Canadian songwriter Stan Rogers was a 6’4″ giant of a man whose works were often inspired by Canada’s rich history. Rogers died 29 years ago, at the age of 33, in a fire on an Air Canada passenger jet, but he left behind a legacy of some great music, including tonight’s selection, an inspirational maritime tale about hard work, courage, dreams, optimism, and faith called Mary Ellen Carter. Long-ish but well worth reading: Baseball Crank’s What The Republican “Establishment” Really Means.
A rather timely Winston Churchill quote:
Ron Paul:
Here’s a good piece responding to the crazy-uncle-in-the-attic’s theory of blowback and his absurd golden rule of foreign policy:
“Only three years after the United States won its independence, when there was no Jewish state for Muslims to resent, and no American troops on Muslim soil, Thomas Jefferson, then U.S. ambassador to France, and John Adams, then U.S. Ambassador to Britain, learned from a Muslim ambassador to Britain why the Muslims were so hostile towards Americans. Jefferson and Adams were attempting to negotiate a peace treaty with the Muslim “Barbary pirates,” an exercise that ultimately proved to be futile.
“As Jefferson and Adams later reported to Congress, the Muslim ambassador explained to them that ‘Islam was founded on the Laws of their Prophet, that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as Prisoners, and that every Musselman [Muslim] who should be slain in Battle was sure to go to Paradise.’”
EBD: Hung out a briefly with Stan Rogers (and his bro) at a little folk club in Fredericton, NB sometime in the 1970s. Fine man, great musician. I was an aspiring singer/songwriter at the time.
Has Obama ever taken responsibility for anything.
This is rich. The blame game again. Sorry Zero this is your bed to lie in.
Obama Rejecting Pipeline, Pokes Back At GOP
In a decision that quickly re-ignited a fierce energy debate, the Obama administration on Wednesday rejected the controversial Keystone XL pipeline because the 60-day deadline imposed by Republicans did not allow adequate time to review an alternate route through an ecologically sensitive area in Nebraska.

Me No Dhimmi, perhaps Ron Paul wants America to pull back into its shell because he’s a bit of a shrinking violet himself.
Not fair, I know, but still, does that look like a guy who should be the president of the United States?
I mean, if you get rolled by Bruno…
Stan Rogers, a Canadian legend right up there with Gordon Lightfoot. My favorite of song of Stan’s is Northwest Passage
http://youtu.be/TVY8LoM47xI
I play the Mary Ellen Carter and NW passage all the time in my truck
His brother Garnet is good in his own right and I have seen him several times.
thank EBD
Great song, magnificent voice. God bless Stan Rogers,1949-1983: what a loss.

Amusing read, funny how fast the victim can become the victimizer. It also has its own label, so the white members of the oppressing group are stuck with it now…

“homonationalism is basically what it sounds like…GLTBQ organizations and individuals who perpetuate any ideas of white superiority specifically within the gay community. Nationalism with rainbows…”

Ron Paul reacted to Bruno’s overtures like any normal man would. Had he not got out of there so fast, he would have decked the faker:)
Love Stan Roger’s music…Thanks, EBD.
Dirty Hydro
The greenies are relentless. Now they’re after hydro power for emitting more greenhouse gases than previously thought. Look out Quebec – now they’re coming after you.

I read the item “Dirty Hydro.” It made me think …
Maybe it is just me. Lately it seems that comments in “comments” sections of blogs and media sites are way more supportive of conventional energy than in years previous. Have members of the “right” simply become sick and tired of having green rubbish stuffed down our throats by “watermelons?”
It seems that maybe 80% of comments support sensible development are are not buying the absurd green wishes and ideologies. So it seems.
We can only hope.
Met a wonderful couple visiting from the U.S. this evening. The fellow, a lieutenant, just finished a one year tour in Afghanistan. A smart and very curious guy. The way he spoke & acted totally tore to shreds the Left’s ongoing assertion that everyone in the military is a big dummy who couldn’t find anything better in life.
Stan Rogers was one of the greatest voices in the history of maritime music – a guy who breathed new meaning into the word “troubador”. I’d like to be able to sing “The Mary Ellen Carter”, but the message always leaves me with a catch in my throat.
And frankly, thinking about “gas flares” in the context of yesterday’s unimaginably self-destructive decision by Obama on Keystone XL, the song “The Idiot” comes to mind – and its message, too, about how you sometimes have to suck it up and work, because “the government dole will rot your soul.”
Newt called Oblamer stupid,
now they plan to get/stop him..

“Premiers won’t scare Harper”
“When Prime Minister Stephen Harper sucker-punched the provinces with new federal limits on health-care spending, everyone waited to see how the premiers would respond to the big bully in Ottawa.
On Tuesday, political fight fans got their answer: The premiers are forming not one, but two – count ‘em, two – committees to study the issue.
Ooh, that ought to leave Harper shaking in his patent-leather loafers, right?
Wrong. I doubt Harper’s Conservatives are losing much sleep after watching the timid performance by Canada’s provincial leaders during two days of alleged brain-storming in Victoria.”

EBD, thanks for the Stan Rogers. His stature just continues to grow. An incredible talent felled too young helping passengers off the smoke-filled plane in Cincinatti.
MND, I knew Stan back in the day, an enthusiastic “puppy,” in a lumberjack body! When he started writing and performing his own material, he found his metier. You can’t beat his Maritime roots; though he grew up in Hamilton, his heart was in the Cape Breton highlands.
I love Northwest Passage and have a soft spot for Forty-five Years:

Victor Davis Hanson on the descent of civilizations:
“. . . In 1960, there were far fewer government officials, far fewer prisons, far fewer laws, and far fewer lawyers — and yet the state [California] was a far safer place than it is a half-century later. …
“The average Californian, like the average Greek, forgot that civilization is fragile. Its continuance requires respect for the law, tough-minded education, collective thrift, private investment, individual self-reliance, and common codes of behavior and civility — and exempts no one from those rules. Such knowledge and patterns of civilized behavior, slowly accrued over centuries, can be lost in a single generation. . . .

If you ever wonder about the staggering cost of our justice system or should that be industry just look at the time involved with this case, which seems so typical as years go by to come to trial.
The tragic killing of Police Sergeant Ryan Russell took place in January of 2011 and is expected to come to trial on January 7th, 2013, some 2 years later. The estimated length of this trial with be three months!
This crime took place in minutes with the accused stealing a snowplow then striking the officer and fatally wounding him. The amount of evidence seems substantial against Richard Kachkar, video, many witnesses, yet why would it take some 60 trial days to reach a verdict?
Several years ago a senior Judge stated that under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms murder trials that used to take a week now take months and she seems to be proved right. Is it any wonder citizens will do anything to not serve on juries when advised that several months may be involved.
A sample quote from the ‘Dogwood’ kit, ” Hi Sis, hope your field season up in Alaska went well! Hopefully you didn’t
get charged by any grizzlies or eaten alive by mosquitos! Though we all
know a grizzly is no match for a farm girl from Saskatchewan.”
Dogwood has a kit that can be downloaded by entusiastic supporters who care about the world.Dogwood is one of the main organizations behind the Gateway roadblock.It can be seen here;

Problem: Detroit’s criminals break into cars.
Solution: Steal cars.
“establishments along Park Avenue have already witnessed large amounts of cars being towed, even though no signage has been installed to inform drivers that street parking is not allowed.”

One last item on the Dogwood group. I just received this e-mail;
All right. Here we go. Like we were saying this isn’t going to be easy, but it will be fun and it’ll work. You should now have the “Find Allies” No Tankers kit on your computer or in your hands if you’ve printed it out. Grab a coffee or tea or something and give it a read. I’m here if you need help. Eric is the fellow who was saying that he would accept money from aliens to stop the pipeline. I wonder if he accepts collect calls.
Stan Rogers – afterthought, wherein I brilliantly tie this in with the earlier thread on the Italian Titanic.
If memory serves, Stan may have died trying to help others escape the smoke in the aircraft.
The Dave Rutherford Show just finished for the day here in Alberta, and Dave gave a little info on tomorrows show.
He mentioned that a government close to you(Albertan’s) is also interested in retaining the names of those on the gun registry like the Quebec government wants to. I assume he is speaking of the Alberta government.
I will of course be tuning into tomorrows show, but has anyone heard about this? I did a quick search and came up with nothing.
Ok. I just found this. I do not know french so I can not read their link clearly.
Great commentary on the Keystone pipeline including this gem:
“In purely political terms, it’s hard to imagine Obama’s play for green voters driving malfunctioning Volts outnumbering those blue-collar voters all across the distressed battleground Midwest. Can you say Teamsters?”

MND, earlier in this thread, batb, who said she KNEW Stan Rogers, mentioned his altruism in the Cincinnati plane fire that led to his too early, heroic death. Yes, what a contrast to the moral pygmy of an Italian “captain”.
Stan Rogers was a great artist and Canadian: his loss in enormous. God bless him: he was a REAL man, a very rare breed these sad days!
“Fogarty’s Cove” is a favourite of mine. It’ll bring a smile to one’s face and set the feet a’tapping!

US Banks refusing cash withdrawl requests?
http://barnhardt.biz/
Ah, lookout, thanks. I had read batb’s comment but missed her mention of his altruism — and it was italicized!. 5 marks off on the reading comprehension, eh?
BTW, lookout, at that same little folk club I spent an hour or two with the Chieftains after the close. The most down-to-earth gentlemen you could ever meet despite their being “the Beatles of Celtic music” as the owner put it! Paddy Maloney on the tin flute sitting next to me. However, I’m in awe in retrospect only as I really didn’t know about them at that point. LOL.
In reference to the fine man who Stan Rogers was, I was thinking of this beautiful motet by Charles Villiers Stanford (sung here by St. John’s College, Cambridge). And just now, I learned of the untimely death of another fine young Canadian, the free style skier, Sarah Burke, 29. May they rest in peace.
“Justorum animae in manu Dei sunt,
Et non tanget illos tormentum malitiae.
Visi sunt oculis insipientium mori,
Illi autem sunt in pace.”
Translation: “The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God;
there shall no torment or malice touch them.
In the sight of the unwise they seem to die,
but they are in peace.”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_7MEjRuKiE (There’s also another fine Stanford piece by Gerald Finzi here.)
P.S. MND, don’t worry: we’re not allowed to take marks off for anything these days!!
lookout, MND, ‘a fine conversation going here!
If you’re ever in Toronto, MND, sometime in the fall I think it is, there’s a Stan Rogers’ Tribute at Hugh’s Room, always a great evening. His wife, now married to another musician, and his children, who were very young when he died, participate in the ceilidh-merriment.
If you make it, mention it and I’ll see you there. Maybe, lookout, you’d go too! Here’s the link to the Tribute last year, November 19, 2011:

Brainstorming Premiers? If Christy! was there, she was faking it.
Yeah, but she’s just cute as a stunned bunny with her big ‘see I’m not married’ ring. Cute MILF candidate though.
Thanks batb! I’m putting a memo in my Outlook task manager for the fall of 2012. This would be worth a trip to TO (in which I haven’t set foot for around 20+ years).
lookout/batb (my favourite sda Christians): I’m 500 pages into the Old Testament. Rough going. I’m told the NT is a lot better!
MND, that would be a hoot!!
I can’t imagine reading the Bible cover to cover. The OT’s heavy going — it’s supposed to be! — but everyone’s right about the NT: The Greatest Story Ever Told. 😉
If you come to TO for the Stan Rogers Tribute, you can come to church with me too!!!!! 😉
MND, among other OT books, Proverbs, the Prophets, and the Psalms are beautiful, powerful, and challenging too! Good for you: I’m really impressed.
I’ll check out Hugh’s Room too for that Stan Rogers show. Maybe I can manage to be there, and I could go to church with batb too: wouldn’t that be a hoot?!
So many treasured memories involving Stan Rogers:
Bellowing Barrett’s Privateers at two in the morning at a pizza joint in Kingston, and in countless George St. pubs
A group of us singing Northwest Passage on a hot summer evening in Washington State, and occasionally still to my small children, accompanied by giggles and guffaws.
So many great songs capturing the spirit of the ’70s, The Idiot, Free In The Harbour, when NFLD and Alberta were first linked by a generation of hard working men and opportunity.
I’m not an easterner, nor do I have any family ties to the region, but Stan Rogers in my mind ranks amongst the very few special artists, Gordon Lightfoot and Ian Tyson included, who could sincerely enunciate a genuine pan-Canadian spirit.
It’s a tragedy he left us so soon.
Amen to that, Archie.
