  1. Dammit we’ll kill off our children fighting for oil but you better not give it to us. Besides everyone knows that oil tankers never pollute. It’s those nasty pipelines that are the problem. What an idiot. If the North America became self-sufficient, the middle eastern idiots could kill each other off and leave the rest of us alone.

  6. Enough of this posturing,The U.S. should continue to run the Stennis Battle Group through the Strait of Hormuz,and be prepared to annihilate the Iranian military if they so much as give ’em a dirty look.
    Or,we can face the price of oil going up and down like a yo-yo while Ahmadinejad plays the U.S government like a cheap fiddle.
    As we learned in the 1930’s, sometimes you have to stop negotiating.
    I wonder if Putin is behind the whole thing, as part of a plan to stretch U.S. resources to the breaking point,in a bid to regain Russia’s place in the world.

According to what I could find on the interweb, the cost of a barrel of oil, adjusted for inflation, was in the range of $28 in 2002, $57.50 in 2005, $69 in 2007, $56 in 2009 and about $101.00 today. It could reasonably be argued that the price of oil, to a significant extent, is kept artificially high by instability in the Middle East. What would happen to the price of oil if Canada supplied a secure and plentifully ongoing source of oil to the US? Keep in mind also that if the world economy slows down demand for oil will likely trend down. Would oil at $45 a barrel be good for Alberta and Saskatchewan?

    Canada already does, and it has absolutely no effect on the ‘price of oil’ which is determined by market speculators who use any excuse to jack up the price. The price you pay at the pumps has nothing to do with the actual price the refineries pay for the Canadian oil they use. Oil companies use the ‘world oil price’ to rip you off and pocket enormous profits. They’ve got the consumer over a barrel and will charge as much as they can because they know that most people have no options.

  15. I was under the impression that if the price of oil goes down then consumption increases so profit-wise one balances out the other. Also, from what I have read, OPEC is great at stabilizing the floor price of oil but is less effective at controlling the peak prices (except for an embargo of course).
    Oil prices are definitely influenced by production costs – R&D, extraction, refining, labor, regulations, etc- but the developing world’s increased standard of living has also been a significant factor. This increased energy accessibility has been a net positive for human development, right behind democracy and free markets.
    The media can trumpet the supremacy of a knowledge economy or green economy all they want but affordable, reliable energy is the foundation of a healthy, vibrant economy. This is why carbon pricing and drilling/pipeline bans are so absurd – they force real economic costs based on theoretical damage.

  17. Anybody see the parallel between Jimmy Carter and Iran to Barak Obama and Iran. In both cases a weak ineffective president being pushed around by Iran. The only difference is this time I do not see a Regan on the horizon for the US.

  18. Why not Canadian oil?
    Because the Middle East is a huge money sinkhole, where it’s sent and where it disappears.
    It’s not as much about acquiring ME oil for the US but keeping other people’s hands off of it.
    When ME oil is depleted or less cost effective to produce, Canadian and Alaskan oil will be king.

    In a word, yes. AB and SK and all freedom loving regions should welcome low and lower oil prices – every dollar less in value takes weapons and power out of the hands onour enemy and makes our economies I general wealthier. 15/bbl oil would bankrupt them…

  23. It’s the Saudi’s who have had the most control on world oil prices, not the Iranians. Lower oil prices in the past have clearly favoured middle east oil. Getting oil from Alberta is an expensive venture and the rise in world oil prices, as someone has already pointed out, has favoured Canadian oil.
    Having said all that, it is still politically ridiculous to shutdown XL. XL is one more source of supply that weakens OPEC’s influence. Though, don’t discount the influence of technology on long term decision making. The U.S., according to Goldman Sachs could be poised to pass both Saudi Arabia and Russia to become the world’s largest oil producer.

    The price US refineries pay for Canadian and Mexican oil is well below the ‘world oil price’. It’s based on long terms contracts with prices set by agreements under NAFTA.
    The ‘world oil price’ is used by oil companies to set the price you pay at the pumps.

  26. Adam Beach got canned from Law and Order SVU and now has a CBC show, Arctic Air, obviously designed for a Canadian actor with limited talent that can’t find work in the US.

  27. I don’t agree with Adam Beach’s political or pipeline views, however that’s an entirely different issue than his acting creds. Calling Adam a “loser cbc ‘actor'” because they don’t agree with his beliefs, has no credibility when that actor’s skills have been recognized by the industry on numerous occasions. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0063440/awards
    Actors should stick to what they do best, i.e. acting, and leave the pipeline debate to people with credible knowledge about that subject.

  28. How have Beach’s credentials been recognized? By working bit parts on endless shows. Maybe he can become the male Jayne Eastwood and have a part in every CBC show ever made despite an altogether obvious lack of talent.

    Obviously the industry has more credibility than some anonymous poster on some internet forum.

  30. The ‘film industry’ has NO credibility with me regarding what they deem worthy in either films or acting. They use their industry as a propaganda tool against their own country!-and against her people. So much for “film industry credibility”
    Any actor who submits himself or herself to the propaganda of an issue and use their ‘celebrity’ to influence the public toward their ’cause’ is not behaving in an unbiased manner. Mr. Beach has every right to his own opinion but he does not have the right to use what may or may not be ‘celebrity status’ to thwart what a country wants and needs desperately for all her people and submit to efforts to stymie what would be enormous advantages and job creation for thousands. HIS job appears not to be in any danger but he will happily stand in the way of opportunities for others.

  33. @eyeswideshut…when I lived in Edmonton in the mid to late 90s, I remember Premier Klein, saying on the budget that they were being very conservative with the price of oil and pegging it at $25/barrel…based on this price his government was able to run the provice, its services and still give a whackload of money to the ROC to mollify Quebec…so I think $45/barrel may be okay.

    Yes he won an award for native actors – like who else was there. He won a Rising Star award 15 years after he started acting. He LOST the rest.
    His accomplishments have been in native roles. His deadpan monotone delivery isn’t conducive with flexibility in rolls but is conducive with the click of changing channels. Nobody watches CBC drama so it really doesn’t matter.

  36. The better the actor the bigger the liar. Playing dress up all tier lives, pretending to be other people for scads of money. This does not sound like they are fountains of wisdom.
    Indeed for but a few , why should we listen to perennial low educated, drug rattled, pampered folks who’s greatest skill is deception?

  37. With lift costs @ around something like $21 / bbl. I would hardly think a $15 barrel of oil would be a welcome sight Gord. Might wanna reconsider that silliness.
