  1. Davenport – for a change, you’re right. Whether one should use “podiums” or follow the latin roots and use “podia” follows from whether one wishes to be seen as educated / erudite. I guess we see what Count Iggy is going for, and how well that expensive (but not expansive) education is doing him.

  2. Iggy is a cheap imitation of John Wayne looking for a pity f++k . The count is no duke .

  3. Umm If you’ve seen Eminem in 8 Mile you would know the outcome of a “mano e mano” debate b/w PMSH and Count Iggula.
Like a typical coward the MSM (CBC) wants to gang up on the PM.
They remind me of a crack head that I had to put down at a national hotel that will not be named.
It’s not the first punch that matters, it’s the last one, douche.

  4. Of course if this debate were to take place it would be televised on CBC with a commie CBC moderator who would let the Count talk-over and interrupt the PM while the PM would be a perfect gentleman and allow Ignatieff uninterrupted speech.
We’ve seen this sort of thing before many times.
Who could be picked to be an unbiased moderator in such a debate?

  5. Maybe Iggy’s afraid of an upcoming fair fight on TVO and wants a friendlier sideshow.

  6. this just in \
    CBC to host \
    moderator is George Alphabetsoupius
will start with 15to 20 George W. Bush jokes as an audience warmup

  7. Podiums, podia, whatever. MI should have used lecterns, no matter how many platforms there are.
Anyway, I don’t see why there’s so much talk about having a debate. When Harper wants to spend more money than we have and Ig wants to spend a lot more money than we have and Layton wants to spend more money than we’ll ever have and Duceppe wants, well who really knows or cares what he wants, what exactly is there to “debate”?
They can yap and posture all they want but broke is broke.

  8. Forget the podia. I would like to see PM Harper and MIA in separate sound proof rooms with timed mikes. Each would be given 2 minutes to make their point and then their mike would be shut off. Any extra words they would add wouldn’t get beyond their sound proof booths. That way they can’t talk over or interrupt each other. Of course the cameras would stay on and show MIA blowing a gasket as PM Harper performs a vivisection on MIA’s ideas which would make for truly great TV.

  9. This from wikipedia
“Michael Ignatieff is a historian, a fiction writer and public intellectual”
These are three traits that I definitely am not looking for in the Prime Minister of my country. I want someone who looks to the future not the past, tells the truth, not spews fiction and understands the reality of life, not a person intrenched in some fantasy about utopia.

  10. “Michael Ignatieff is a historian, a fiction writer and public intellectual”
So he writes his own speeches then.
Is there a difference between a public intellectual and a private intellectual?
I thought that to be a true intellectual one had to do some genuine truthful inner searching.
To my knowledge, Count Ignatieff hasn’t done that, publically or privately.

  11. ‘Who could be picked to be an unbiased moderator in such a debate?’
I would pick Ezra Levant as the moderator.
    harry

  12. “You, me — two podiums”.
Actually Ignatieff was misquoted — he meant to say, “You, me — a pedestal for me and podium for you”.
I think it would be a mistake for Harper to debate Iggy alone — not because I don’t think Harper could beat him (I think he would clean Iggy’s clock). But because Iggy does deserve to be raised to that level.

  13. Bruce at 12:57 PM, amazingly, the yes vote to that question stood at 47.63% just a second ago. Mind you, this is a CBC poll.

  14. Louise, note the wording of the question! Should the funding be scrapped–yes.

  15. Iggy was misquoted, he meant to say: “You, me — a pedestal and a podium; a pedestal for me a podium for you”.
Actually I think it would be a mistake for Harper to debate Iggy alone. Not because Harper would lose — I think Harper would whip his butt soundly. But because Iggy doesn’t deserve to be raised to that level and receive special attention — he’s been a rude disrespectful opponent his entire time in Parliament, interested more in scandal-mongering than legitimate legislative issues. Right from day one the arrogant Iggy stood up in Parliament and declared: “Mr. Harper, we are putting you on probation!”. Why, what had Harper done other than the fact that he got himself democratically elected? Iggy’s an ignorant slob who has never respected the office of Harper’s Prime-ministership from day one.
Here’s how Harper can seriously embarass Iggy in a debate: simply bring up every phoney tabloid scandal that the Liberals have whipped up — from “Harper torturing innocent farmers in Afghanistan” to “Harper pocketing the communion host at Catholic Mass” — to bring to the remembrance of the Canadian voter how the Libs have wasted taxpayer money and Parliament’s precious time over the past two years on silly vexatious accusations, costing tens of thousands of dollars in wasted Commissions and investigations.
In the end, the worst thing that they have demonstrated about Harper the “Hitler dictator” is one of his administrators used the wrong letterhead on a fundraising letter — OMG! It’s the holocaust!
So what ever happened to the commission investigating Harper for torture in Afghanistan, Iggy? Just as I thought — just another phoney Lib scandal to attempt to put the fascist Russian Count Iggy on a pedestal…
I could go on and on — for example the Bev Oda scandal was originally about Kairos and how it was channelling Canadian taxpayer money to people in the Mideast connected to terrorist groups. Iggy was mad that the terrorists got their Canadian money cut off, so he dug up a minor administrative scandal about Oda.

  16. This reminds me of Elmer Fudd singing “I’m too sexy” [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yc4hyi4ufG4]

  17. You, me and two podia. Or, if you don’t like real podiums, we can use pseudopodia

  18. I really want to come up with a good “Count of Monte Cristo” pun. I know it’s out there.

  19. Stephen will eat him raw, after all he is an economist and these are trying economic times.
Posted by: Oz at April 2, 2011 12:52 AM
C’mon, Oz. Keynes was a economist as is Paul Krugman. Former Fed chairman Alan Greenbacks wuz one, as is Burnyankee.
PLUS, he’s not an economist and never has been. He has a masters degree in economics but never performed the work of an economist (whatever that is!).

  20. I had thought that a “public intellectual” was someone who was regarded as an expert in the spending of public money, i.e., a socialist under a pumped-up term (anti-concept). You know the type — a wanker like John Ralston Saul. But apparently it’s just a thinker with a high public profile. Okay then.
Michael Ignatieff generally turns up in this category. Having read the opaque tangle of contradictory B. S. that is the five speeches comprising “The Rights Revolution”, I think the term is seriously misapplied.
    – – – – – – – – – –
By the way, I was joking about “podia”, but some people fell for it. Hah!

  21. He has a masters degree in economics but never performed the work of an economist (whatever that is!).
    ~Me No Dhimmi
Economists guide politicians, like oh say Preston Manning, on economic issues.

  22. “He has a masters degree in economics but never performed the work of an economist (whatever that is!).”
It’s sort of like a graduate doctor, who has never seen an operating room yet wants to give you a heart transplant, because he read it in a book.
