“The White House warned Republicans on Monday that failing to raise the $14.29 trillion US debt limit would spark ‘Armageddon-like’ consequences for the slowly recovering US economy.” Dig deeper:
“‘The consequences … of failure to raise the debt ceiling would be Armageddon-like in terms of the economy,’ said White House spokesman Jay Carney.”
When you’re drowning in debt, you need to borrow more – a lot more:
“Congress must raise the US debt limit, or the maximum amount the Treasury is allowed to borrow, by May 16 or see the United States default on interest payments of its debt…”
At his public school, Little Village Academy on Chicago’s West Side, students are not allowed to pack lunches from home. Unless they have a medical excuse, they must eat the food served in the cafeteria.

I would go to that school and join my child at lunch time and hand deliver a proper meal that I chose. I would inform her royal highness that if she confiscated my home baked breads, yogurt, muffins and hot meal in a thermos I would have her ass arrested for petty theft.

I was reading that article too, GL. On the second page a parent explains that parents who do not qualify for free or subsidized meals would be required to pay $2.25/day for the privileged of having the government force feed your child for you. Follow the money?
ChrisinMB, larben didn’t care for that video when it was posted last night
More of the same in jolly old:
“(Prime Minister) David Cameron branded Oxford University ‘disgraceful’ after claiming that the institution admitted only one black student in the last academic year. ”
(…)
“Senior officials at the university described the figure as ‘highly misleading’ as it related only to British students who described themselves as black Caribbean. They said Oxford admitted another 27 students who described themselves as black African and another 14 who were mixed race.
“The university also said that only 452 black students across the country had even achieved the A-level results demanded by Oxford to meet its minimum entry requirements for the 2009-10 academic year.
“Leading academics and MPs said Mr Cameron risked undermining the ancient institution with his ‘ignorant’, ‘absurd’ and ‘mind boggling’ comments. It followed controversy last week over Mr Cameron’s claim that Britain was responsible for many of the world’s historic problems, including the conflict in Kashmir between India and Pakistan.
“The latest fallout will add to growing controversy that the Coalition is attempting to ‘socially engineer’ university admissions by asking top institutions to set targets for recruiting students from state schools, poor backgrounds and ethnic minorities.”
(…)
“An Oxford spokesman said the university was ‘fully committed’ to admitting the most able students regardless of background. ‘The fact remains that there is a real issue around attainment in schools,’ she said.”

I came over to check out the comments on the main headlines of today. Mainly the AG’s report on the G8/G20 spending and the letter she sent critizing them for taking her praise of the previous Gov’t out of context. Why is everyone ignoring that?
The Razor’s Edge
by Victor Davis Hanson
I see California in terms now of the razor’s edge with disaster not far in either direction. A postmodern affluent lifestyle hangs in the balance here without a margin of error. http://pajamasmedia.com/
Les, did you miss the part where the AG said that the report is a draft only and subject to revision?
I saw the revision. The conservatives actually leaked it to the media this evening. The wording is not as harsh but it essentially says the same thing.
BTW, how do you copy and paste something the AG said about someone else and not know it?
The Conservatives released this February draft of the AG’s report this evening:
“In our view, by presenting the request for funding in this way the government was not transparent about its purpose. Parliament was not provided with a clear explanation of the nature of the approval being sought or that these expenditures would not be required to meet the pre-existing terms and conditions of the Border Infrastructure Fund…
We are concerned by the lack of documentation around the process for selecting projects for funding . Supporting documentation is important, in our view, to show that the selection process was transparent and provided a mechanism for accountability. When the Treasury Board approved Infrastructure Canada’s submission for the G8 infrastructure program, it stated that the Treasury Board Policy on Transfer Payments be respected . Under this policy there should be selection criteria because any expenditure of public funds should demonstrate transparency, accountability, and value for money.”
Either way, the report is not exactly complimentary.
This lefty family friend who’s been emailing me more or less daily (please may it stop after the election) sent me my favorite so far today, tagged “Silencing Dissent”. Turns out that “silencing dissent” involves cutting funding to various lefty pet-causes including, Gaia help us, the CHRC. Oh the humanity. (I emailed her back how I felt about that.)
These people are from another planet. Skim this, it’ll raise your blood pressure.
Were Bill Gates and Stephen Harper set up to fail?

Yes, I’m sure the official Conservative response was typed up by some staffer and no one in the Conservative party actually read it. That’s why they issued it to the media. I’m sure it was just an accidental cut and paste. Of course the Conservatives apologized immediately. After all, the AG’s interview that they copied it from was being aired. No way for them to hide a document this time.
One really has to wonder about the ethics of a Gov’t that would lie about what the Auditor General said. This Gov’t has lied about Canada’s
s financial position and lied and hidden information from the majority of Canada’s elected representatives. All this with only a minority Gov’t. And to think that the majority of the last century Canada has been ruled by Liberals and is rated as one of the best countries in the world to live.
So how many years as a majority do you think it will take the Harper Gov’t to actually destroy that?

That page at Policy Alternatives is a cynical attack on freedom of expression, not a defense of it.
Activist groups should not be government-funded, period. When they are, the freedom of expression of individual taxpayers who disagree with them is violated. The principle is that one should not have to utilize one’s own resources to fund ideas that one disagrees with. I might want to fund somebody else’s viewpoint instead of having my taxes go to fund leftist windbags.
When the groups are cut off from funding, the taxpayers’ rights are now respected. But any person who agrees with the Policy Alternatives standpoint should still be free to support the leftist windbags out of his own pocket, by right.
The flip side of the principle is that freedom of expression includes the right to use one’s resources to get a message that you agree with heard. This is why the six judges in the Harper case about the election gag law funding were appallingly wrong.
Section 2 of the Charter of Rights lists freedom of expression. But, since the Supreme Court is apparently unclear on the concept, the section should be changed to include both the fact that one has the right not to fund issues one disagrees with and that one has the right to fund ideas one agrees with to whatever extent one’s resources permit — both fundamental parts of the definition of freedom of expression.

OTTAWA – Sun News Network went West for its first major distribution deal with a cable or satellite television provider.
The upstart TV network, set to launch next week, announced that Shaw Communications Inc. will offer the news-and-talk television channel to all of its customers in Western Canada and Ontario for free when the channel debuts on April 18.
“The sun will be shining on Shaw,” said Peter Bissonnette, president of Calgary-based Shaw.
The deal with Shaw will put Sun News in two million more homes at the network’s launch. Shaw will make it available to all of its Shaw Direct and Shaw Cable customers for a free preview period which will run for six months.
“Shaw is a Western-based company and several of our on-air personalities are Western Canadians,” said Luc Lavoie, project spokesman for Sun News Network. “Just think of Charles Adler who became ‘king of talk radio’ in Canada. He is based in Western Canada. So is Corus, a component of the Shaw family of companies.
“We are very proud to say that Western Canadians will have access to Sun News starting on day one.”
Bissonnette said the addition of Sun News Network is one more compelling reason for Shaw’s customers to make the switch to its digital offering.

That’s wonderful. And if Canada had followed Harper’s advice when he was in opposition, how do you think we’d be doing?
Let’s pretend we did what Harper wanted and loosened up our banking rules and mortgage requirements. And followed the U.S. example.
Do you think we’d be doing as well? Why don’t you check out what Harper wanted to do and what he would have done if they were the Gov’t when all this going down? He was in total disagreement with the Liberals. Harper would not be here bragging about Canada’s financial position. In fact, they were bragging about Ireland a couple years ago. As a shining example of how huge corporate tax cuts is the way to go. Ireland is now bankrupt and can’t afford anything.

Shame as Navy seizes 17 armed Somalis, gives them halal meat and nicotine patches… then sets them free!
When a Royal Navy warship captured a crew of Somali pirates, it seemed like a rare chance to strike back at the ruthless sea gangsters.
The 17 outlaws were armed with an arsenal of AK 47s and rocket-propelled grenades, and had forced hostages on a hijacked fishing vessel to work as slaves for three months.
But instead of bringing them to justice, the British servicemen were ordered to provide the pirates halal meals, medical checks, cigarettes – and in one case even a nicotine patch – before releasing them in their own boats.
The extraordinary treatment – revealed in a Radio 4 documentary to be broadcast tonight – came at a time when Somali piracy is causing mayhem to shipping in the Indian Ocean.

CTV News website is pulling out all the stops in slamming the Tories. Here’s their front-page headlines:
-Conservatives hold single-digit lead ahead of debate
-Harper met ex-aide Carson’s lover at 24 Sussex party
-Draft report questions Conservative G8 spending
This won’t fit in the Lieberal Sign Generator but I thought it quite apropos going into tonight’s debate:
Michael Ignatieff says:
“We won’t just provide you a safety net,
we’ll give you a permanent hammock!
Oh sure, it’ll destroy your self esteem
but hey, it’ll make us feel good to help
all you peasants out there. And after all,
isn’t that what’s really most important!”
Unreal. On CTV they just interviewed a business owner whose store was damaged during the G8 summit, and the individual was concerned about compensation for the needed repairs. The reporter kept trying to steer the conversation back to the Auditor Generals report, saying – that as a voter and business owner – are you not upset that the Harper government wasted 50 million and will not pay him for his claim? He said that he just wanted his money, and then she again went back to the report, and said as a voter he should be quite upset with the wasting of money as shown in the report, and that Canadians should take this into account during the election.
What a load of total bullshit. Bring on Sun news, stat!
Sheila Fraser states. ” I strongly caution the public to wait until our final report on the G8 Legacy Infrastructure Fund has been tabled in Parliament and made public.”
I am hoping that in tonight’s epic battle between PMSH and the coalition Ghidora, the head named Mike brings this subject up. Mr. Harper may easily land the knockout punch that will have Mike waking up dazed and confused in a Harvard cloakroom.
PMSH simply has to ask Mike,or one of the other heads,if they respect the AG,and if this is how they would respect the AG if they were to win the election.Of course this scenario needs a little more fleshing out,but I do believe that it would be foolish to disregard Ms. Fraser’s statement.

“Read the IMF report that today praised Canada’s outlook. We’re doing VERY well, compared to most other countries.”
I enjoyed the penguin leap because of the Chariots of Fire background music. Me? I just love the eclectic music, every night.
This wasn’t music. sigh…. Lady in Red
Was that clip for real?
Don’t most kids in rural areas drive their dads’ tractors, trucks, and cars?
Granted, dad’s usually in the vehicle with them …

Five years later, Tories see their ethical advantage slip away”

Common sense spending cuts column by Thomas Sowell, doesn’t go far enough, but it’s a good start.
(I was just jerking your chain a little larben, no real offense intended)
Looks like Barry might of picked up the phone and called his US aunty:
“Yo, listen, you owe me one being you could stay in the US and all after I pulled some strings…You heard about that rich cracker, Trump from NY?…I need you to go and say that you remember seeing a letter in 1961, in Kenya from Hawaii…Saying I was born there…I need a sob story…I need some controlled anger”

Same type of phone call to the new Hawaiian Governor, Abercrombie?
“I personally witnessed Obama being born in the hospital…”
(Yeah right)
Just show us the paperwork…Trust but verify.
Now, the social security number issue is surfacing…In a newspaper ad:

The whole Barry Soetoro story is just incredible…Incredible that he made it so far…The ultimate flim-flam man using race as his ace in the deck…The joke is on the USA but it is far from laughing matter.
Justice under the US Constitution must be served eventually…Even after he has served if need be.
Iggy, “We knew they’d been spraying money around like drunken sailors….”
Dear Mike, speaking as someone who has BEEN a drunken sailor in over 50 ports, I can assure you that when we run out of money, we actually STOP spending, unlike a number of political parties I could mention.
Thanks,
Your friendly neighbourhood hairybag.

More than £60million was paid in ransoms last year and pirates currently hold 30 ships and nearly 800 hostages.”

We’d be back to the 65 cent dollar, a 24% inflation rate and gas at $1.87 a litre.
Is there any wonder dolton keeps getting back in? He is bought and paid for by unions and special interest groups.
The recent decision by the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association (OECTA) to increase its members’ dues by $60 to fund an anti-Progressive Conservative Party campaign during this fall’s provincial election has been rightly criticized by a number of groups and individuals. In fact, the OECTA decision is just the tip of the iceberg, and a reminder of how bad labour laws in Canada are at protecting individual workers from abuse at the hands of powerful mega-unions.
Basicaly the unions have taxed each teacher, that is forced to belong to the union by law, an additional 60 dollars each for the support of a political party that has been hand picked by the union for union thuggery interest. An offer theteachers can’t refuse…

CTV News website is pulling out all the stops in slamming the Tories. Here’s their front-page headlines:
-Conservatives hold single-digit lead ahead of debate
-Harper met ex-aide Carson’s lover at 24 Sussex party
-Draft report questions Conservative G8 spending
The link I posted earlier is up again. It really is worth watching for the entertainment value.
