One of the largest earthquakes ever recorded slammed Japan’s eastern coast Friday, triggering a devastating tsunami. The quake was followed by more than 20 aftershocks that lasted for hours, most of them of more than magnitude 6.0

  1. Nice, Tex. I suppose next time the US gets hit, you’ll be screaming “REMEMBER 1812!”.
    It’s this kind of stupidity that is the biggest impediment to our improvement, as a species.

    I agree of course, and the principle is the same for just regular waves. Popular surfer waves occur where that power is concentrated by the factors you mentions.
    The only difference with a tsunami is it isn’t regular, much more powerful, caused by unusual geo-aquatic changes (e.g. undersea earthquakes). Same could be said for tidal waves and rogue waves.
    Anyway, my original point was I think we are over-reacting. Maybe I’m wrong but I’m still not convinced. Seems to me that nobody really gave rat’s behind about tsunamis forming from such a distance until all the press hype about that last tsunami in Indonesia…

  6. Interesting to look at the pattern of smaller quakes that occurred in and near the epi-center of the large quake in the 4 or so preceding days. Hawaii, and to a much lesser degree Kamchatka, Russia appear to be following a similar pattern.

    On Friday 12:30 am PST time, the Japanese live news feed was already reporting on the nuclear power plant problem and by 3:00 am PST had issued evacuation order for a 3 km area around the plant. The west has been very slow to report on this development.

    I knew this report was stupidity the instant I heard it.
    All of these people are idiots. The coolant for a boiling water reactor is de-ionized water. Not heavy water or anything else rare. Why would the US ship water to Japan? And how are they supposed to get a couple of thousands of tons there within a couple of hours? “Beam me up Scotty” time?
    What we now know is that not only is she an idiot, but the officials who are supposed to brief her are idiots as well.
    The emergency core cooling systems in ALL reactors including CANDUs use light water for emergency coolant.

  14. I am currently in the middle of the pacific (Borneo), didn’t see a ripple larger than normal last night.
    I wonder if the Japan aid is going to match the Haiti hysteria………………

  15. Knight 99, I’m sure whatever aid is offered to Japan will be put to good use. Also, the Japanese tend to be not madmen like the Pakistanis who refuse polio vaccinations or have roving rape gangs as was seen in Haiti.
    Call that mean if one likes but it was reported in the news.

    My speculation was that I doubt Japan will see the gushing of emotion from the MSM, Govn’t officials, the left, etcetera that Haiti received. We’ll see I suppose.

  20. Hate to stick up for Beagle, but the biggest weave ever recorded clocked in at over 1700 feet, and it hit in Alaska. Can’t remember the exact details, but you can google it if you feel inclined.
