On Sun TV News, Ezra just covered the story of a man in the lower mainland of BC whose house was raided by police (or some law-enforcement agency) who suspected a grow-op because the fellow’s monthly power consumption was higher than normal (turns out he had a jacuzzi.)
They found nothing, but he had to pay $5,200 — an “inspection fee”, or so, I couldn’t quite catch it. The “inspectors” were there for half an hour, he says.
Strangest story I’ve heard in a while, but he’s not alone, apparently: this elderly gentleman “was billed $5,200 for an inspection that found he was growing flowers and cucumbers in the basement of his Mission home.”

Sharpshooter, ref the untendered F35’s. This has been said before but it obviously needs to be said again. Military projects don’t happen like that anymore, because there is nobody out there designing fighters in the hopes that they might sell them to the government. It hasn’t worked that way in several generations of aircraft. Back in the old days, Convair, Rockwell, Douglass, Martin, Boeing, North American, Hughes, Curtiss-Wright, Bell, Grumman, Lockheed, etc etc etc would use their own money to design aircraft and then try to sell them to the government. We are now down to two major aircraft makers, neither of which is rich enough to do that on their own. Instead the government pays them to design the aircraft they want and then buys them on a cost plus basis. We paid into the design and development of the F35 because we need new aircraft. The contract tendering came at the time we decided who we were going to pay to design us an airplane.
Do you like the price of food? It is only going up. U.S. needs more corn for gas. But that is the green way.

What got me when I looked at the recounts was the number of spoiled ballots coming from the Quebec riding. I did a quick glance at that number for all ridings … I figure Quebec ridings had about 4 or 5 times the number of spoiled ballots than the CDN average.

In foreign policy, as in domestic, Canadians became English-speaking Scandinavians.
Not any more. The past decade has heard the melancholy, long withdrawing roar of the Canadian Liberals. In 2000, they won 172 seats in the House of Commons; in 2004, 135; in 2006, 103; in 2008, 77; now they have been reduced to 33. Their leader, the former BBC presenter Michael Ignatieff, lost his own riding (as Canadian constituencies are known); so did the hapless leader of the Bloc Québécois, Gilles Duceppe. The separatists now have just four seats in the Commons, prompting John Ivison’s delicious observation that “no-one should be lamenting the demise of a party that has as many different words for grievance as the Inuit do for snow”.
A fair number of Liberal and Bloc voters went to a loony Left party called the NDP, whose support peaked when voters learned that its leader, Jack Layton, had been caught in a state of undress during a police raid on a “massage parlour”.
None the less, the Conservatives finally have their majority – and with it, the effective leadership of the English-speaking peoples. Stephen Harper is perhaps the most pro-British (and pro-American) leader in the world. In one of his first speeches as Prime Minister, he spoke movingly to a London audience about lucky his country was to have been founded in the British political tradition, and how the inherited folkright of common law was the basis of Canada’s freedom. As a statement of historical fact, his proposition was hardly controversial. But it was a radical break with the line taken by previous Canadian leaders, namely that their country was a happy fusion of indigenous peoples, Acadians, illegal immigrants etc. Still, it went down well with Canadians – not least those from ethnic minorities, who backed the Conservatives in unprecedented numbers yesterday.
Why did the Tories win? Because Canada is the only major economy to have come through the crash in good condition; because there has not been the surge in taxation, spending and borrowing that other nations have seen; because illicit migration has been brought under control; and because Canadians recognise that these things did not just happen on their own.

None the less, the Conservatives finally have their majority – and with it, the effective leadership of the English-speaking peoples. Stephen Harper is perhaps the most pro-British (and pro-American) leader in the world. In one of his first speeches as Prime Minister, he spoke movingly to a London audience about lucky his country was to have been founded in the British political tradition, and how the inherited folkright of common law was the basis of Canada’s freedom. As a statement of historical fact, his proposition was hardly controversial. But it was a radical break with the line taken by previous Canadian leaders, namely that their country was a happy fusion of indigenous peoples, Acadians, illegal immigrants etc. Still, it went down well with Canadians – not least those from ethnic minorities, who backed the Conservatives in unprecedented numbers yesterday.
Why did the Tories win? Because Canada is the only major economy to have come through the crash in good condition; because there has not been the surge in taxation, spending and borrowing that other nations have seen; because illicit migration has been brought under control; and because Canadians recognise that these things did not just happen on their own.
In a reversal of the recent past, Canada is now – relatively, at any rate – a fiscal model for Britain and America, as well as a more robust foreign policy player.”

Dear Prime Minister, I write to bring to your urgent attention to anti-Muslim politician Geert Wilders’ planned visit to Canada from May 8 – 10, 2011. Mr. Wilders, a member of parliament in the Netherlands, is slated to speak in various cities including Toronto, London and Ottawa. As you may be aware, Mr. Wilders is currently facing prosecution in the Netherlands for possible violations under Dutch anti-hate speech laws. Mr. Wilders is known internationally for holding anti-Muslim and xenophobic views. Wilders has described Islam as “an ideology of hate and violence.”i He claims “Islam is not a religion” and proposes that constitutional religious freedoms should not be extended to Muslims and Islam.ii He has called Islamic culture “retarded”iii and called for the elimination of Islamic schools in the Netherlands, which he describes a “fascist institutions.”iv Despite his claim that he is a free-speech advocate, Wilders has called for the Qur’an to be banned in the Netherlands and has referred to the Qur’an as a fascist book, comparable to Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf.v Wilders has also called for the “voluntary repatriation” of Muslims from Western countries and the end to the construction of mosques.vi

Hannan’s article is sickening. I may have lost respect for him. He says things that are flat-out untrue, like Harper not having ramped up spending and borrowing. It’s like he’s living in a different world.
