Now is the time at SDA when we juxtapose!
Feb. 26th, 2011 – Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has announced that a carbon tax will be implemented by July 2012 in Australia. This carbon tax will be an interim measure that will eventually transition into a cap-and-trade system.
March 26th, 2011 – Labor member of the upper house Luke Foley said the party had suffered “a massacre, a slaughter the likes of which none of us have seen”.

Some people believe that given that Australia’s economy makes up only 2 per cent of world GDP, this carbon tax will have no impact on global warming.
They’re correct, but mainly because there IS NO Global Warming.
This is true, but it ignores the fact that Australia doing this will give other countries an incentive to start their own carbon tax.
This is the, “If Johnny jumps off a bridge then you should jump off a bridge too.”, schoolyard mentality.
That’s how 2 World Wars happened.
If the tax is applied to mining or the export of energy then it will have a much greater impact because Australia is a major energy and resource exporter. If the price of Australian resources is higher then this will increase the world prices of resources, which will have a massive impact on global energy consumption.
Seriously, if the world uses less because of the price of a barrel of oil, OPEC will just produce more to bring the price down.

“The truth is the people of New South Wales have trusted us with government for 16 years. They did not leave us, we left them.”
~Labour
The right-leaning Liberal/National coalition needed only a 7.6 percent swing to win control of the country’s most populous state which takes in Sydney and the coal-mining town of Newcastle.
When you’re the Labour Party and you’ve lost the coal miners you know you’ve taken a trip on the dream ship ‘Utopia’.
I’m sure they’ll let our Liberals up here know how that works out for them.
The carrot top freudo-marxist feminist c#nt deserves what she gets.
There’s a lesson about coalitions in there perhaps canadians should be taking note of.
Did the Labor Party never wonder why, in the 14 years since Kyoto, no government in the world has attempted to make real effort to fight global warming, despite all the rhetoric?
Duh!
The front must have fallen off-

Guess we will see no revival of the Green Shift, eh?
I was just outside and it felt .000000000001 degrees colder, let’s hope they succeed in their noble task.
Dirtman, I don’t think the Labour Party, or any other party for that matter, cares much for actually fighting climate change. Rather, fighting climate change is a wonderfully nebulous concept that’s been shaped and crafted into a scheme intended to make people feel good about themselves for paying higher taxes. What the Labour Party is now most certainly wondering about is how they messed that up.
Marxists seem to have “caught the wrong wave” in Oz. Guess the Global Warming con
sales job wasn’t quite as bulletproof as they had managed to convince themselves.
Come on Iggy tell us about your Coalition and Carbon Tax plan.
You know you want to.

*TORedStar’s Barff Hour:
>>> “cool temperatures likely had many people using more heat than this time last year.”
“Toronto only sees 5 per cent power drop for Earth Hour”
“Is Toronto in the dark when it comes to Earth Hour?
Millions of people from 134 countries — from Delhi, India to Heidelberg, Germany — switched off their lights and televisions for the fifth annual Earth Hour on Saturday night to show their support for action on climate change.
But Toronto only saw a 5 per cent power drop during the event — half of the reduction achieved during Earth Hour in 2010.
The year before that, the city had a 15 per cent drop in megawatts being used.
“Honestly we still think it’s successful, we think it’s a great program,” said Jennifer Link, a spokeswoman for Toronto Hydro, who added that cool temperatures likely had many people using more heat than this time last year.”

Knight 99, Hear, hear. We’ll be shocked if the our media test Count Iggy on carbon taxes, knowing how quickly it sank their last ship.
Good on the Aussies – their neighbours’ Kiwigate might have opened a few eyes, but notice our lamestream media haven’t mentioned it – pfft.
Knight 99 @ 4:26
I believe that’s why Layton wanted the HST removed on heating fuel so he’d have room to put a carbon tax on it later under Iggys coalition. This coalition notion is far from dead and we should continually hammer away at it.
It still amazes me that so many politicians never received the memo that the global warming, climate change is dead, gone, was a fraud.
“If we cut emissions today, global temperatures are not likely to drop for about a thousand years.”

“The Labor government of Australia’s largest and most populous state is facing an epic defeat tomorrow after 16 years in power, following a string of scandals possibly unrivalled in the Western world.
Corruption, pornography, drugs, gay sex romps, marital infidelity – the government of New South Wales (NSW) has had them all, and more, in the past two years alone. Now long-suffering voters are determined to wreak revenge, and not even a photogenic premier related to a Booker prize-winning author will be enough to save Labor from its worst post-war electoral drubbing.
“It will be the political equivalent of a slasher movie, a bloody affair in which the bodies of sitting members pile up as NSW voters go on the rampage against a government which… has truly worn out its welcome,” predicted David Penberthy, editor of The Punch, a news website.”

Until the purveyors and promoters of this SCAM, are publicly ridiculed and charged for theft/fraud by polititians with BALLS the likes of Klaus, Farage, here in Canada, the Iggula’s and Laytons will continue to talk carbon tax. Thank god Harper got rid of the fairy princess Jim Dinning in environment, he was totally suckered by SCAM MAN Suzuki, and on board with all this garbage. It’s perspective people, you have to be pretty stupid, or a liberal, to not look out an airplane window and say, Damn this is a big big earth, I just don’t think us ants on this hill can eff it all up. Australians are starting to wake up, Canada must wake up, give Harper a majority so he can install more kick ass cabinet ministers, clean up the mess created by liberals and limp wristed Prentice types.
The already tired Liberal mantra of “jets, jails and corporate tax cuts” is what they want us to hear this election.
What we have to force them to talk about is “CC”- and I don’t mean Canadian Club rather it stands for Coalition and Carbon Tax.
Iggy is denying that a Coalition is in the works if Harper is re-elected with a minority. What is not being talked about is, should the Liberals lose the election, Iggy will resign. That leaves Boob Rae and so far I haven’t heard him swear off of the coalition conspiracy.
JDN @ 2:40 and Sgt Lejaune @ 3:40 nail it.
The Luddites and socialists have joined forces in an attempt to control human endeavor.
The Cons have not yet … or ever will … say that Climate Change/Global Warming is proven wrong.
I dare you to ask ANY politician of ALL parties, if Global Warming/Climate Change is true. You would hear answers like Biffy gave on Friday concerning the Coalition of Losers.
Try it with your candadate in a public debate (I am) and d not be surprised of their answer. Just ask a yes or no question … if any say that they do not believe the lies of Climate Change/Global Warming, it would be on the front page of ALL papers in Canada and the leader of that party will have damage control.
The enviroMENTALists still rule in this area.
Yet the party that DOES say that Climate Change/Global Warming is a big lie would get the vote of every reader of SDA and other like-minded Conservative blogs – and perhaps a few of the Coalition of Losers. It will take a lot of courage to astate the facts, but until they do Climate Change/Global Warming is well and alive in Canada.

JDN: “people feel good about themselves for paying higher taxes”
People have always been able to pay higher taxes; a tax bill is the minimum required amount. When the “feel good about paying higher taxes” crowd sends in more than they have to, they might have a leg to stand on when trying to force the rest of us to pay more.

>>> “Overconfidence is an inevitable result of neglecting indeterminacy and ignorance.”
“Reasoning About Climate Uncertainty – Draft

[…]
Conclusion: Translation: Climategate.
“Hence IPCC confidence levels determined based on the amount of evidence (number of sources of information) and the degree of agreement (consensus) among experts do not explicitly account for indeterminacy and ignorance, although recognized areas of ignorance are mentioned in some part of the report (e.g. the possibility of indirect solar effects in sect xxxx of the AR4 WG1 Report). Overconfidence is an inevitable result of neglecting indeterminacy and ignorance.”

Kathryn,
Exactly – one of my sisters of the NDP persuasion said she would happily pay more tax for more social programs, green energy, etc. I told her she was welcome to. In Ontario there is a line on the tax return to donate all/part of your refund
to the Ontario Opportunities Fund. It looks like it to be directed to the provincial debt.
Even without that line on the tax return, no level of government would ever refuse you sending them extra $$
So, go ahead, pay more tax if you want to put your money where your mouth is.
This somewhat restores my faith in the Aussies. I’ve been down there during two federal elections and it’s surprising how naive and dumbass they can be sometimes. Crocodile Dundee is a myth. Most Aussies are centre-left urban dwellers. Gillard could not even have been elected in Canada, which shares some of the same attitudes.
I suspect the global recession has sharpened everybody’s wits. Eco fantasies tend to fade when you’re worried about losing your job. Especially the carbon tax, which is a solution to a non-existent problem.
I have offended a friend. A somewhat misguided friend but generally a very decent person. First, I didn’t attend his annual Earth Hour party last night. Then, I changed my Facebook picture to Kate’s earlier Earth Hour Eco-Fascists logo and included a comment about celebrating the downfall of modern civilization. After that, I came across one of his Facebook posts that was idolizing Julia Gillard via a video link indicating her support of Earth Hour through carbon taxes and cap and trade (as above). So, never one to miss an opportunity to alienate someone, I posted a comment under his post that simply said “oh oh” and then the link to the second ‘Juxtapose’ story at the beginning of this thread.
He pulled is post – which deleted my comment – and ‘unfriended’ me. Can’t wait until the next time I see him! 🙂
Iggy March 26: “A Liberal government won’t wait for the US Congress to develop our policy. We will work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and advance carbon pricing through the kind of equitable cap-and-trade system already operating in Europe, and being pursued by BC, Ontario, Manitoba and Quebec. ”
Iggy May 2nd: “doh!”
