  1. $30 million for that POS?!! Seems to be a case of in vino veritas to me.
What I’d like to know is how they came up with the $10,000 in damages figure? One could argue that just about anything one did to this “artwork” would improve its quality. Personally, I’d prefer to improve it with a couple of 30 round mags of 7.62×39 from 50′. I’d only charge $5 million and the cost of ammunition for my artistic additions.

  2. I like Kate’s work. At least you know the reason she painted it from its emotional impact of a an everyday event. Sure theres a place for abstract art like a Picasso or others . They too express a message. This painting reminds me of the two stripes, 2 million dollar public art . Edmonton payed for at city hall that looks like a chimp took a paint roller too. This is as close to symbolic art that means anything I care about.

  3. Many of these so called million dollar paintings were paint shopped,
put a canvas on the floor,
piss on it and call it grant art.
Or take someone else work and make a mockery copy of it.
Guess I should not complain too much,
many of my own blog writings include a lot of ‘copy and paste.’.’
I just don’t get the grant money I deserve.

  4. Oh no, not the Random Blotches of Black and Yellow — human civilization has been dealt a severe blow. Sorry, make that monkey civilization.

  5. If nothing else, it’s more interesting than Voice of Fire.
Some of the comments on the original thread are very funny.

  6. When looking at this painting I think that a 2 year olds depiction of their family in crayon would hold more depth and meaning. For this pile of !@#$%^& to be valued at 30mil is an indictment on the people and processes that allowed this supposed valuation to exist. Sure the woman broke the law but seriously in what universe does this “thing” = 30 million dollars?

  7. I Can’t Seem To Find A “Before” Picture
    Heh!
Some people say that abstract art is only good for toilet paper. This woman was one of em.

  8. OK, I’ll bite. Where exactly is the “damage”? And don’t say, “taxpayers’ wallets”.

  9. Well, it being the MSM, they actually used the wrong “painting” for the story graphic.
The actual painting was MUCH better! It even had a fancier name and everything!
Google “1957-J no.2” to see the 3 year old fridge art she did deface.

  10. If She had done that on a blank canvass, it would not have been vandalism, it would be art too, and hanging in the National Art Gallery after taxpayers had coughed up three or four million bucks.
    Correct technique, incorrect venue.

  11. “poice say she was drunk”
I say she was not properly remuneated for making an artistic improvement to the painting.

  12. The artist has renamed the painting ‘angry sphincter’ -it has been newly appraised at $40,000,000.

  13. Looks like it’s already been peed upon. My response to all those who state, “I can do that.” however, is “What’s stopping you?”

  14. The woman enhanced the “painting” by her selfexpression, giving certain fullness to the whole.
It acquired more of a character that was previously missing. Potential customer can take a whiff of the creation and decide that it is worth all that money and more. If you are a deep thinker, you may say that it is now a multimedia interactive “art”.
Today, the “painting” is valuable way beyond the $30 mil mark, the gallery will most certainly find a rich idiot that will pay a lot more than that, now that it was stamped by flesh.
However if they spend $10 K on “repair”, this would not be looked at with favour by rich idiots, it would certainly lose its current value.

  15. Scammers risk prison and “art purveyors” risk nothing, yet walk away with mega bucks. I remember the “work of art” for a Canadian Airport about twenty years ago. It may have been Mirabel.

It was a long vertical three colour painting. It cost 1.8 million dollars. A farmer had a replica painted on his barn for peanuts. Good for many laughs, maybe we should have cried though.

  16. ” a double dumb-a$$ on you” – Capt.Kirk
Seriously, the quality of the work is irrelevant. You free-marketeers should understand that the value of the painting is based on the market.
That said, the value of the painting should increase, as it’s likely now the first of a new genre of art: @$$stact art.

  17. Lets face it, if that painting actually sold for 30 million you know that Tax dollars were used!

Y’all should watch Who the #$&% Is Jackson Pollock?
Who the #$&% Is Jackson Pollock? is a documentary following a woman named Teri Horton, a 73-year-old former long-haul truck driver from California, who purchased a painting from a thrift shop for $5, only later to find out that it may be a Jackson Pollock painting; she had no clue at the time who Jackson Pollock was, hence the name of the film.”

  19. Why do artists need all these government grants/subsidies when they can make a cool $30,000,000 for one crappy painting?
Shit, I bet painting that cost less than a $20 lotto ticket… It’s like painting your own lotto tickets!!!

  20. Well, “art” IS in the opinion of the purchaser,so I guess if you’ve got the money, not money stolen from taxpayers, go ahead and buy it.
I thought Still’s painting was garbage, until I saw that link to the Jackson Pollock painting! Now THAT is garbage! Well, maybe they both are.
But then I’m still bitching over the 1.8 million the Mulroney government spent on “Voice of Fire”.
    Call me a philistine.

  21. I’d rather see a picture of the “weapon” used in the commission of the crime.
I wish I could sell a drop cloth, er… painting for $30 mill. H*ll, I’d let one go for $20 mill and claim a capital loss on taxes.

  22. I don’t think it should be called ‘art’ unless you can tell if it right-side-up or not. Can’t tell with this one and even the so-called artist wouldn’t be able to tell.

  23. dmorris, make it two in the philistine brigade. Voice of Fire was garbage, but then most abstract art is rubbish. Pretendng to “deeper meaning” in this stuff is usually what comes out of a crack pipe.
CRB, stop that right now. I nearly lost my coffee into the keyboard.

  24. I remember seeing my first large Matisse painting. They were beyond anything I could have imagined – totally sublime, mind-blowing masterful.
Before this experience (at the museum of modern art) I had seen reproductions of his work, to which I scoffed “what is this Sh*t!!!”. Painting suffer terribly from reproduction of any sort (unless they are very bad paintings)

  25. @ foobert
That horse truly is art and would take skill that not one person in a thousand could muster. The painting we are making fun of could be done by any 4 year old. Wonder what Calgary paid for the horse. Bet it was far less than 30M and there were no elitist snobs at the unveiling.

  26. foobert, thanks for the link. That is a piece of art. My wetware art quality detector immediately picks out the mechanical horse as something I’d like to see next time I’m in Calgary. The same quality detector lets me know that the $30 million butt-magnet painting is utter crap.
