With the recent federal election now a distant memory, it’s time for our State Broadcaster to speculate on the results of the October 19, 2015 election:
“The majority government won by Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Monday could be his one and only, according to a focus group of Canadian voters. A collection of factors allowed for the Conservatives to decisively win 167 seats in the spring election…..Those factors may never occur again at the same time to produce the conditions that proved to be the winning one for Harper…”

loki – any corruption in B.C. politics, from provincial to local, is driven by foreign funding to all the eco-activists organizations in this province. This needs to be looked at very, very closely, particularly by the RCMP.
Like so many of these ‘studies’ the message is not so much one of meaningful insight but more of a demean and diminish drive-by.
Absent from the Ensight article is any thought of who would displace the Conservative government. Could they be thinking that the NDP players will be ready for prime time in 2015? Perhaps they feel Mr. Rae will have found a way to get air to stay in the Liberal party wheels.
Also interesting is this statement:
“The thing about qualitative research is that when everybody in your sample tells you the same thing — and we talked to Quebecers, we talked to urban professionals, we talked to rural people, young people, Conservatives and so on, they all told us the same thing — when that happens, it’s pretty reliable,” Watt said”
I don’t know if Mr. Watt has forgotten his basic statistics training or he has an agenda, but when a random sample yields ‘everybody in your sample tells you the same thing’ it is a flawed sample and cannot be used for population estimates, unless of course, you have a predetermined answer in mind.
The CBC never fails to amaze.
Please do not link to CBC again. It only encourages them and give SDA readers a bad stomach ache.
I don’t think there is a whole lot the CPC can do about the funding. They can reduce it and bring in some financial accountability but scrapping it is just a rallying point.
The CBC has lost a lot of credibility over the last year. There are conservative posters going there and leaving comments. They stand out from the dross. The CBC used to block those posts. Numerous complaints to the ombudsman have embarrassed them into democracy.
I made a complaint..big deal..I got the form letter..big deal.. I replied to the ombudsman you have the title, do the job, Comments went in.
I use it as a tool to help people question why they think what they do and correct facts that are wrong. The CBC can only be blamed for supporting a segment of society, the posters are responsible for what they post. Make them question.
Harper should be able to inflict enough misery and sorrow on those bastard of the left to keep them weeping in their sandboxes for rest of their disgusting and shallow lives.
What’s that old saying …”If you do it right, once is enough”.
However, I think reality has bitten and there’s no going back … Life is conservative by nature and we are now forced to face it … the fantasies of the left are played out and there’s no more money to prop it up.
Good call.
On the other hand Harper may still be here, and the CBC not.

‘(cant even remember was it the petty dief or the gregarious bow-tie pearson)’
It was that squeaky little wimp Pearson. Also, you have coloured the history somewhat (see below).
Folks at SDA do get it and you need to get over the election.
‘Concerned about the show’s approach to the news, the CBC fired hosts Watson and LaPierre in April 1966, just before the end of the TV season. This resulted in a public outcry for weeks as viewers organized demonstrations, wrote letters and made angry phone calls, CBC staff threatened to resign, newspaper editorials fulminated about political interference in the decision, and politicians demanded a parliamentary inquiry.
A parliamentary committee hearing was convened, and Prime Minister Lester Pearson appointed Vancouver Sun publisher Stuart Keate as a special investigator. CBC president Alphonse Ouimet told the committee that CBC management had been battling the show’s producers for two years, and that the show had consistently ignored CBC policies.[2]
Following two weeks of mediation, Keate said it was clear that there had been “mistakes made on both sides” and recommended that the CBC board of directors do a better job of explaining to the public its decision to fire Watson and LaPierre.[3] CBC directors immediately reaffirmed the firing of Watson and LaPierre, while admitting that the way they were fired had been a mistake.[4]
The dispute heated up again in July, leading producer Douglas Leiterman to halt work on a new season of programs.[5] Leiterman said he was told by CBC that his contract for the show would only be renewed if he signed a pledge to behave himself, and that he believed that Bud Walker—the CBC vice-president who had fired Watson and LaPierre—had been given a promotion to oversee all CBC English programming.[6] The CBC denied that Walker had been promoted, fired Leiterman and cancelled the show.[7]’
Sorry, but “Good call” gets a FAIL as far as headlines go, especially when there are better ones like: “The Audacity of Hope.”
Have a great weekend, eh.
This “focus[sed on us]”, lefty group probably met in Margaret Atwood’s living room. These people are so out of touch and full of themselves. Fie on them!
I’m reading Victoria Glendinning’s fine biography of Leonard Woolf (Virginia’s husband) and just last night, I read their assessments of the “Left” of which Leonard was very much an insider. (Virginia wasn’t much into the political scene.)
The Woolf’s Indictments of the Left:
Virginia Woolf: “. . .the only honest people are the artists [that’s debateable!], & that these social reformers & philanthropists get so out of hand, & harbour so many discreditable desires under the disguise of loving their kind, that in the end there’s more fault to find with in them than with us.”
Leonard Woolf, a socialist insider: “. . . toward the end of his life [1880-1969], voiced exactly the same thoughts. ‘I am sure that if one could look deep into the minds of those of us who are on the Left in politics (including myself), Liberals [check], revolutionaries [CBC], socialists [NDP, Bloc], communists [Green Party], pacifists, and humanitarians, one would find that their political beliefs and desires were connected with some very strange goings on down among their ids and their unconscious,’ evidenced by the patent dissonance between their ‘gentle [now arrogant] high mindedness’ and their ‘absolute verbal [now physical] violence.’”
TAKE THAT, CBC!
LindaL@ 9:08: I hear you, but I’m not so sure Canadians would have their knickers in knots about some serious trimming of the CBC, especially its “news” department, which is nothing more than a fully blown propaganda machine for the Left. Only about 7% of Canadians bother to watch. (I listen to CBC Radio2: the CBC wunderkinds—in their own estimation—have already hollowed out the classical music side of that. I wouldn’t mind a return to the previous programming.)
If the Conservatives don’t do some serious hit back with the CBC, I’ll think they’re suffering from Stockholm Syndrome and I’ll be thoroughly pi**ed off! It’s MY MONEY the CBC’s misspending. Enough already! And the sooner the Conservatives move on this, the better: it’s at least four years until an election. Political parties know that electors’ memories are pretty short: do the tough things early in one’s mandate and, if necessary, e.g., if the electorate seems dissatisfied, ease up closer to the election. So, Conservatives, re the CBC, what are you waiting for?
(RFB, great posts, but, please, could we have some paragraphing? Thanks!)
The refusal of CBC to comply with FOI requests may eventually play some role in the levels of funding that government is willing to approve.
The CBC needs to learn how to play nice in the sand box- it expects no less from everyone else.
Why get in the way of the CBC.. They are lost in Stupid.. They bagged Iggy by pushing the Super Team.. Quebec voted for the NDP LEADER thinking they were chossing the next PM.. The odd Couple indeed
Let the CBC keep destroying themselves…

NOT WITH MY $$$$$!
The only solution is for the heritage ministry to cancel ALL funding, then sell off the assets, take the money not wasted and use it for something else. ANYTHING ELSE.
sharpshooter @ 9:39: “anybody who thinks our newly minted fox tv-wannabe outlet is going to *actually* expose corruption in the right wing is living in fairyland.”
This is the usual, lefty, drive-by smear: mere assertion, no proof.
So far, SUN News has been very even handed. They’ve had many commentators and guests from the left—Kinsella and Bob Rae come to mind—and don’t let Conservatives—e.g., John Baird—off the hook. SUN commentators and hosts, e.g., John Robson and Ezra Levant, have criticized the CPC in a way the CBC NEVER DOES the Left. So, sharpshooter, what’s your point?
You also write, “I can see none of you at SDA ‘get it’ yet. (hint: forest, trees)” We don’t? If you’re so sharp, prove it.
How about this for a call:
Within one year Sun TV News will receive licensing status similar to CBC and CTV.
A collection of factors allowed for the Conservatives to decisively win 167 seats in the spring election…..Those factors may never occur again at the same time to produce the conditions that proved to be the winning one for Harper..
Those factors will never occur again.
Iggy is gone and Stephen Harper had headed a minority government since 2006.
News Flash for Leftists:
The world is not a static place.(example: climate change is natural and cyclical, the temperature isn’t static)
Time to jettison that part of your world view.
I feel sure Stephen Harper will win with a majority again next time.
It’ll probably prove to be an even bigger majority too.
What a load of crap. Had to laugh in the comments one person saying that the NDP have been very successful financially at the provincial level. Not in B.C. they haven’t.
Soon we will see the demise of the CWB’s monopoly & the long gun registry. It has taken years to get to this point.
We need a similarly tenacious & long term approach to the CBC & other still festering problems such as the HRC’s.
These are all leftist/statist icons & will not go quietly. We are equally resolved that they will go away, game on!
Even in defeat the MSM tries to fight back.
Did anyone see the CBC news last night. Their discussion panel talked about the results of the election and looked like they were attending a funeral. I expected to see black arm bands on them.
Rex Murphy in is commentary paid tribute to Preston Manning for much of what has happened over the last few years. I have a great deal of respect for Preston and don’t think he’s been given nearly the recognition that he deserves.
“Twelve separate focus groups, conducted across the country on Tuesday by Ensight Canada, picked the brains of 134 Canadians on why they voted the way they did.”
12 separate focus groups… 134 Canadians total. roughly 11 people in each focus group.
Since when can 11 people anywhere tell you anything about the way people could vote in any region? Never even mind 134 people representing 35 MILLION.
Statistics are the easiest thing in the world to skew 96% of the time with a margin of error +/- 12%, 19 times out of 20.
And even with all that ability to twist statistics (wording of questions, sample size and location, etc etc) their study STILL says people trusted Harper to take care of the economy etc.
It’s too ridiculous to talk about really, I mean, how is this news?
Defund the CBC, give the money to Sun TV and encourage ex-Mothercorspe employees to submit their applications to Ezra Levant for his consideration…..
***BUZZ…BUZZ…BUZZ…BUZZ…***
Damn alarm clock, but what a wonderful dream!
It would be a great April Fool’s joke for next year to have the CPC announce this very thing, that the CBC has had thier turn, now the money will go to Sun!
Perhaps I’m unduly pessimistic, but I’m not counting on a majority Conservative government to do what needs to be done with the CBC. We need a mass movement, legions of Canadian signatures on petitions, and the like, to get that done.
Knight 99 at 1:04 AM: “Stupid libs, we took your soother away because you are bad and now you’re simply bawling in tantrums, it’s best to let you cry yourself to sleep now.”
==========================
Ya, but do we have to listen to it?
Eskimo at 12:38 PM: “Defund the CBC, give the money to Sun TV”
==================
Not!! I am categorically opposed to any media organ receiving funding from government. We are served properly by the press only when it is free and only when it’s survival depends on it’s ability to attract readers/viewers/listeners, which can only be demonstrated by the ability of said organ to attract advertising revenue sufficient to cover it’s costs and provide a reasonable profit, which it won’t be able to do if it constantly offends a large segment of the population.
If the CBC had to survive that test, it would have been assigned to the historical dust-bin eons ago.
Louise at 1:43,
I agree with you about the funding, but the playing field needs leveling in terms of licensing priveleges.
I’m scandalized. How dare our ‘State Broadcaster’ report on this obvious anti-Conservative propaganda. You don’t see our privately owned, Conservative Party-endorsing national news outlets covering this drivel.
Oh wait…
Louise – exactly.
glasnost, you are correct regarding a level playing field – equality of opportunity.
I expect that PMSH will do even better in the next election
than he did in the recent one. The natterings of the MSM about entirely contrived “scandals” influenced few.
It has not fully entered the collective consciousness that his tight control
was partly because the Conservatives were maneuvering in a hostile environment,
and partly to keep down real scandal – peculation; but it will.
PMSH has shown no evidence of a secret agenda, or of being a “closet fundamentalist”. He is, in fact, a centrist.
In five years’ time it will be evident to the meanest and most biased intelligence
that Stephen Harper is a centrist and a competent centrist, and they will give the Conservatives
an even better majority than the one they earned last Monday.
You got it, Louise. The CBC, no matter how odious, is a sideshow compared to the other priorities the CPC government must work on. Stirring up a firestorm over defunding the CBC is counterproductive.
PMSH will move on files like the CBC and other social files, but, only when we and I mean the Big We, a solid majority of Canadians tell him we want him to. As you said, mass movements, legions of signatures.
Perhaps I’m unduly pessimistic, but I’m not counting on a majority Conservative government to do what needs to be done with the CBC. We need a mass movement, legions of Canadian signatures on petitions, and the like, to get that done.
Posted by: Louise at May 6, 2011 1:17 PM
Yup. And I think that an organized, mass boycott of companies/products that advertize during the CBC news programs would work.
…move on files like the CBC and other social files…
It depends on what you mean by “move”. It seems to me that the “must-carry” privilege, with respect to news outlets, should be available to all or none, and that it is an easy philosophical issue that could be accomplished at no cost. Maybe I’m just naive.
Jamie MacMaster at 2:09 PM, you’d have to tell me who/what those are, since I put my TV in storage about five or six years ago and will probably never take it out again.
Can somebody please tell me why we need the CRTC deciding what we are entitled to watch and not watch? Or why we need it at all?
“Must carry”, glasnost, is a regulatory issue that goes way beyond the CBC.
To minimize the slapdown from our host for going off-topic, I’ll say only that I mean “move” to be action taken in response to a clearly indicated desire throughout the country for changes to social institutions. Mass movements, legions of signatures, driven by citizens.
Sorry, Kate.
Louise – My daydream was extremely tongue in cheek, not to be taken internally. The thought of lefty exploding heads is what drives many of my fantasies! WRT to business, I firmly believe in sink or swim with no handouts. As the sole propiertor of my own company where I enjoy the sine wave of the construction/engineering industry, if I don’t work, my family doesn’t eat and we loose everything. Simple as that. (Think digital – either/or. Off or on. No mushy middle)This is a foreign concept to much of those “60 percenters” that think I’m a mean, corporate fat cat loving, Bible-thumping, gun toting redneck. Like there’s something wrong with any of these descriptors!
Louise – might I also add that my “sink or swim” applies to political parties as well. If you belong to a political party that has a bitchin’ policy that people are willing to get behind enmass and support said party with their own personal money, all the power to you. This is the pure organic definition of grass roots support. Not one nickle of taxpayer money should go to political parties because “fundraising is hard work” or “it’s not fair that the other party has so much money and we don’t”. Sorry kiddies (LPC, NDP, former Bloc), no free ponies. The Reform Party began as basement get togethers in Calgary. Now the Conservatives have a majority. That’s how it should work. Heck, if the Liberals work hard, in 20 years they too could rebuild and graps the brass ring. I hope not, but as I said, this is how it SHOULD work. Cheers.
Just think back over the last number of years when Stephen Harper was in Reform and then the Alliance and uniting the right into the CPC.
The MSM has never once been correct on their predictions of Stephen Harper, the Greatest Prime Minister that Canada has ever had.
That’s right. NEVER ONCE!!
This focus group will also be proven quite incorrect in 2015.
Count on it.
Eskimo, that you’re a “mean, corporate fat cat loving, Bible-thumping, gun toting redneck” does it for me. Well done! Carry on!
Ezra’s been railing against the CRTC, on air, a lot these days.
He’s really worth watching: iconoclastic, caustic, knowledgeable, and FUNNY!! The lefties hate him. Yeah!
…corporate fat cat loving, Bible-thumping, gun toting redneck…
back in the day;
60% voted against Jean Chretien and gun registry.
today Jc sez Bob Rae to lead the Libs.
another gift.
Time to use the leftist tactics against them:
An initial 20-25% cut from CBC funding, to start. When the screeching begins, use the “we can either fund the CBC with this money they could raise independently on their own, or we can fund MRI’s and more specialists for the provinces. What would you rather fund?”
It’s facile and simplistic, but the left uses it ALL the time to defend their bureaucratic waste and sloth. Cretin used it shamelessly to defund the military.
Faster, please.
