Election 2011: Anarchy In The UK

Here’s a nice surprise! The UK based Surly Beaver will be coming out of retirement in a few days.
Of course, as the blog isn’t yet out of retirement, I have noooooooo idea what-so-ever what Drew plans to blog about. You might bookmark it though.

That Indians drink as heavily as Irish people is something of an eye-opener, I must admit. I’ve spent many happy hours in the company of intoxicated Celts but none I’m sorry to say in the company of Indians.
After picking myself up from off the floor from laughing I have one comment: Looks like their might be something to this sight.
Having a Celtic background and having played hockey with some of my native friends I can confirm that the author is missing out and needs to expand his horizons.
    Looking forward to more.

  2. Last election night I recall there was an open blog post running. It worked out quite well and was enjoyed by the many who contributed to the discussion from all parts of the country.

  3. Surly Beaver, serving notice on our “loyal public servants” that their power has -limits-. I’ll take whatever little slice of freedom I can get, thank you very much.

  4. How frigging ridiculous is this law…? By 5:30 MT, we have a total of ~32 polls closed (10%). The vast majority — roughly 239 (78%) — close at 7:30 MT, with the remaining 12% in BC closing at 8:00 MT. So elections Canada is implying that 90% of the country will choose to vote strategically based on the preliminary votes of an isolated 10% of the country? Or that it would be possible for BC voters to somehow get reliable information in their *extra* 30 minutes to strategically change their vote?
I guess the big question is how the SCC could have decided that this was an “acceptable” infringement on free speech, given (a) how ridiculous the premise is, and (b) how easily it could be resolved through other methods like holding back results for a few hours?

  5. gee.
    lookit this.
over an hour into the middle of the day and still no smarmy ‘yawell yawell yawell the libs do it tooooooo’

Michael Ignatieff visited two Toronto editorial boards in recent days. Both visits resulted in reported accounts of Ignatieff acting odd and blustery. From the Globe & Mail report:
“He bristled when asked why he had come back to take up federal politics. ‘It’s my country,’ he replied, then paused. ‘It’s my home…. The Canada you dream of – dammit, this is the country I grew up in!” and he pounded the table.’”
.At the Toronto Star, meanwhile, he said that Conservatives “can go to hell.” He also blamed his problems on Tory attack ads and declared, in an oddly melodramatic flourish, “I have spent my whole life dealing with bullies. Some of them had guns” (though, as the National Post has reported, his memory of aforesaid bullies seems quite shaky).
“I don’t give these guys damn credit for anything,” the Liberal leader said, slamming his fist on the table. “I am not going to let other people frame me up … they can go to hell is what I have thought basically for two and a half years.”
.Today, the Globe endorsed the Tories. I’m betting the Star will endorse the NDP. I haven’t researched this point, but I am guessing that this is the first election in generations in which no major Toronto-based newspaper will be endorsing Canada’s “natural governing party.”
As a result, the Liberals are getting desperate. This hit home at 9am, when I got a mass-mailed Liberal email blast pleading for campaign donations. (“I need you to donate right now, so that we can air one last round of Liberal TV ads before Monday.”)
The weird part was the name in the “from” field: Jean Chrétien. (The subject line: “This is from the heart, Jon.”)
I actually count myself as someone who thinks Chrétien did a decent job as PM. He set Canada’s finances right, championed free trade, and passed the Clarity Act. But as Adscam and Shawinigate show, he was also — ethically — a dinosaur of a bygone age when power-brokers phoned the presidents of Crown agencies to get them to help get easy credit for their friends (then lied about it), millions of dollars sloshed around between government programs and the coffers of the Liberal party, and money was passed around in paper bags by Liberal apparatchiks.
The 2011 Ignatieff-era Liberals are going around pounding their fists on lecterns and editorial-board conference-room tables, telling us about the Tories’ abuse of power and lack of accountability — and yet when push comes to shove, they trot out this unapologetic icon of old-world backroom handshakes as their public face and fundraiser.
It’s only slightly less surreal than an email from Paul Martin telling me to “Stop dithering and support the Liberals,” or perhaps one from Alfonso Gagliano telling me to send money “if I know what’s good for me.”
