Hear hear chutzpahticular.
I wonder if Black Mamba and others will chastise me for saying a few negative things about Layton, Suzuki, and Gore when they come to the end of their days. Note to self: stay dead quiet when those three stooges pass away in case you might upset someone. A moment of silence please…
Phantom: In every group there emerges a leader. Your comments strike a chord with me. Thanks for your common sense and compassion.
Be really, really careful not to say what you think.
On the whole…very disappointing.
In defense of me, I answer my emails.
I think we have to distinguish between those who sincerely disagree with us and those who cynically advance an idea out of greed or a desire for power. Unless we have proof of the latter, we owe it to our opponents to assume that they are sincere. After all, do we not demand that others concede our own sincerity, and are we not offended when they assure us that our views are motivated simply by greed, callousness, or stupidity?
Regarding so-called “stupidity”, I do not believe a person’s place on the political spectrum is determined by intelligence. Simple questions like “Am I my brother’s keeper?” cannot be resolved by intellect alone. Your answer will depend on how you feel about people in general, and in many cases we will use our intellect to simply rationalize a leaning to which we are already predisposed. That is not to say that some political choices aren’t better than others, but it does mean that our evaluation of those choices is influenced by emotion. An awareness of that fact ought to temper our behavior and make us less inclined to dismiss our opponents as fools.
I’m unbiased in this online debate as I never heard of the guy. Perhaps Kate linked to an article of his at some point but I don’t recall the name. One of the things that concerns me is people assuming that what a person happens to think about a particular topic at a particular time totally defines them. This invalid assignment operation was what Korzybski was trying to expunge when he created English prime (E’) in which the word “is”, and all similar words which create direct equivalency, were removed from E’. (The semantic equivalent of GOTOless programming).
There are very few people the news of whose death would want to make me celebrate. Turdeau was one of them and I didn’t realize that liquor stores were open on sundays in Canmore as I never gave the occasion the celebration it deserved — just had my tiny travel flask of tequila with me.
So let’s leave the primitive assumption that ones expressed ideas totally define a person with the leftists. Agree with you on this one Phantom.
Hey, why am I the bad guy? Phantom started it. Yell at Phantom! Throw things at Phantom! Anyway, say what you want, I’m not your mother. My comments were general; I wasn’t singling anybody out. I just choose to save my vitriol for the likes of Kennedy and Kim Jong-il.
I’d never even heard of the guy. If the lefty media (but I repeat myself) starts in on some nauseating hagiology (hagiography?) of him then have at it with my blessing. I’d rather talk about Jane Russell anyway.
In offense of you…what’s so important about e-mails?
Korzybski sounds rather Clintonian.
syncrodox: “what’s so important about e-mails?”
I don’t know. Some at the top of the thread thought this was Jimbo’s most outstanding attribute. I just want to be loved as much as this Saint of a man.
Oh Jeebus…not the Korzybslintonian doctrine…
“Not showing up to riot is a failed Conservative policy”…
How long is it going to take for some of you folks to realize that the policy of “kindness” that you keep espousing is the very thing that the liberal parasites are using against you in order to advance their agenda? Save your kind words for someone who didn’t overtly try to entirely eff-up your lives…
Say goodnight Dick.
Man-up syncro… Start putting these buggers in their place…
Especially on occasions such as this, it is important to not equate the misdeeds with the human being. Rest in peace.
In some cases such as PET, to respect the man is contrary to his own example of placing no value on a western Canadian as compared to an eastern Canadian (preeminently himself).
Richard
I chose to believe that well meaning and productive people will always build their own place.

That truck treating you right in this frozen fun?
Syncro, couldn’t have handled the unprecedented blowing snow and cold without the truck.
Like your “Korzybslintonian doctrine” comment/juxtapose. Clinton is more than just wearing his prevarication centered on “is.” It is the very fabric of what Clinton is.
Richard: Not pissing on someones grave is not the same as planting flowers around it.
If making me write letters to the editor to challenge the absurdity of what he last wrote is an art, Travers was a genius. RIP anyway.
Jim Travers was a good journalist and a good man. I am disgusted by the mouth breathers who post the sort of hateful drivel I’ve read here. I am on the right and privileged to have friends from across the political spectrum. I’m also privileged to have friends in the media. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that only the stupid would let political differences get in the way of a friendship, even a potential friendship.

In other news, Seagrams will shutdown four of it’s whiskey vats…
Sorry…I have no use for a seemingly very intelligent man who decided to push an ideology for personal gain only. Unlike a nobody writing on a blog like myself, Jim Travers had a column in the biggest paper in the nation and had lots of TV exposure. In my world, this requires some honesty for such responsability.
No matter what he wrote or commented with his pals on CBC where he was seen the most, even when as you read his columns and he once an awhile he’d stroke a positive note, he never allowed his column to end without at least a couple of smack downs to his victims.
The right/Conservatives never won in his writings and very rarely tied the debate.
Jim Travers was a very smart and educated, seasoned journalist. The same as Rex Murphy and Andrew Coyne who are also both CBC regulars.
Murphy and Coyne are at least fair and yes they slightly lean right but they will criticize the right when it’s warranted; not by default like Jimbo did constantly.
Jim Travers was agenda driven for personal gain just like David Suzuki is now. Honesty be damned.
My condolences to the Travers family.
Although I disagreed with pretty much everything Jim Travers had to say…I thank god we both live in a country we are still (for the moment)free to voice our differing opinions. There is no doubt that he stood up for what he believed in. It’s going to be tough to fill his shoes…RIP.
I didn’t know he was. I believe the point of “respecting the freshly dead” is to give room to those who need to mourn him. Mourning is a process to allow people to reconfigure themselves emotional, to be able to live on without the emotional dependence they have for the deceased.
I am not sure people on this forum need much space to mourn Jim Travers from what I can discern. It does seem to me, however, that harsh public criticism of him could wait a few days.
Mississauga Matt…
How did you do that
I am sure he will be missed by his family.

I luv your dry sense of humour Grey Lady.
scott @10:05 – check out the URL – the “http://etc.” – at Matt’s link. You can substitute any words for “jim+travers” and do your own.
Mr. Travers in the 90’s was the editor of the Ottawa daily – The Citizen. I refused to buy the paper. Then a Mr. Conrad Black bought the chain which included The Citizen. A new editor was hired and I became a subcriber. When Mr. Black sold the chain, to the Aspers, it regressed to its former editorial stance and I cancelled. Regrettably I do not watch the CBC nor read the Star, so I avoided Mr. Travers.
Mississauga Matt,
I never heard of the guy either, but that Let Me Google that for you link was the high point of the internet for me today.
“I am disgusted by the mouth breathers who post the sort of hateful drivel I’ve read here.”
Found next to irony in the dictionary.
Wow, has SDA suddenly become a member of the Westboro Baptists in the U.S.? (The cruel nincumpoops who protest at funerals).
Not that Travers wasn’t a cruel and totally biased individual himself in his news career, but it’s totally inappropriate to comment on it at this time. (Whoops! I just did it too).
BTW, contrary to popular belief the outrageous Westboro Baptists ARE NOT right-wing conservative fanatics (a falsehood someone like Travers would probably propagate in the Toronto Star) — they are in fact a Lefty church, supporters of the Democrats, and their leader Rev. Phelps campaigned for — get this — Al Gore! (There are photos of the two of them together on the Gore campaign a few years back).
I think Westboro attacks Gay funerals, dead Marines, et cetera as a provocation — in order to provoke a persecution backlash against “right-wing Christians” and attempt to squelch their free speech rights. And sometimes it works — because most people don’t know that the Westboro bigots are in fact a bunch of Lefties. Thankfully, eight out of nine of the U.S. Supreme Court probably saw through that ruse last week when they ruled in favour of supporting free speech rights — even at funerals.
I still think the Westboro bigot/provocateurs should be arrested for “disturbing the peace” though…
Black Mamba said: “Hey, why am I the bad guy? Phantom started it. Yell at Phantom! Throw things at Phantom!”
No way, throw them at Mamba. She’s the one you want! 🙂
(Things oncoming…!) It’ll have to be Black Mamba, ’cause Phantoms are impossible to hit!)
Kate, this is irony. Right? Jim Travers, God bless his soul, the archetypal Torontonian (living in Ottawa) defended state health care and died at it’s altar — the botched publicly delivered medical procedure. Is that what happened? Is that the point you want to make? You wouldn’t just bait us, would you?
O.K., so you would!
No no no no no. Phantom’s the selfish SOB who called for restraint and decency. Get ‘im, boys!

No, they’re not Christians, Baptist or any other sort, Ricardo.
