Might Mr Akin be being ironic?
Update: The conclusion of a piece byKevin Libin at the National Post’s “Full Comment”:
The crass exploitation of Jack Layton’s death
…
When columnists in this newspaper dared to crash the public shiva for Layton with controversial critiques of his deathbed letter or plans for his state funeral, they were vehemently attacked as insensitive and disrespectful to the dead. But there’s a point where publicly advertising your sympathy while calculatedly drawing attention to yourself looks awfully insensitive and disrespectful, too. Imagine if a company like Trek bicycles marked Layton’s passing by issuing press releases expressing grief, while advertising how much he enjoyed pedaling their durable, light, fast, and fun-to-ride two-wheelers. Or if Sleeman offered a public consolation while asking us to take comfort in the fact that his living years were made that much sweeter by the extra body and clean finish of their Silver Creek Lager. Even if there was some truth to the claims, we’d have no trouble recognizing them as crass exploitation of the man’s death for promotional purposes. When activists and non-profits spike their eulogies with commercials for their pet causes, the tactlessness may be slightly subtler. But it’s there, just the same.
Upperdate: Even one of the Ottawa Citizen’s house progressives, Janice Kennedy, can’t take it no more:
…A great deal has been embarrassingly over the top.
Hordes of sobbing strangers on the street, a questionable state funeral (with full television coverage), Imagine pealing out from the bells of the Peace Tower – all this reflects little but a collective popcultural desire to bathe in the waters of emotional excess.
To defend, as some experts have, this mass outbreak of recreational grief as appropriate because the public “knew” Jack is charitable, but awkward. Unless you know the deceased as family member, colleague or friend, you simply don’t know him on a level personal enough to permit full-bore, teardrenched grieving. “The nation’s grief,” as media call it, is manufactured…
Not only does the post-mortem hyperbole do nothing to honour Layton’s name or memory, it cheapens it, turning it into something so grotesquely untrue it becomes laughable…
Tee hee.
Uppestdate: Mr Akin keeps crankin’ em out:
NDP organize “celebrate Layton’s life” events across Canada
by DavidAkin on Fri 26 Aug 2011…
Sun News Network will have live coverage of Jack Layton’s state funeral from Toronto beginning at 1400 ET Saturday. But if you can’t make to Toronto (or to your TV set), the NDP have posted a list of places where well wishers and supporters will be gathering across the country.
“This Saturday, in communities across the country, people are coming together to watch Jack Layton’s Celebration of Life, live from Toronto. From St. John’s to Victoria and from Terrebonne to Courtenay, these large and small communities will have the opportunity to celebrate the life and honour the work of the popular New Democrat leader. Here is a list of events we have heard are taking place across Canada tomorrow…”
Beyond Uppestdate: Publius summarizes:
The Layton Lamentations
The Cult of Jack Grows and Grows!
Scenes from the mourning:
Christie Blatchford fails to genuflect to an idol of the age…
All this for an innocuous piece on Jack! Do recall the Leftist vitriol that flowed at the death of John Paul II. I doubt the writers of those slander pieces received a fraction of the hate directed at Ms Blatchford. Then again JP II was only a Pope…
There we have it. Dippers, Canada’s reality impaired community.

The Layton sentiment has been somewhat over the top, but it’s still just standard boilerplate, as was Jack’s last letter.
Sun News and others have been paying far too much attention to it. It shouldn’t spend so much time throwing dirt on the other side when there are far more important issues out there.
“Some people are born on third base and go through life thinking they hit a triple.”
Saint Jacks party is now in the hands of a dedicated separatist. I suppose it doesn’t matter who holds the reins.
Saint Jacks party is now in the hands of a dedicated separatist. I suppose it doesn’t matter who holds the reins
despicable really
In keeping with the late socialist’s high office, I’d like to contribute a slightly soiled/greasy carrot.
He might have enjoyed the joke, if not, too bad.
Let’s see:
Jack Layton Parkway
State Funeral
Maybe we should add sainthood AND the NOBEL Prize.
All that’s left to include is an elephant and some clowns in a claxton equipped jalopy!!!
The girl at the “massage parlour” where Jack U Layton went for his Shiatsus is said to have sent her condolences to Ms. Chow, she said she was sorry to see “stubby” go. Now that is a classy immigrant!
One other thing, I love Sun news, but I switch over to the Antiques Roadshow or even the Oprah network when David “the leftielovin” Akin comes on, doesn’t matter if he is promoin, or doing his sorry LaytonIggy suckin Suzuki dog and pony show, can’t take any more pukin this week!
Lightning hit the CN tower 25 times last night. Seems like someone bigger that Jack is pissed that the TO Stick is going to be lit up NDPEE orange
“Steven Page (from Barenaked Ladies)…”
Now that’s funny and ironical for two reasons.
Back in 1991, it was Layton’s beloved leftie-land comrades at Toronto City Hall who got all annoyed by the band’s name because it “objectified” women.
And secondly of course, it was the faux-precocious Steven who was caught snorting “calcium” dust in New York State in 2008.
(Incidentally, is it over yet? Is it safe to come out now?)
Ezra Levant in an orange wig, now that’s a circus act befitting the subject he was discussing on his show.
The hypocrisy of the Left knows no bounds. They profess to be in favour of free speech while attacking and slandering anyone whose opinion they disagree with.
It should be interesting to watch the NDP for the next few months with their fill-in leader transitioning from a Separatist to a Federalist.
We don’t watch Akin because we watch Brett Baier on Fox at that time. Good thing too . . . we caught John—the fantastic!—Robson interviewing Akin about Layton the other evening. Akin was inarticulate: he said absolutely nothing of substance—pure pablum.
Why on earth does this apparently clueless, namby-pamby have his own show? Does anyone know?
I’m thinking of heading to Nathan Phillips Sq. this morning and posing as a mourner and trying to get an interview with a reporter… I want to see if they’d spot that I was being facetious… I’d say sommething like, “You know, we’ve had a lot of heavy rains in the past week… I think those are tears from God”.
Considering everything else that they’ve heard and, of course, agree with, I could probably lay it on really thick without arousing suspicion…. I’d conclude with a biting of the knuckle, saying, “I just don’t know how I’m going to get through this”… the reporter, I’m sure, will place his/her hand on my shoulder, saying “Hang in there, friend”.
“Unless you know the deceased as family member, colleague or friend, you simply don’t know him on a level personal enough to permit full-bore, teardrenched grieving.”
Except for those grieving for the handouts they were counting on Jack! to deliver, which now will never come. They’re in mourning for that third big screen TV they wanted for the back bedroom.
I will be celebrating his life today by drinking screwdrivers.
The orange represents his party, while the vodka represents the Russians that he admired.
It’s the least that I can do.
I confess that upon hearing of the demise of Taliban Jack, my first thought was – “Too bad his screwy ideas didn’t die with him.”
Was I being insensitive?
Must we now endure years of yet another attempt by the lefty mainstream (CBC) to cannonize a creepy “little lenin” like we have with T. Douglas and P. Trudeau?
Drape this guys coffin with that checkered terrorist scarf, stamp a hammer and sycle on it and put him away.
I detested these people in life and can’t seem to muster up any regret or respect now that they’re dead.
Hopefully this will mark the beginning of the end of the rise of the NDP. Who can replace him as leader? In my opinion Jack WAS the NDP.
RIP Jack. You worked tenatiously to destroy any liberty or decentcy left in my country. Don’t come back in another body.
A wise man once said ” The measure of a man’s real character is what he would do if he knew he never would be found out”.
This sums up Jack’s character quite well.
I’ll always remember him as the man who selflessly would leave the comfort and warmth of his wife and home to pedal through the mean and slushy streets of Toronto to enrich the lives of others.
He did not do this for publicity,on the contrary, he kept his charity secret. As little as 5 months ago,he was downplaying his kindness.
Yes,Jack was one of a kind, spreading cheer in short bursts to society’s most vulnerable.
RIP Mr.Layton,we hardly knew ya.
Trying to watch some of the Layton funeral. It comes as no surprise that the service was organized by the Paul Wellstone Funeral Home.
While it is not quite as bad as that debacle, its getting close.
The REV. Dr. Brent Hawkes: “These are my academic robes, not my religious robes, out of respect for other religions/traditions.”
Huh?
Brent Hawkes is, apparently, a “Christian” minister (with a Divinity degree from Anglican Trinity College, U. of T.) but he shies away from wearing Christian robes.
Turmel is reading from Philippians 2 without any mention of the central message of the passage:
In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Chr**t J*sus:
Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!
Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that J*sus Chr**t is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Did Turmel even mention that her reading was from the Christian Bible — that it was a reading from Philippians? The Muslim woman cited the Koran when she read.
Over and out. So far! …
… The Conservatives’ faces say it all: Go on, NDP, s*it all over our government and the ROC who don’t agree with the NDP agenda. Go ahead. We’re listening. We’re taking note. We gave you a very generous opportunity to honour Jack Layton, the man.
You’ve gone way over the top, to deify him, and along with that, to insult us, to insult all the other parties, to insult Canadians who didn’t vote NDP — a whole lot of Canadians, BTW — so, we’re listening, we’re watching, and we won’t forget.
The 2009-2010 “Living off the Public Teat Sweepstakes Award” goes to:
Party Leaders: Total Expenditures
PM Stephen Harper CPC : $281,255.67
Gilles Duceppe BQ : $482,602.58
Michael Ignatieff LPC : $570,984.10
Jack Layton NDP : $628,913.68
Jack Layton of the NDP (the people’s party?) with a grand expenditures total of $628,913.68. Combined with his wife Olivia Chow’s total expenditures of $530,304.73, this happy couple managed to scrape by at the taxpayers expense to the tune of $1,159,218.41.
P. Trudeau’s state funeral in 2000 cost the Canadian taxpayer $665,455.00 after serving as Prime Minister for 15 years. Jack Layton has only been opposition leader for a few months, the price tab on his state funeral should be interesting.
Consolation:
Savings to the Canadian taxpayer to not have to pay a ‘golden pension’ to Jack Layton:
PRICELESS

Brent Hawkes minister? at Layton’s funeral
Brent Hawkes, CM (born in Bath, New Brunswick) is a Canadian clergyman. Since 1977, he has served as senior pastor of Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto for LGBT parishioners, and is one of Canada’s leading gay rights activists.[1]
Born into a Baptist family, Hawkes has Bachelor of Science (1972) and Bachelor of Education (1973) degrees from Mount Allison University, and Master of Divinity (1986) and Doctor of Ministry (2001) degrees from Trinity College, an Anglican institution at the University of Toronto.[1] His church serves as a faith community for about 575 congregants at regular Sunday worship.
Hawkes lives in Toronto with John Sproule, his partner of more than twenty years. They married on March 7, 2006.
For those not savy LGBT is Lesbians, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual
When Hawkes in his sermon at Layton’s funeral referred to his mother-in-law don’t be deceived thinking that it is mother-in-law in our terms of thinking.
They treated Christie the same way they are allowed to treat pro-life supporters and conservatives who refuse to submit to their shrill crys of civility at all cost. Nevermind that mindless lot of thugs never partake of civility.
Would someone please tell the loonie left that today isn’t audition day for Canadas Got Talent.
I cut off a swath of flowers this morning and lay them on the graves of brave family members that battled and lost to cancer. Honest, hardworking people….and no doubt their “estate” taxes went to pay the likes of Layton and the wife.
BTW…Is there any other political figure in Canadian history that needed 3 burial plots?
What was the new cancer Jack died of, and why the secrecy?
What was the political advantage in keeping it secret?
Stan @ 8:28 PM, perhaps the political advantage for the NDP was just that, keeping it a secret?
I think most people have figured out what Jack Layton died of. Jack, family and the NDP were not hesitant of telling the world of his prostate illness but the curtain has been drawn on the fatal disease he could not overcome – this is all another indication of a serious flaw in Layton’s character when on a serious issue he chose to deceive and obfuscate and treat Canadians as turnips. This was his doing and his choice so he must also suffer the consequences of this deceit in his final days.
