Random Thoughts On The Impending Federal Election

If I, a confirmed current events and political junkie, cannot summon interest in this topic at the moment, I cannot imagine the level of excitement it arouses in the general electorate.

Related thoughts from Mike, who emails – I can almost hear Stephen Harper saying….. “Don’t you dare throw me into this election.”

  1. There is an answer, Vote for someone more conservative than the CPC.
Yeah, split the vote so that the Bloc Coalition can win.
    FAIL.

  2. yep, vote for a tiny party more conservative than the CPC, the result of which would make the country veer even farther to the left…
    that helps us HOW
In a perfect world, yes, I’d vote CHP….but

  3. The secret to this election is fear, we need to remind people that there is a real possibility that Count Ignatief could become our PM and what a disaster that would be. The bumbling idiot south of the border would then have a genuine side kick.

  4. A boring election here while the rest of the world goes ever more wobbly.
Unsustainable sovereign in debt in Euroland – wait till they have to cut the immigrants off the generous welfare dole.
The middle east pots boiling over everywhere creating a huge vacuum for the jihadi whackjobs to fill.
Fiscal insanity, completeness madness in Obamaland and the big story on The View is about Barry’s birth certificate.
Imperialist China expanding its political, economic and military reach around the world.
No wonder our little election is small potatoes. Still very important, just that not interesting.

  5. I think Terry Tory and Adam pretty well have it right. As an old time Reformer I’m disgusted with Harper’s madcap deficit spending. I didn’t support the CPC in our recent by election (went CHP in protest) and won’t support them in the general unless they cut the vote subsidy.

  6. As I see it.
On one hand we have the “loyal” opposition. A party with a past history of failure and outright theft of taxpayers’ dollars led by an ineffective, artistocratic dufus completely out of touch with the average Canadian.
Another party with wild social schemes that would bankrupt the country under the leadership of an opportunistic phony who has proven, time and again, that he really doesn’t give a rat’s ass about those that he claims to represent. Layton got many of the items that he requested in the budget yet he chose to pull the trigger on an election.
The third element is a separatist party running candidates in only one province. Need I say more?
On the other hand we have the governing Conservatives. Although their leader is not the warm and fuzzy type flinging promises in all directions, he is, by all accounts, a descent man operating in very difficult circumstances. He has had to deal with a global economic debacle, an obstructive, power-mad opposition and a hostile media hell-bent on portraying him as a diabolical tyrant while, at the same time studiously ignoring the obvious shortcomings of his opponents. Yet, despite all this, Canada still fares very well in the world community.
A Conservative majority should be a done deal. Regardless of whether one likes another election or not, be sure to get out and vote when the time comes and lets put these opposition cretins out to pasture for a long, long time.

  7. I think the voting public should show their displeasure at this election by administring a good political spanking on the opposition in the form of a majority Conservative government.

  8. Dead ferret indeed. An unofficial observation of people in this neck of the woods is that the consensus feel this is a waste of money and time. The only folks giddy about it is the MSM, who are already out on the campaign trail.
I am already dreading the inevitable debates with a greenie woodchuck and a separatist blockhead trying to out shout each other about how only they can save Canada.

  9. A coalition of the Bloc communists, Layton / Mulcair closet communists and the socialist Ignatieff Liberals would finish Canada off as a capitalist embracing country.
While CHP attracts conservatives, it simply siphons off votes from the Harper brand of conservatism.
With any good fortune the Duceppe /Layton communists will suck enough Lib votes from Iggy for Harper to form a majority conservative government.
The commie coalition would be utter disaster for Canada.

That’s exactly, how then NDP, Boob Rae got into Ontario’s top spot and by a short time afterwards you could not find a soul who voted for him. We are failed constantly by not learning from apst mistakes. A majority CPC government not a coalition of fools please.

  11. Rose: “My Liberal Husband commented this morning that it won’t be a 300 million dollar election, it’s a 300 million dollar liberal leadership campaign on our dime. That sums up what’s happening nicely.”
I hope, Rose, that that means your husband is going to vote Conservative!
This is all about the Liberal$ changing leaders (Bob Rae will no longer be lurking stage left) and the losers’ “coalition,” including one who doesn’t even appreciate being Canadian and would like to break up the country.
This whole election thing stinks to high heaven. The Liberal$ may rue the day when they decided to make this election about “ethics.” Although there might have been a few lapses in the ethics department, the CPC are head and shoulders above the LPC which constantly “operates within a culture of corruption” (Justice Gomery).
(‘Interesting article on Nigel Wright, PM Harper’s Chief of Staff, in the latest issue of The Walrus: “Mr. Right” by Michael Posner.
    http://www.walrusmagazine.com/articles/2011.04-politics-mister-right/
Apparently, Wright’s ethics can’t be questioned, they’re so impeccable and intact — and that’s according to everybody, on all sides of the aisle. I’m thinking that if the CPC were as “unethical” as the Three Stooges and their backroom hangers on are alleging, he wouldn’t have anything to do with them.)

  12. Late to the party but I also agree that the only reason for an election is so the coalition can be implemented. I also agree that that would be disastrous.

  13. When I go to the polls this time I am going to spoil my ballot. When PMSH said that Canada would accept Omar Kahdr back as a prisoner I told my Conservative MP that I could not vote for him.
I won’t vote for anyone else but I can register my protest by marking “NO TO KAHDR!”

  14. The outcome of this federal election will have a major impact on the Alberta PC leadership convention and subsequent provincial election. If the Marxist Bloc/Lib/NDP coalitionistas are successful, Alberta will build firewalls so fast, it will make the heads of the Ottawa crowd spin.

  15. People, people calm yourselves…
3 elections in 5 years think about it, its not about you its about THEM
    LADIES & GENTLEMEN
Please join us in the Parliamentary Dining Room:
    the TAXPAYER is served!!
Would you like the gravy boat with that or the GRAVY TRAIN!!
Oh I suspect the electorate will be mighty ticked

  16. People don’t want an election because in truth the Conservatives are doing a reasonably good job.
That said, things like the dreadful human right’s commissions can only be dealt with if the Conservatives get a majority.
I also think that the Count is getting restless. He assumed that after being parachuted in it would only be a short while before he was Prime Minister. Now he has discovered it is actually going to take some work, and I think he wants to go back to Harvard or some such place. So he is looking for an exit, and an election in which the Liberals do not get a majority, which they surely will not, will serve that purpose.

  17. Question: If Iggy, Jack & Gilles are prepared to form a coalition if an election doesn’t deliver a Harper majority, what’s to stop them from doing it this weekend after the non-confidence vote and instead of the election?

  18. *
    never underestimate those wiley progressives.

obviously has a finger on the pulse of the seniors community in her riding.
i think she’s counting on alzheimers.

  19. Time for the Conservatives to come out with a commercial damning the “hidden agenda” of the coalition of thieves with commies and separatists.
Shine a light on the cost of the election and the way it pays these money grubbing duplicitous saboteurs every time we go to the polls.
Explain the benefits of a smaller government and less taxes.
    Worked for Rob Ford.
Show the footage of Jack Layton pushing the girl in the bar and Count Eyebrow with his shirt tucked into his under-ginchies and quote what his own brother said about him.
Ignore and mock the inbred socialist media of Ottawa/Toronto Trudeaupian stiffs.
The conservatives have to run on a platform of “Don’t give us another minority” The last one has cost you a billion and nothing gets done. More political correctness, bigger gun registry, higher taxes, less freedom, bigger energy bills, more red tape, higher unemployment, bigger government, higher crime, more undesirable refugees, theft and waste doesn’t serve anybody but the statist pricks forcing this unwanted election on us all.
    Majority or Greece.

  20. “dead ferret that just dropped in their laps”
I was struggling to find the words but you’ve got them there.
    *************
No. “dead SKUNK that just…” etc.

  21. Elections, what elections? ah..that’s coming from Ottawa – totally different galaxy.

  22. Well if I was PM Harper and if there is a leaders debate , I would only ask one question of both Iggy and Layton … “Will you categorically state for the record that you , Iggy or Layton , will not form or attempt to form a coalition with the Bloc if there is a minority election out come?”
… and regardlles what other questions are posed , I would keep repeating that question and refuse to answer any questions until that one is unambiguously answered.

  23. Question: If Iggy, Jack & Gilles are prepared to form a coalition if an election doesn’t deliver a Harper majority, what’s to stop them from doing it this weekend after the non-confidence vote and instead of the election?
    ~JCP
It’s already been done for this election cycle and ruled out as an alternative to the CPC governing by the GG, that’s what’s stopping them.
They need another election of they’ll be acting with impertinence to the Crown.

  24. Kate, I am soooo happy you’re back! Your guest bloggers are good, but I feel better when you’re behind the wheel.
The next election (if we have one) will be between gun control or NO gun control. Simple choice.

  25. Maybe the disloyal opposition wants an election to spite Stephen Harper for having an invitation to the Royal Wedding on 29 April? After all, the three amigos were not invited – their wives won’t get to dress up and wear big hats; Hell hath no fury, etc…

  26. The world’s puppet masters have placed Obama in the White House successfully…They are still working on placing Iggy at 24 Sussex.
    Remember the Tory ad:
“Ignatieff, he didn’t come back for you”
Barry & Iggy, what neighbors that would be.

  27. Although we do not yet know for sure, it does appear as though they are going to bring down the government. I confess the idea of why is a mystery to me. I thought the Libersls learned their lesson the hard way with the polls shooting up to something like 43% for the CPC in the weeks following the last attempted coalition.
The only way a coalition could work in the Liberals favour is if a new Parliament were structured in such a way that the combined Liberal and NDP seats amounted to a majority. I think the probability of that happening is very less than the probability of a CPC majority.
Short of that unlikely scenario, the “hidden agenda Coalition” would need to rely upon the Bloc. If they were to enter that coalition, the Liberals would be soon forced into a situation where they would have to choose between Canada and Quebec. If they chose to keep the game going for four or five years by choosing Quebec, one could argue that the Liberal Party would not exist in even its current weakened state at the end of that time. If they chose to consider the future of their own party, the coalition would dissolve and there would either be another election or another CPC minority government.
So one wonders: exactly who is advising Ignatieff?
The idea of presenting the bill of a Liberal leadership campaign to the electorate does make for humorous blog comments, but I think there is a little more to it. Ignatieff could simply resign if there is no “hidden agenda Coalition” idea and he really does not like being the Opposition Leader.
Whereas there is always the unlikely possibility that Ignatieff and the Liberals “know” something the rest of us do not, the two most likely possibilities for Ignatieff’s comments are:
    1) the “hidden agenda Coalition” or
    2) Ignatieff is making a bad political decision.

  28. Beware the machinations of the coalition partners and the parliamentary kangaroo committees.
As much as the CPC appears to have lost much of its zeal for reform, most of it due its minority status, some of it due former progressive conservatives in its ranks, it is still the best option for libertarian conservatives to support.
If we had the luxury, such s Alberta does, of having enough support to have two right-wing parties it would be different and those who wanted to could support the CHP.

  29. “I am already dreading the inevitable debates with a greenie woodchuck and a separatist blockhead trying to out shout each other about how only they can save Canada.”
I refuse to watch the debates TC.
My political analysis is this: the Conservatives must convince Canadians that a vote for the Liberal Party is a vote for the Coalition. Then, the burden falls on the so called Blue Liberals, who must no doubt feel alienated by the hard Leftward anti-growth/ anti-liberty agenda. It stands to reason that there are still a ishtload of Liberals hanging-in there who do not identify with the socialists. So here’s the crux, has Harper convinced these Blue Liberals that he will not assail the two untouchable Canadian institutions? Has Harper convinced the Blue Liberals that he’s not intent on assailing the Canadian Healthcare system or the Abortion Rights of Canadian women?
Regarding Alberta: I’ve commented before that I believe the WRA has been keeping their options open waiting for the Federal deal to unfold. I strongly believe that a Liberal government intent on doing harm to western Canada is eminent. The PC’s reaction to such an event will create ample opportunity for the WRA to tee-up and swing big.
Very interesting times. I hope PMSH gets his majority as I believe that he is the premier politician, who’s leader, in the world. We as Canadians would be truly foolish to lose such a gem. Good luck Mr. Harper, you’re welcome back home anytime.
BTW, all of this Alberta talk has me wondering about Mr. Day. Prime Minister might not have been in the cards, but what about President?

  30. The liberals campaign slogan is this: We want to restore democracy, yet Iffy won’t tell us what kind of coalition agreement he’s made with the bloc. Is said coalition founded on the the same legal document they all signed last time giving the bloc full veto? Second in a democracy our elected officials don’t collude in back allies forming unethical coalitions against our backs. Some democracy there Iffy, real Russia TZAR stuff Iffy.

Better still “we want to retore democracy and as such will duly elect a new leader on our own dime unlike the last leadership change”

Better still “we want to restore democracy and as such will duly elect a new leader on our own dime. This unlike the last leadership change”

  33. I think the chances of that so-called ‘Red Door’ fading to ‘Post-Election Pink’ are very high. I’m hoping that the majority of voters are as alarmed by that possibility as I am and will decide the ‘Blue Door’ is the better choice.

  34. “The average Canadian is sick of the dog and pony show that is parliament and Canadian Federal Politics in general. Do we really need a third election in less than five years to return the same results we saw in 2006 and 2008?”
Now, if just a small percentage of you would simply apply the same anger you did over the Sponsorship Scandal to the nigh-weekly Conservative attempts to undermine democracy in this country, we might actually be able to avoid yet another minority conservative gov, and further elections like this one.

  35. Its like this,
it can be said that elections are like going to the bathroom.
You can ignore them and bad things will happe, guaranteed.
You may not like it, may not want it, though when you gotta go, you gotta go.

  36. I don’t know why so many are so blithe about this election.
The opposition did not call this arbitrarily. This has been in the works for some time, and I think the fake Oda scandal was the first act to allow the opposition the high moral dudgeon to force an election.
The media are fully on board. They have been since the last failed coalition attempt. The backlash to that seditious stunt forced the GG back from approving the installation of the opposition.
So the media then went to work to set the table for the next time – which is now – by validating the coalition as Constitutional (technically maybe but not in spirit), and mainstreaming it as an entirely normal outcome to another minority government.
That is what the opposition is playing for. The opposition does not need to win anything. They just need the Conservatives to get less than 155 seats.
If that happens we will see a coalition, and we will see the GG approve it.
And we will become a Banana Republic overnight, with the opposition awarding themselves the keys to the treasury.
For any who think that you will have the opportunity to vote the bastards out, my question to you is when?
You won’t see an election for 5 years, and there will be no way to stop the coalition from enacting whatever legislation they see fit – and it wont matter how mad Canadians get about it, they will have no ability to remove them from power. None.
And in 5 years time, the coalition will simply pass a law that says there will be no election.
This is an attempt to steal a country, period.

  37. Oh give me a break John, the sponsorship scandal has yet to be totally exposed, and comparing the word NOT and a Holy Waffer to the the theft of nearly 400 million dollars exposes the assinine loopy logic of liberal voters.
Yea Fig the libs want the taxpayer to fund their 300 million dollar Leadership Race.

  38. Remember the Liberals “Green Shift” to stop glowball warming? Well apparently it works, I can’t remember such a dick of a winter. Just remember people, this Count Dorkula will do anything for power for the sake of power only, he cares not a second for the long term properity of Canada like Harper does. Where are his children, for that matter where are Lenin/Laytons? We never see anything from these mad coalitionistsas about the future being a better place for the next generation, all we see is Harpers bad. Well Canada needs to start thinking about the future, and it lies not with Iggula and Baby Vladamir. We are the envy of the world under Harper, remember the 62 cent dollar under “da proof is da proof, and if you gotta good proof then it is a proven proof, dat is proof that,,,Oh god I can’t take it anymore, Over.

  39. “So one wonders: exactly who is advising Ignatieff?”
StIffy and his predecessor are/were simply out-witted by the more savvy Jack & Gilles. StIffy’s going through all of the trouble of “fetching the water” while Jack & Gilles eagerly wait for stIffy to “tumble down” and break “his crown”. But instead of “tumbling”, Jack & Gilles ‘roll’ Stiffy for the bottle.

  40. John apparently had no problem with da little guy from Shawinigan having four elections in seven years and that while having a majority for most of them.

  41. Here is a thought for all you constitutional experts, just a hypothetical:
Suppose Harper is ready to exit this ‘game’ of politics against the opposition, as the PM he can only advise the GG, so he goes to the GG and advises that he no longer holds the confidence of parliament and to avoid the expense of another election he “advises” that the GG ask the opposition “if they can form a government”. Notwithstanding that the opposition already formed a coalition before being requested (which could be inferred as treason), the opposition answers yes. So theoretically Harper dusts his shoes off and rides of to bigger and better things and leaves Canada with the Coalition. With the Bloc demanding more for Quebec, the NDP’ers demanding more for the poor and more taxes for the rich and corporations, and the Liberals demanding more for the CBC, universities, health care etc, etc, etc., how soon before the country implodes.
Just a hypothetical but after running the longest minority government in Canadian history, (to my knowledge) could anyone blame Harper for taking a walk. The manufactured scandals and the constant barrage of half truths from the MSM would have made many lesser men walk a long time ago.

  42. What can one say,
Like Rutherford said on Wednesday, the Conservatives are Liberals light at best. If that is what one has to work with, what do you do?
You plug yer ears so the bloviators can hurt them.
You close yer eyes to avoid looking at the charlatans.
You hold yer nose, to avoid the stench of what comes out of the politician’s mouths.
On the Election Day, you go and put yer mark down for the least offensive dirt bag.
Other than that, Ignatieff ‘s Wednesday speech was something to behold. It is typical of socialists/fascists and other such ‘ists to talk a lot, really fast and say nothing. As the saying goes, “the wise will ignore it and the stupid will think, that is the way it’s supposed to be”. He was also lying through his teeth when he said there will be no coalition.
The would be Lenin, would really, really like to be in the cabinet of the government of Canada. He would be positively orgasmic. He would sell his soul to the devil for a piece of government.
Conservatives are, for many people a default vote, just slightly better then the rest of bad crowd.
Socialists, communists and other such will vote for NDP, its strictly ideological since in real world NDP is not going to be even an opposition.
Freeloaders, those with hands stretched out as far as its possible, and those for whose the government is their day bread, will vote the socialist light, non-liberal Liberals.
Conservatives, liberal person (has nothing to do what so ever with the Liberal party) like your agent will vote Conservatives by default, due to lack of better alternative.

  43. I think a fairly substantial number of the electorate will vote for a guy who can play piano & sing beatles songs.

  44. JOIN THE CANADIAN TEAPARTY AS WE SHOW “CONTEMPT OF PARLIAMENT” AND THROW IGGY AND HIS CORRUPT ANTI-DEMOCRATIC FASCIST COUP OFF THE BOAT AND INTO THE OTTAWA RIVER!!!

  45. I remember watching Elizabeth Taylor in “National Velvet” when she was barely a teenager or maybe younger. She is now gone so I likely will be before too long also. That could make this my last federal election which I am looking forward to as much as I enjoyed her performances. We lifelong small c conservatives will have to muster our best resources to push Harper and his party over the majority threshold or else Canada will be driven into steep decline.

  46. I LOVE it when communists accuse Harper of “undermining democracy”. I think that is SO funny, and I don’t know why! Maybe because he has an 11-point lead over the Trudeau socialists.
