  1. “produced with care in China”
Hmm..that could mean just about anything.
The bubbly toxic slomp that comprised this bags primal ingredients contained no human body parts.

  2. Nice. One more product line to be added to waste management comanies on their way to the land fill.

  3. I’ve been pointing this out since the supermarkets started pushing them.
“Would you like a green bag?” “No. They’re bad for the environment.” “But they’re made of recycled plastic!” “See this tag? Made in China. How much oil do you think was burned shipping the plastic there, making the bag, then shipping it back? How much CO2 do you think that produced? Oh, and regular old plastic bags are designed to biodegrade in sunlight, so there’s nothing wrong with them to begin with. Now give me my groceries in plastic bags, please.”

  4. Whole Foods is a boutique store for people with more income and fewer people to feed than I. Never so disappointed as after taking the off ramp in Orlando (on one of our Tampa to Halifax treks)especially to buy the evening’s sustenance…. that said, if I was single and flush- I would probably shop there daily 🙂

  5. In BC “local” produce is grown in greenhouses during the winter. The greenhouses are heated with wood, oil or electricity. So it’s better for the environment to buy mexican produce instead but try and explain that to a Vancouver greentard.

  6. You folks really should read the link that Pete provided above. The owner/founder of Whole Foods is far from some left-wing hippie. A few quotes:
“America became the wealthiest country because for most of our history we have followed the basic principles of economic freedom: property rights, freedom to trade internationally, minimal governmental regulation of business, sound money, relatively low taxes, the rule of law, entrepreneurship, freedom to fail, and voluntary exchange.”
“Most importantly, we need to radically cut the size and cost of government. One hundred years ago the total cost of government at all levels in the U.S.—local, state and federal—was only 8% of our GDP. In 2010, it was 40%[6]. Government is gobbling up trillions of dollars from our economy to feed itself through high taxes and unprecedented deficit spending—money that could instead be used by individuals to improve their lives and by entrepreneurs to create jobs.”
People rarely fit neatly into the little “right/left” boxes that you think they do.

  7. Alittle off topic, but to mention something about economic freedom in these times seems hihgly inappropriate. We are all debt slaves.
One has to look no further then last nights bailout of European banks by the Central Banks of the world through bank swaps (yes Canada included) and todays POMO cancellation by the FED.
There is no liquidity left in the market except for the spare change in your pocket which will be taken slowly through inflation (printing) or the outright monetization of banks through backdoor bailouts.
There are very danerous signs in the market today and IMO the fuse has been lit and these acitons will bring to the forefront all which is wrong in the markets.
I am beyong gobsmacked by these crooks.

  8. Daniel Ream, you missed the part about how much oil was burned by individual households driving the plastic to the recycling depot, then trucking the plastic to the coast from the depots so that it could be loaded on ships to China.
Except for aluminum, recycling makes no sense.

  9. The “Green Bag” I purchased at the grocery store says “100% polyester” (also made in China). What the heck, isn’t polyester a petroleum derivitive?!!! Whatever happened to cotton, which is in fact completely biodegradable?
Oh well, I guess it no longer matters — the “green” revolution is such a global fraud at this point that it is based purely on image rather than substance — just slap some green paint on something, label it “green”, and that’s all that matters. After all, it’s the Left ideology that counts, folks — you really don’t have to reduce pollution. The important thing is that we keep Communist China in business and producing all this fake junk for us and that we keep buying it.

  10. The guy who founded Whole foods is a libertarian. He is simply selling to a targeted market, green yuppies and health food types. I still prefer paper bags if you get them.

  11. “Produced with care in China”
Just like the Apple iPOD factory in China they put up netting to stop their suicidal employees from jumping off the third story onto the production and assembly lines.

  12. “Produced with care in China” Don’t make me laugh!
As everyone here knows, if you want to find hypocrisy you only have to look to the left.

  13. Canadian Tire also has, for sale, black supposed-eco bags made in CHINA. How environmentally pure is a bag made in CHINA? I stopped buying my groceries at a local supermarket that charges for plastic bags. It takes the money and donates it to The World Wildlife Fund, which is akin to Greenpeace, just a ‘black hole,’ global fundraising machine. When questioned, the manager said, “it’s a head office policy.” Fine. I’m supporting the OTHER supermarket, the one that is not so STUPID.

  14. Daniel Ream @ 11:21 AM says “regular old plastic bags are designed to biodegrade in sunlight”.
Nice thought but (at least in Calgary) all the bags go to a landfill and are buried so no sunlight so they can’t biodegrade that way. My bags do double duty, being used for picking up dogpoop, but they still go in the garbage and then to the landfill.

  15. Minnie, it’s illegal to send animal waste to the landfill, isn’t it? If it isn’t, it should be.

  16. Coach: Nope, I have always advised the scaleperson at the Calgary landfill that our garbage contains a bin of dog poop when asked if there are any “hazardous materials”. I have never been told to put it in a special container or do anything with it different than the rest of our household garbage.

  17. You are all missing the point…think of the hundreds of thousands of bag designers and bag engineers who were employed in America during the R&D phase…

  18. Jim @ 11:48, noted and yes, sometimes the “right/left” box looks weird.
I believe the point Robert makes in this thread is the irony of the phrase on the label.
Polyester and plastic bags are made from oil.
Paper bags could be made of Aspen tree pulp and Aspens grow like weeds.
    chutzpahticular, good for you.

  19. Made in China perhaps – but note they were “Designed with pride in the U.S.”. That must count for something.

  20. WholeFoods cleverly markets to people with more money than brains. Apparently, there are lots of them!

  21. My bags do double duty, being used for picking up dogpoop, but they still go in the garbage and then to the landfill.
    ~Minnie
Every element of those plastic bags, from the petroleum resin to the powdered rock filler, came out of the ground in the first instance.
It is fitting that they go back into the ground and throwing them into a landfill accomplishes that.
The real waste is sending them on multiple journies around the country and then across the world to produce a bag that will wear out and have to be replaced with either plastic grocery bags or another similar bag from China after going through the same wasteful journey.
Additionally, these “green bags” are cultures for mold and germs grown on spilled grocery debris which are decidedly unhealthy.

  22. Well said syncrodox, the USA must be so proud to have grocery bag designers. I guess this is part of obambi’s win the future plan-WTF.

  23. When dealing with Whole Foods, it’s wise to remember that it’s a Texas company. The founder is fully aware that his company caters to the same mindset that demanded ever-larger tail fins on late ’50s cars.
    T. Boone Pickens is from Texas. When money falls from the sky, remember that Texans wear big hats.
    Regards,
    Ric

  24. Great catch Robert, – laugh out loud funny. I was thinking Lizzie the May – green bag, designed in USA, exported to Canada with Chineese attributes.

  25. chutzpahticular
Yeah I have one of those CTC black bags….
At the checkout, I found they were giving them away….
I did/do find the big lettering somewhat foolish:
    “THIS BAG IS GREEN!”
Supermarts hereabouts in Onatariario charge for bags….I stuff 2-3 free Bulk Barn bags in my coat pocket….they are heavy guage and free.
I diligently recycle plastic packaging…especially in the colder months….

  26. Here just south of the border in WA we are dealing with this plastic bag ban nonsense as well. But econazis can multitask. You should see how many other aspects of daily life they are trying to regulate as well.
Here’s a new one for us: stormwater management. They are now forcing businesses to buy permits, run quarterly water quality tests on puddles that collect on their properties, and submit to frequent inspections by officials who can be state, local, OR third party non governmental organizations. Of course, there is also an annual report a business must file as well!
I’d be interested to know if you all up north have encountered this new trend in oppression.
