Canada on Monday became the first country to announce it would withdraw from the Kyoto protocol on climate change, dealing a symbolic blow to the already troubled global treaty.
Environment Minister Peter Kent broke the news on his return from talks in Durban, where countries agreed to extend Kyoto for five years and hammer out a new deal forcing all big polluters for the first time to limit greenhouse gas emissions.
It’s about time that a Canadian government looked after Canadian interests.
Related: A CBC poll with a head start. We shall endeavor to remedy that.
From the comments, this excellent suggestion!
Wecome to the Motel Y2Kyoto Update: We can check out, but we can never leave!

I agree with you Simmy, they still have not asked for a refund of the millions of dollars sent to the Commonwealth nations, to pay for the relocation of the “island” nations because of increase of water level. How much has it gone up in the past 100 years …. 2cm?
I will believe it when the PM says publically that Climate Change/Global Warming is a fraud … it will NEVER happen, the PM is afraid of Dr. Fruit Fly and enviroMENTALists.
This was a good first step, yet he has to do more to convince me that he is serious. That will happen when the government stops paying thousands of dollars to cover this fraud.
Email’s sent. Way to lead Canada!
Today Kyoto. Tomorrow the CBC!!
They are discussing this over at Hot Air and Small Dead Animals gets a mention in the comments section.
Congratulations Canada,
good works..
I was fairly certain Japan announced 2 years ago that they would not be re-signing any new agreement once Kyoto ran out. Wouldn’t that make Japan the first country to officially withdraw after signing on?
Well, a good start. In some ways, it is a tiny baby step.
But, the real reason to celebrate this is that its a big slap in the face of the enviro-collectivists.
For years they have been crowded in their AC conference rooms, fasting on caviar and champagne, while fashionable soothsayers spouted the doom and gloom. Each sayer_of_sooth trying to outpaint the others in an effort to portray their hopes and dreams of worldwide calamity and apocalypse.
And then … what?
Someone withdrew?
How can they?
How could they?
Today is the moment in the story of “The Emperor Has No Clothes”; where the small child (thats Canada) speaks up and points out the obvious.
Turmel’s tariff idea is a non starter. Most if not all of the electricity Ontario sells to the US is dumped at below market and FIT contracted prices. Adding an export tax will only be added to the Global Adjustment that Ontario ratepayer currently pay to cover these losses.
It’s now 58% Yes; 41% No.
What is Canada going to do with all that Money that was been spent on the Kyoto process.. How many billions spent flying around the world looking for a bloke by the name “Consensus” will be now available for domestic stuff ?…
The Cluster fly Guy (fruit fly guru) will be left with his hands in his own pants.
This is great!
And I know CBC polls are irrelevant but it’s fun to mess with those lefties. I watched that poll last night go with ‘no’….and I was wondering where the SDA gang was…but checked in this a.m….SDS gets results!!
WRT re:naming Dion’s dog: didn’t he try to tell a corny dog joke and it ended with …”and the dog went BOOM!”…
So I’ll suggest BOOM! for the new dog name.
I’ll feel a lot better when Kent quits with his ‘We’ll do something about Climate Change” meme.
manversgwtw:
“Most if not all of the electricity Ontario sells to the US is dumped at below market and FIT contracted prices. Adding an export tax will only be added to the Global Adjustment that Ontario ratepayer currently pay to cover these losses”.
That is correct. Ont taxpayers susidize turbine operators 13.5c kwh for electricity which must be paid for whether needed or not; this excess is dumped in the US for about 3.5c kwh. Ontarians are actually partially subsidizing NY and Muchigan consumers. McGuinty crows about this being a good deal, generating export revenue.
I have little sympathy for Ontario voters getting the shaft from McGuinty & Co. They re-elected this band of leftard bunch. Screw me once, shame on you. Screw me twice, shame on me!
We Canadians Own The Podium.
MSM concedes: We slew Kyoto.
Next? CBC … Ready. Aim. Fire!

“Don’t blame the politicians, Canadians killed Kyoto”
“stephen gordon”
“It doesn’t matter what Canadians tell pollsters about how much they are concerned with climate change; what matters is the choices we make. And whenever we have been offered the choice of accepting personal inconvenience in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions or of making sure that fossil fuels are cheap and plentiful, we have consistently and overwhelmingly chosen the latter.
And politicians have paid attention.”

Well now we know, we leave and now they lost their piggy bank. Tough sh@t. The reason their mad is because they won’t get B’s of dollars from Canada. The UN can go find some other suckers to milk.
Ya gotta feel sorry for the CBC. Keeps running these polls and they keep turning out badly.
Thank you Mr. Prime Minister and the other “Honourable Gentlemen, as well as all the other Conservative members of parliament for your decisions and legislation regarding all the issues this fall. This great list is becoming almost too long for us mere mortals to remember.
A job well done.
God Bless you all and Merry Christmas,”

and in other climate news…
gore will now be able to predict more and larger hurricanes all by himself.
he’ll have to since the leading experts for the last 20 years say they never had it right and never will so they quit.
http://www.ottawacitizen.com/mobile/story.html?id=5847032
Two top U.S. hurricane forecasters, revered like rock stars in Deep South hurricane country, are quitting the practice because it doesn’t work.
William Gray and Phil Klotzbach say a look back shows their past 20 years of forecasts had no value.
The two scientists from Colorado State University will still discuss different probabilities as hurricane seasons approach — a much more cautious approach. But the shift signals how far humans are, even with supercomputers, from truly knowing what our weather will do next.
Gray, recently joined by Klotzbach, has been known for decades for an annual forecast of how many hurricanes can be expected each official hurricane season (which runs from June to November.) Southerners hang on his words, as even a mid-sized hurricane can cause billions in damage.
Last week, the pair dropped this announcement out of a clear, blue sky:
“We are discontinuing our early December quantitative hurricane forecast for the next year … Our early December Atlantic basin seasonal hurricane forecasts of the last 20 years have not shown real-time forecast skill even though the hindcast studies on which they were based had considerable skill.”
Simmy: “The Conservatives are still paying lip service to future reductions we all know won’t happen without paying penalties to the UN. I realise this evil green darkness will take time to unveil but the CPC are still lying hypocrites.”
Don’t be silly. Withdrawing from Kyoto means NO paying penalties to the UN, now or in future. What part of ‘withdrawing from Kyoto’ don’t you understand? Perhaps you should learn what the actual terms and conditions of the KP are before you vent off more nonsense.
As for “future reductions”, you don’t seem to understand that talk is cheap. By stating we are going to reduce emissions at some point in the future it leaves the Green slime with nowhere to stand right now. The Tories are able to gleefully point out that the Dippers have voted against every budget containing such programs. As to “lying hypocrites”, even Winston Churchill noted that “truth must be defended with a bodyguard of lies.” Seems you don’t really understand that we are and for a long time will be in a war with the Green goo.
Bluetech: “I’ll feel a lot better when Kent quits with his ‘We’ll do something about Climate Change” meme.”
So what is it you want? Action or talk? Me, I prefer action, which we got. This is politics, and that means keeping the enemy confused and off balance. See Winston Churchill above.
a@c, actually you’re quite right. Canada’s Kyoto quota was the severest per capita of any Annex 1 country. Our actual reduction to meet the Protocol (6% below 1990 levels) was approximately a 35-40 per cent total reduction by 2012, much higher than any other. We could only meet it by taking every single car and truck off the road. So we would have had to buy many billions in credits through the trading mechanisms.
And while Canada was vilified by the greenies for its stand on Kyoto, no one has stated the obvious: It was in fact Canada’s position that led the Durban conference to reform its anti-Western bias on climate change and seek a future solution that is more equitable.
But don’t expect the former enviro-journalist Peter Kent to receive any official accolades for standing firm — it has been too many years since he has worked for CBC on that file for anyone to remember. Only hard-core Lefties qualify to receive environmental awards in Canada (I think a law was passed somewhere to that effect).
Another recent “climate change” poll is here: http://www.cbc.ca/news/yourcommunity/2011/12/is-canada-on-the-right-track-when-it-comes-to-climate-change.html
Well done Canada. Lets hope a few more countries grow a pair as well.
Ouch! CBC just read off list of world media ganging up on poor Canada for the Kyoto thing.Seems the Tehran Times has noticed, and cbc had to highlight this for us.They really need to be focusing more on the PM’s Christmas card..way more important.
I love it when a poll comes together.
Kate, the update link no worky…
I have sent the congratulatory Emails with glee, oops didn’t mean to sound gay.

Is Canada right to pull out of the Kyoto Accord?

Never ceases to amaze me how the Left doesn’t yell and scream that the Oba-messiah should be required to sign onto Kyoto. The same way that the millionaire Oba-messiah (and his multi-millionarie wife Michele, who was independently wealthy long before Barack was) is not part of the 1% exploiters refusing to fix the system.
I guess the Left’s messiah has reached perfection, it doesn’t really matter what he does or does not do — he is an immaculate environmentalist and selfless economist by his mere flawless existence.
Do we know what Canada’s position on Durban is? I’m listening to Rutherford who had Peter Kent on and it sounds like they are signing on to whatever framework Durban is offering as well as forking over cash to the climate mitigation fund to the 3rd world. How much of this is just a bone for the conservative base while they move ahead business as usual?
If you’re going to Canada, go to Alberta (Harper’s home province) or Saskatchewan, home of Small Dead Animals, one of the best conservative (by US standards, not even by Canada’s much softer standards). Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal are all liberal wet dream cities.

Nice to see this support south of the border. Someone there also linked to the CBC poll.
Thanks Guys!
Two points. First, if the UNFCCC is saying what it seems to be saying then they are harming their own cause. They are abandoning their incremental approach to centralized governance by unelected official – being this blatant might spook the herd.
Secondly, I am glad that the CPC government has withdrawn from Kyoto but I am not exactly thrilled with their current environmental polices:
“The provincial Crown corporation SaskPower wants more time to meet carbon dioxide emission targets…
However, he said he won’t know how much the emissions will drop until 2017, which is two years after proposed regulations kick in.The new rules, he noted, call for a 70 per cent reduction at SaskPower’s power plants.”
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatchewan/story/2011/12/09/sk-sask-power-emissions-111209.html
As far as I know there is no viable technology to reduce CO2 by 70% on coal fired plants. It would mean shutting down about two thirds of the electricity supply in Sask. and then building NG plants within the next three years. This would cost billions and result in electricity prices skyrocketing. It would also destroy CPC votes in Sask for a generation.
“Jean Chrétien is warning Liberals that gun control and the Kyoto accord are dead because of Stephen Harper’s Tories, darkly noting that same-sex marriage and abortion rights could be next on the Conservative government’s chopping block. He even raises the return of the death penalty as a possibility.”
I though that crook was dead! What a POS!
In my opinion, Chretien is slippery. He’s the “little guy from Shawinigan” who boasted at a Liberal leadership convention that he is an INSIDER in China. No wonder he’s on their side.
He’s a legend in his own mind.
I guess steely knives are out of the question…looks like we might have to use hockey sticks or hakapiks…
Slap Shot at December 13, 2011 5:31 PM:
“Jean Chretien is warning…gun control…Kyoto…same-sex marriage…abortion…death penalty…”
What a flying sack of hypocritical pig s**t Chretien is! (I can’t believe I actually voted for the guy in the early 90’s). It was only a few years ago that Chretien himself would have taken a conservative position on many of today’s issues. Don’t blame Conservatives, Jean, just because you have personally flushed your own moral compass down the toilet.
Chretien reminds me of the lyrics by Great Big Sea, “Consequence Free”:
I could really use, to lose my Catholic conscience
Cuz I’m getting sick of feeling guilty all the time
I won’t abuse it, Yeah I’ve got the best intentions
For a little bit of anarchy but not the hurting kind
CHORUS:
I wanna be consequence free
I wanna be where nothing needs to matter
I wanna be consequence free
just sing Na Na Na Na Na Ne Na Na Na
(and currently the chorus of the Liberal Party of Canada)
The fear mongering environmentalists have succeeded in stealing the innocence of childhood – imagine how frightened this poor girl must be, yet her exploitation is praised – it’s bad enough that her mother has 2 brain tumors and she’s having to deal with that on top of being used to save the planet from man made climate change – truly sad:

Thanks, Maikeru, for the Ottawa Citizen poll: The other side is ahead by less than a percentage point. So, SDAers, get on over there!

I just listened to Minister Kent say that there is no doubt about it, the science is in, man is melting the ice caps and unless we act we are all doomed. (Well, maybe not exactly that, but that is the gist) I am going to have to reconsider some things. If this government is going to jump on the climate change bandwagon, and minister Kent is clearly on-board, well, then maybe it is time I jumped off. I cannot believe what I just heard that man say.
I will add that I am glad I did NOT send Kent an email thanking him. In light of his comments of a few minutes ago that would have been foolish.
now we need to pull out of the UN
Thank you Truenorthist for proving the point in my comment @11:02.
cgh @ 1:41…what say you now?
I will correct myself on another comment: Dion’s dog should be called Bamm!
I was celebrating also, until…

I can already hear the words fix bayonets, being shouted out in the future.
Why does anything with a youtube link get eaten by the filter?
I’ll shoot them an email as soon as I finish laughing at what JamesHalifax wrote at 8:23 AM. That may take a while. LOL!!! ROTFLMAO!!!! Hee, Hee, Hee, Hee! Oh, my God, that hurts!! Hoot! Hoot! Holler!! Woot! GUFFAW, GUFFAW!! GUFFAW!!!! Somebody give me some oxygen.
There are lots of respected conservatives, such as Lorry Goldstein, who believe that man can and does affect the climate. But they don’t place the importance on it, or the meaningless radical solutions, that the Left does. I think Peter Kent can probably be counted among the Goldstein conservatives, i.e.: Kyoto no; environment yes.
The saddest thing about the global mania surrounding climate change and CO2 is it is diverting research dollars and technological solutions from more significant environmental problems.
Have we already resolved the more palpable and scientifically observable problems related to pollution, such as garbage disposal, mercury, dioxins, chemicals, and a whole slew of other problems? Can we afford to reduce it all to a largely ideologically-based anti-capitalist anti-Western anti-scientific global “master theory” called CO2 and climate change, based on the say-so of a bunch of dooms-dayers with ulterior political motives?
If earth is exterminated because of man’s poor stewardship then it won’t be because of CO2 or climate change. It will probably be because we allowed ourselves to be diverted from the more important environmental issues. Or, alternatively, because Mother Earth simply got sick of humans being a bunch of liars and exploiting her for politics so she decided to show us who is really in charge.
Thumbs up to the PM!
And I could care less what Bishop Pupu thinks.
Where does he think Canada gets the money to send to his failed country?
We already contribute more than our fair share to the elites of the third world in the guise of ‘foreign aid’.
We don’t need to compound the folly with Kyoto ‘penalties'(for failing to pull off all our vehicles off the road and shut down the remaining industry to meet our ‘obligations’)
What an unholy black farce…
Yep, CO2 is gassing the planet, run for your very lives.
The only thing the UN is concerned about, is making sure the money tap is turned to the full on position.
You are all very bad ‘climate change deniers’!
‘Well if we can’t implement Kyoto, we’ll take your money anyway.’ These kleptocrats would lie the blue out of the sky for those daft enough to sign on to Kyoto with not the slightest intention of actually implementing its provisions. And now Chretien is wailing that they didn’t siphon enough funds from the Canadian people. Take a number and enjoy your retirement. All from the people who gave you the HRDC, gun registry, CWB and last but not least Adscam.
Chretien doesn’t even have the dignity to hold his blathering tongue. Thanks for the palaver its been delightful…but if you haven’t noticed your tired old party is in THIRD place.
Cheers

Did you really think that Peter Kent was going to say that global warming was a load of garbage? We are pulling out of Kyoto, thats good enough for me.
It would appear re the update that the UN wants to strongarm Canada, and that Harper and the Conservatives have forced the UNFCCC’s hand to no small degree.
Whatever good news has come from this is certainly blunted by the ongoing validation of the Climate Change Fraud by the government.
