Incidentally, for those on Facebook, take a look at this group. All sorts of twits are bragging about the crimes they committed last night. I think the collective IQ of Vancouver is being exposed as much, much lower than average.

I struggled with whether or not I should let my son see the riot action last night; in the end I think it’s a good lesson for him to learn, and these are the 2 things I said to him about it:
“Just because someone is older than you does not mean they deserve your respect, and never let anyone tell you otherwise. People need to earn your respect by being good.”
“This is what being a bully when you’re little can lead to. Never hang out with bullies, and never imitate them or believe them when they think they’re being cool.”
In his case it’s redundant since he has pretty much always known this, but nothing like a real-life example to help make the point stick.

I think it’s more accurate to say that this is revealing people to be morons.
In other words, the problem is not that Vancouver is below average – it’s that you had too high an opinion of what the average was.
(Well, that and that with a few million people in the Lower Mainland, that leaves lots of stupidity even with a normal distribution.)

None of the qualities you list are incompatible with enjoying what we now consider “barbaric” entertainment – and what was the height of culture at the time.

Maybe the animals should do it. Horses and dogs tend to itimidate a lot more than a cop that won’t do anything. The cop on a horse has a pretty good viewpoint to spot trouble before it gets out of control.
Back in the day I had the excellant good fortune to witness UK mounted police do their thing.
A riot…”mods” versus “rockers”….were having a diustup…serveral hundred per side….3 mounties sorted it out.
Initially it was just the cops busting heads with riot battons until some genius decided a mass rush to dismount a mountie….the mountie hung on and the horse did the rest….bodies flying, serious multiple injuries….
A “hunter” is a cross between a heavy draft horse and a thoroughbred…..a tall horse with big feet that can kick a guy into the middle of next week……

You know, the -real- cause of this riot is that car owners and shop owners etc. are -not allowed- to protect their property.
Anybody think that parking garage would have been torched if the first guy with a molotov cocktail got shot? I’m doubting it, myself.
Realistically, is a cop going to risk getting hurt or worse yet, sued, to protect your inventory? Nuh uh.
