  1. Count me in as one of those who had vigourous debates through email with Jim Travers.
I liked him a lot for that.
It’s very sad to hear he’s gone.
To those who did not like his column and want to write rude things on his passing, I say get yourself a heart.
You may not have liked his opinions, but Columns are supposed to be opinion.
He was hard on the Harper gov’t from day one, true.
But I didn’t fault the man for having his opinions, I fault the papers and TV networks for having far too many people employed with the same set of opinions, and nowhere near enough balance.
Jim Travers was very decent to correspond with average Canadian citizens.
Some (most) of them cannot be bothered.
I know the family will be in grief. My heart goes out to them.
Should they come across this corner of the net, they will see that Jim Travers had email friends from across the whole political spectrum.

  2. The problem is that you show unconditional kindness to your to those on the left… The cure is making them understand that they’re retards…

  3. Why is everyone raving about this man? I always found his columns to be so far from the truth that I could barely get through them.
His columns appeared in our local newspaper, which is one of the reasons I stopped subscribing to said paper.

  4. Well, many mixed feelings on Mr Traver’s untimely death which says if nothing else that the man was relevant…which is all any of us could hope for in the final analysis.
As for fairness in life….well gosh Ms Malick: what do YOU think?

  5. @ Richard…that didn’t come out right did it?
@ Jim…I despised the man’s politics but had some respect for his writing style and seemingly half pissed panel persona.
For those who cared personally, sad about your loss.

  6. I am really surprised by some of the comments here.
Why is it that the moment someone passes away they immediately go from being an idiot to a saint?

  7. Guys, enough with the crass comments. Would any of you say that if the man’s family was in the room? He has a wife and two children I believe. Keep some decency, and if you don’t respect him at least respect yourself by not making comments that reflect poorly on your moral fibre.
Rest in Peace Jim, I’ll be praying for you and your family tonight. Thank you for your service and your convictions.

  8. Wait, he was a baby boomer. Shouldn’t the headline say “another one bites the dust”?

  9. Well, TJ, to quote a popular Chuck Lorre TV series that isn’t canceled for the season – not spitting on the character of the recently deceased “is a non-optional social convention.”

  10. As I said earlier, I found Jim Travers’s partisan, one-sided opinions extremely irritating. However, that doesn’t mean that I’m glad he died.
He was a human being who happened to disagree with many of my opinions. He was also a husband, father, son, brother, friend.
For his family and friends, I feel sympathy and compassion.
‘Anyone have a problem with that?

  11. The man was an idiot and a terrible, petty writer, with a small view of the world. The fact that he has passed away doesn’t change that.
Someone on the comments called his passing “notable”. Holy smokes – it’s amazing what passes for notable these days.
Note that nowhere in my comments have I said that I am *glad* that he has passed away, or that I wish his family ill. But I certainly won’t miss him even for a minute.
For the record, when I pass away if SDA readers want to say a few negative things about me, it won’t bother me in the least.

  12. Why is everyone raving about this man? I always found his columns to be so far from the truth that I could barely get through them.
He had his beliefs. He wrote about them. He made his living that way. Hard for nasty little internet worms like you to understand.

  13. I agree with Richard Evans.I would switch the channel ,as I knew everytime what he was going to say.

  14. No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend’s or of thine own were: any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee.
    -John Dunne
    De mortuis nil nisi bonum

  15. Seems I need to repeat myself.
One of the hallmarks of Conservatism, and indeed one of the things we are trying to conserve, is the common civility between Canadians that our parents took for granted. The dancing and handing out candies when a merely partisan opponent dies we leave to the barbarians and the Left.
If you have nothing nice to say today, -shut up-.
You’ve got the whole rest of your life to slag Traver’s writing and politics. Today we acknowledge the ephemeral nature of those things, their complete unimportance in the face of Life and Death.
And maybe extend an olive branch in the hope we could get along a bit better, God forbid. If by no other means than a reserved -silence-.
Who taught you guys manners eh? My mum would whack your heads with the wooden spoon, better believe it. Costs nothing to show some class, kids.

  16. Phantom you are just whining. Don’t be such a sissy. I imagine you will wax sentimental when Jack Layton passes away too. The very thought of it makes me shudder.
Paul said “Maybe I will buy the K-W Record again”. Best comment so far. Ditto for me with regards to our local paper.
Show some spine people. I read an article somewhere, I’ll have to dig it up, about this quirk in human nature that causes us to go from disliking someone when they are alive to feeling positively sorry for them when they pass away. It is probably due to the fact that we all know we are mortal.
But idiots are idiots, and I’m sorry but Travers was an idiot yesterday and he remains one today. His passing away changes nothing. You cannot hold such stupid opinions for so many years, and put them in print for all the world to see, and then expect sympathy when you pass away.

  17. TJ, you are an ass. A true conservative will remove his hat and stand in silence as the hearse passes by. Rejoice on the death of Gaddafi, Amadinejad and their ilk – for they were truly evil, but rejoice on the death of a man who never did you or anyone harm, and you are truly not worthy of being a member of the conservative community. Conservatism is based on respect, values and a moral code that transcends stupidity. I may not have agreed with Mr Travers, but I believe that the time to dissect a man’s legacy is when, in all decency, the period of mourning for his family and friends has passed. You, sir, are not a conservative and therefore not a gentleman. Gloating over the death of a political opponent is about as low as it gets. Frack you – and get your hiney over to rabble.ca where those adolescent sentiments belong.

  18. TJ: “I imagine you will wax sentimental when Jack Layton passes away too.”
Nope. I will be -silent- as a show of respect for -myself-, AND the family with whom I have no quarrel that I know of, AND to make this country a better place to live in instead of some kind of never ending rat fight like Libya.
Jack Layton is a frickin’ stooge. A bumbler. A preening, primping little attention seeker swimming -far- out of his depth. He is in fact of no real importance to me as a person, and therefore I would not lower my standards to declaim against him the day he dies.
The day of a person’s death is not about that person. They’ve gone. The day is about those left behind. They don’t need any extra lip from me today, do they?
Therefore, I remain silent. You should try it TJ, its good discipline to take the high road.

  19. Tanker,
OK, I get it. I won’t think that that he was an asshole until the hearse passes.
He’s not an asshole … he’s not an asshole … he’s not an asshole …
    Am I a conservative now?

  20. Phantom wrote: “Who taught you guys manners eh? My mum would whack your heads with the wooden spoon, better believe it. Costs nothing to show some class, kids.”
My mother, the original Mrs.Manners, would be aghast at that cracking display of class.
As for Travers emailing SDA posters back, MANY Canadian journalists personally respond to emails; Don Martin, Pete McMartin, Terry Glavin, Graham Richardson, who is very polite, and an infrequent columnist for the Vancouver Sun, whose name escapes me now, but who actually admitted that he was wrong after a back-and-forth conversation (how often does that happen?!)…are some examples. Canadian media representatives are approachable, compared to those in the USA.

  21. RJ’s opinion may be harsh, but it’s honest. I am not sure where Tanker gets off deciding who is a conservative and who is not.

  22. Guess I shouldn’t say that he might have lived if we went to the best US hospital?

  23. It’s not even a “conservative” value, not dancing on someone’s grave, because not everything is politics; it’s just decency. Now I’ve been guilty of dancing on occasion, and in fact I don’t regret it at all; the demise of “better off dead” Ted Kennedy springs to mind. But if I were religious I’d even have said a prayer for Ted himself. Unless Jim Travers was really monstrous then gloating over his demise is rotten.
TJ, Richard Evans, don’t you have any friend who doesn’t agree with you politically in lock-step? Are such people just not human?

  24. “Mr Kurtz he dead.”
Closer to our spiritual heart of darkness.
    The horror, the horror.
Not faulting anyone here but lets pull it over to the shoulder and let the funeral procession pass.

  25. Young men will sometimes die, but old men must. But batby is right, 62 is too young, and I know this is so, because I just turned 62. However, I managed to make it through life without ever having heard of the man. Unfortunately, I happened to see Rae blubbering on the news, it was really gross for a man who supports abortion and euthanasia. Likely he voted against the Chiefs revealing their salaries too.

  26. As a fellow journalist from Toronto who moved right in my thinking, Travers’ hyper Liberal partisanship always infuriated me. HOWEVER . . . as a libertarian mentor once told me: “You have to read your enemies to find out what they’re thinking.” So I bit my lip and read it every time, because there was no more reliable indicator of interior Liberal thinking than Jim Travers. At least the Chretien left wing of the party . . . RIP, Mr. Travers.

  27. To those who have concerns with keeping it classy, I find it disappointing. I thought being disrespectful was the sole provenance of the left.

  28. Would it be crass to say that Jane Russell’s death yesterday, somehow touched me deeper?

  29. larben, far be it from me to be jaded, but Bob Rae will never let an opportunity to showboat pass him by.

  30. Kate’s post reveals just how shrewd she is. The fish in the aquarium have gone into a frenzy.
Abe, infinity^2, chutzpahticular, twisticles, etc. you have your heads on right. Some here are weeping over Jim Travers which makes me think I’ve gone to a different universe.
The day Trudeau passed away I opened a bottle of champagne and drank the entire thing. That’s not bad manners, that’s a very respectable and acceptable use of champagne.
I’m sure Jim Travers was a decent fellow in his own way. But I’m not going to get all soft just because he has come to the end of this life. He does not merit it.

  31. Jim Travers was a part of the Liberal Smear Machine.. that is it….I’m happy that there is one less left of them to continue spouting garbage….

  32. TJ – nobody’s asking you to “get all soft”. Was the man a monster? Otherwise…
larben – no, nothing wrong with that. I always thought of her as “the chick in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes who wasn’t Marilyn”, but really she deserved better.

  33. To those that seem stuck on disparaging commentary towards a bit of condolence to the family…
While I concur that most if not all he wrote was a bunch of left-wing claptrap, he would debate respectfully, unlike the rest of the liberal punditry and political hacks.
He was one of the lefts advocates, we can agree on that, though how effective..we can debate that some other time.
    Heres the point.
We don’t have to stoop to the level of the lefties.
    We should behave like adults.
He can’t write anymore columns now, and the left has to try to find a replacement that has his status among the talking heads…they don’t.
So take that thought, and then say something nice or nothing at all.

  34. A lot of assholes on this thread. A whole lot of assholes who express, in anonimity, things they’d never dare say aloud.
You’re glad that children have lost a father and a wife lost a husband, all because he favoured a different political viewpoint? Congratulations, assholes.
    Pardon my profanity.

  35. Okay Yukon iron pyrites, let’s not get too emotional about the whole thing. Would it be wrong to say it about the father and husband, Gaddafi or however they spell his bloody name?

  36. Black Mamba the matter of what to say when someone passes away depends on the person as well as one’s own view of them.
When Mugabe passes away I suspect I will be drinking champagne, setting of fireworks in my backyard, and writing as many letters as I can to the newspaper describing what a bastard he was. After all, he stole my parent’s entire life savings. I will probably end up in hospital celebrating his death. No doubt there will be many pinkos on the left who will call me a bastard for celebrating in this way. To hell with them.
Of course Jim Travers is not Mugabe. But he was still a total fool, and he did *precious little* to make Canada a better place. So while he won’t get fireworks or champagne, I’m not going to wimp out and sit quietly saying nothing upon hearing that he passed away.
There *are* people who I disagree quite strongly with, but who I will find many kind things to say about when they pass away. But in my view the obituary for Travers should say fool, fool, and fool.
(Come to think of it, I need to put a bottle of champagne aside for Suzuki as well.)
We have grown very weak in the west. I must say I do not understand the fuss about saying a few negative things about someone who has passed away, especially when that person chose to publish their idiotic views *far and wide*.

  37. “Black Mamba the matter of what to say when someone passes away depends on the person as well as one’s own view of them.”
TJ, EXACTLY. For a conservative to be so sanctimonious as to demand that we all must conform and not say anything if we have nothing nice to say is ludicrous. This is not the Guest Book available after an online obituary. This is a political blog. If people want to post their condolences, wouldn’t it make sense to do that where the family and friends might read them?
    Control freaks irk me.

  38. There is nothing more aggravating than having your debating opponent drop dead! I mean how do you answer that one?!
Condolences and prayer for Jim’s family and friends. Do you suppose he has finally encountered a true utopia and not some man made pale imitation of same?
