32. When they say they are innocent, they are. In Islam they are innocent. Many MUSLIM-canadians will only now look at this case as a tragedy and travesty. The only way Muslims can stop doing this is to stop being Muslims. Is that likely?

  33. Just curious. I see in the article, the defense attorney is “disappointed” in the verdict and plans appeals. Does anyone know the Ontario court-allowed hourly billing rate for attorneys representing clients unable to pay for their own defense?

  34. Robert@ 4:50:
The judge’s remarks are entirely facile. Suppose, for the sake of argument, that these acts were taken on the basis of the deepest religious commitments. Are we not supposed to respect these commitments? Isn’t that the Canadian way? If so, the judge would be entirely out of order calling their commitments “completely twisted”. That would be nothing but an expression of his, rather different, deepest commitments, and it would be disrespectful to hold others, with their “equally respectable” commitments, to his standards.
How can we expect immigrants to give up their most fundamental beliefs, especially when they immigrate to a country that proclaims itself multi-cultural—equally respectful of all cultures and religions? We cannot. No one is entitled to be shocked or horrified the next time this happens. We have invited it.
I am not saying that we therefore have to accept it. We have other options. Say goodbye to multiculturalism. Close the damn borders!

  35. I don’t know what lawyers are paid but I suspect if the government is paying for it, every lawyer in the office is reading the million? pages of evidence every waking moment of every day plus some.
St. Peter said to the newcomer “We don’t see many people 150 years old.”
The newcomer, a lawyer, replied “I am not 150 years old, I’m only 80”
St. Peter then said “I’m sorry, I was going from your timesheets.”

  36. When the Crown Prosecutor Gerard Laarhuis was making a statement outside the Court, “Moosa Hadi, the private investigator hired by the Shafia family to find “the truth”, was taken off the property by police after shouting at the prosecutor that the decision was an “injustice.” – from the CBC report.
It creeped me out to hear Hadi interrupt Laarhuis. He is wandering the streets. Check out the number of people at the CBC poll that disagreed with the judgment. This story may have more victims.

  37. Some of the comments on the Huffington Post are priceless … and yet so predictable:
“This is horrible. When are people going to give up religion? If there was a god, how could he/she condone this behavior. Before any of you say this is just Muslims. Please read your christian bible. It calls for things like this. Live and let live people. The whole world would be a better, happier and more peaceful place.”
“i imagine looking at the lives of many sociopath republicans would give you insight into their thinking”
“I am sure many westerners have committed vicious crimes. Just Google it.”
“Oh no! Who is going to give the key note speech at the Republican convention ?”
“Oh yes, our “Christian” country just killed thousands and thousands of Iraqi and Afghani civilians, about with a good portion of those deaths were based on a lie. A man who claims to be christian sent these innocent people to their deaths.”

  38. lets see if they believe in Sharia law and do each other in now.
have you ever seen a more convoluted set of lies?

  39. “25 years in an infidel prison will irreparably ruin their lives”-MND.
Allah almighty,I never thought of that! Now,they’ll have to build a special section of the prison complete with prayer room and add a halal cook to the staff.
Be easier if they were shot trying to escape.

  40. To Robert W.: Our “Christian” country permits the murder of millions of babies in the womb.
While “abortion” is not totally forbidden by Islam, it is not common. Which is one of the reasons Islam is a rising culture. They don’t kill their babies(or don’t have them) like the West does.
Who are we to judge their values when ours are so shoddy?
And, since “sex-selective” abortions are a tourist trade in Canada, that means future women are the majority of the victims.
Cast ye not the firss stone……………
