The Sound Of Silencing Scientists

Via WUWT;

Dr. Tim Ball is widely recognized as one of Canada’s first qualified climate scientists and has long been one of the most prominent skeptics taking a stand on corruption and unethical practices. Two exponents of the global warming scare Ball has targeted, professors Michael Mann and Andrew Weaver, are now suing him for libel.
Many suspect the David Suzuki Foundation is funding Vancouver libel specialist, Roger D. McConchie who is representing both Weaver and Mann against Ball. Suzuki is reported as wanting skeptics like Ball “put in prison.”

Well, so much for Ball’s “Big Oil” funding – these actions put those lies to rest. SLAPP suits aren’t effective on targets with fat bank accounts.

1. rroe: “Johnson made allegations in his statement of defence to the suit brought by Ball. The allegations accept that Ball has a Doctorate in Climatology.”
From Johnson’s statement of defense, para 8: “The defendent specifically denies that [Ball’s] PhD was defined by Queen Mary College as a Doctor of Philosophy “in Climatology”.”
So unless your definition of “accept” is “specifically deny,” you may want to try re-reading the statement of defense a little more closely.
sylvanguy: “I was torn between donating to Dr Ball and the Suziekew Foundation, then I thought, wait a minute…Dr Ball is a career climatologist…”
Over the span of his entire career, Ball has neither published any peer-reviewed research papers on modern global warming, nor has he been cited by others in the relevant literature, nor has he specifically trained in the physics and mathematics of climate change science, nor has he supervised/mentored many graduate students in the field, nor has he ever been a member of relevant meteorological societies or geophysical unions, nor has he delivered many talks on climate change research to the relevant scientific community (at academic conferences, research symposia, etc.).
But hey, he’s superfically and uncritically presented here at SDA as a “career climatologist”, so that’s good enough, right?
Grant: “He goes on to attack Dr. Ball for offering opinion while he lacks those ‘required credentials’.”
No, in his Calgary Herald letter to the editor, Johnson specifically attacked Ball’s misrepresentation of his own academic and professional credentials (“Whatever one may feel about Tim Ball’s denial of climate change science, newspapers ought to report factual summaries of authors’ credentials…”).
“Do we now conclude, that Dr. Suzuki’s pronouncements on ‘Climate Change’ should be ignored by academia and policy makers?”
Ignored is the wrong word, but actually, yes, policy-makers should not rely on Suzuki’s statements to guide their decision-making, nor should academics take him too seriously in an academic setting. After all, Suzuki is a science broadcaster and (like Ball) an activist, not a researcher. What’s always puzzled me is why people on SDA think that by attacking Suzuki (or Gore), they’re somehow attacking climate change science itself.
That said, Suzuki’s overall position on global warming happens to be largely consistent with the majority of academic research and expert opinion on the matter, and it’s this latter pool of scholarly expertise that policy-makers should indeed be drawing upon.

To all reading this, please know that Robert W. is secretly in love with me.

2. Done. Long time lurker but couldn’t let this pass. $500.00 to start more if required.

3.
A doctor, a clergyman, and a lawyer are sitting in a slowly sinking rowboat in shark-infested waters within sight of a nearby island. The doctor and the clergyman attempt to swim ashore to get help but, to the horror of onlookers on the beach, are devoured by the sharks. The lawyer is not devoured but is actually assisted speedily to shore by two of the sleek man-eaters. When asked why it was that he was not devoured like his two companions, the lawyer replies: “Professional courtesy.” This joke has long maintained its popular place 1 on the hit parade of that subspecies of American humor – lawyer jokes – because it adds a certain piquancy to the popular perception of lawyers as predators on society, though it addresses none of the substance behind that perception.
The Ethics of representing a client like “Mann” that is not paying for that representation, may get a lawyer disbarred if he fails to produce the client for deposition. Mann made some interesting statements during his Penn State hearing…

4. I made a donation. We can’t allow the likes of that fraud Suzuki to silence a good man such as Tim Ball.

5. Where is the Govt of Sask on this issue; did not the Govt. of Sask under one Lorne Calvert, pay in part for, and give union workers time off to attend, the Big Kahuna of Snake Oil Sales, Al Gores speech in Regina. We must donate to Tim Ball, he is an honest decent man, and to have the likes of FRAUDSTER Suzuki hounding you is unreal.

6. Tim Ball is only “recognized” as a “climate scientist” by those lobotomized members of the cretinati who want legitimate climate science to go away.
Truth is he is neither recognized nor is he a climate scientist (he is a climate historian). His entire lifetime productionof climate related research amounts to four papers, none of which has a bearing on human-caused climate change.
