A lot of people in the UK live in government-subsidized accommodations called “council houses.” Here’s yet another story in a local newspaper about healthy, able-bodied council house dwellers who, like this woman, assume that the government should do everything but wipe their sorry arses:
Yes, if you find a mouse or a rat in your house it’s the government’s responsibility because…because…

My paternal grandfather’s 1st wife and a young child died in 1924 of typhus. She left him with six children, ages 4 to 17. He remarried later in 1924, as he had young children to take care of (no Liberal day care then). The lady he married was ten years younger than he was. Five years later, in Canada, one of his daughters by his 1st wife married an older brother of his 2nd wife. Now his son-in-law was also his brother-in-law.

Where does it say the tenant is responsible for repairs. The council has certain standards and might not want the tenants doing a substandard job. It is geared-to-income housing after all.
And, if it is a rat infestation, then the council should get to the bottom of it because the neighbourhood is most likely all council-owned.
Hah! The last time I saw a rat inside a house in which I was living I stabbed it in the chest with a steak knife. You should have heard it scream! It was just like a little miniature horror movie! Those council house puffs should just butch up and take care of business. If they don’t like the “Up close and personal” stuff then they could at least get a crossbow.

From the Simpsons. Homer is presiding over the wedding of Cletus and Brandine. “Hang on!” exlaims Homer; “you two are brother and sister!?”
“Oh, we’s all kinda thangs!” drawls Brandine.
Sadly, as with most cartoon clips, I could only find it in Spanish. It’s much funnier in English. Unless you’re from Mexico, I guess.

“In a powerful display of profound disappointment with President Obama, some of the Democratic Party’s biggest donors gathered Tuesday – not inside his tony San Francisco fundraiser at the W Hotel, but outside on the sidewalks carrying signs in protest of his policies.
“I don’t even know what he stands for,” said Susie Tompkins Buell, a co-founder of the Esprit de Corps clothing company and one of the most generous Democratic Party donors in the nation – instrumental in backing such powerhouse progressive organizations as the Democracy Alliance and Media Matters.”
“While the largest faction rallied against the pipeline, there were also anti-war protesters; supporters of Bradley Manning, the U.S. soldier accused of giving documents to WikiLeaks; people from the Occupy SF camp and a group protesting the Obama administration’s recent crackdown on medical marijuana dispensaries across California.”

The process of reconstruction, of rising from the ashes, of overcoming the trauma of having been deceived, exploited and manipulated – is drawn-out. It is difficult to trust again, to have faith, to love, to be led, to collaborate. Feelings of shame and guilt engulf the erstwhile followers of the narcissist. “BARACK OBAMA’S FOREIGN POLICY ON DISPLAY
The so-called “Arab Spring” has been nothing more than the abject spread of fundamental, extreme Islamic Jihad in these regions, threatening US interests and allies.
When there was a chance for true liberty and an end to militant islam during the protests and rebellion in Iran, Obama sat back and let them be slaughtered.
When there was an opportunity to have islamic jihad and militancy spread further in Egypt, Libya, Tunesia, and Yemen, Obama has done all in his power to help it succeed.
IMHO, this is not too suprising, given his disdain for the United States and its free market and constitution…and his apparent love for the Islamic call to prayer.”

Surely the Hutton executives aren’t really afraid of violence breaking out at their conference rooms? Maybe this location is more dangerous than is advertised….

The CBC just blows me away. In the comments following the story about David Anderson and his now-famous “Eskimo” video about the CWB, one astronaut turned it into a rant about how Canada participated in the murder of a “world leader who’s done more for his country than our government could ever hope to do”. I tried to respond, but the censors apparently had a problem with it, I guess they’d rather have that idiocy than someone wondering just what the hell was wrong with the guy.

This Week’s Applied Hayek: OWS Envy Edition
Via: PowerLine
As we continue to fixate on the inchoate but plainly radical demands/desires of (the lefty-losers) Wall Street Occupiers, this passage from Hayek’s famous chapter in The Constitution of Liberty on “Equality Value, and Merit” hits the spot dead on:
“When we inquire into the justification for these demands [to equalize all outcomes], we find that they rest on the discontent that the success of some people often produces in those that are less successful, or, to put it bluntly, on envy. The modern tendency to gratify this passion and to disguise it in the respectable garment of social justice is developing into a serious threat to freedom. Recently an attempt was made to base these demands on the argument that it ought to be the aim of politics to remove all sources of discontent. This would, of course, necessarily mean that it is the responsibility of government to see that nobody is healthier or possesses a happier temperament, a better-suited spouse or more prospering children, than anybody else. If really all unfulfilled desires have a claim on the community, individual responsibility is at an end. However human, envy is certainly not one of the sources of discontent that a free society can eliminate. It is probably one of the essential conditions for the preservation of such a society that we do not countenance envy, not sanction its demands by camouflaging it as social justice, but treat it, in the words of John Stuart Mill, as “that most anti-social and odious of all passions.”
It’s almost as if Hayek wrote this with Occupy Wall Street in mind.

“Russia’s aesthetic revolution: How Soviet building still influences today’s architects”
“An exhibition of Soviet architecture at the Royal Academy of Arts will showcase radical work of great prescience and experimental power. And, says Jay Merrick, its influence is still felt today”
“In the courtyard of London’s Royal Academy of Arts stands the 20th century’s most avant-garde strand of architectural genetics. The veering red spiral, intersected by a girder jutting through it like a rocket launcher, is a copy of the original model of the Monument to the Third International, designed by Vladimir Tatlin in 1920. Had it been built to its intended scale as the headquarters of the Communist party, it would have dwarfed the Eiffel Tower. In a world awash with “iconic” architecture, nothing comes even close to radiating the raw potency of this truly revolutionary form.”

maz2 @ 12:58, I just finished The Harvest of Sorrow a couple of weeks ago.
Currently I am reading Robert Service’s “Comrades: A History of World Communism”.
Interesting that both Conquest and Service were sons of British Communists who during the late 30s, early 40s, discovered what a monstrous ideology that Marxism and its child communism were. Both fathers were also Cambridge friends of the Philby, McLean, Burgess et al bunch that spied for the Soviets and ultimately defected.
Robert Service and Robert Conquest have written a number of books exposing communism, Russian and world wide, for the evil that it is.
