Louis Prima was an American singer and trumpeter whose unmistakably Italian-sounding, confident voice and loose, almost jokey performing style made him a – reluctant – favourite of mobsters in Chicago, Las Vegas, and New York. In tonight’s selection, a song called Felicia No Capicia, Prima lightheartedly complains about an expensive date who for some reason doesn’t quite grasp the whole quid pro quo thing.

    FAIRBANKS — After nearly two decades of gloomy population forecasts, the Porcupine Caribou Herd appears to be on the rebound.
    The Alaska Department of Fish and Game said an aerial photo survey conducted in July shows there are at least 123,000 caribou in the herd, with more animals left to be counted. That means the population has increased since 2001, when the last aerial census was conducted.
    The herd ranges from northeastern Alaska into the Yukon Territory, and was thought to be in decline since a 1989 survey estimated it had 178,000 animals. As recently as 2009, computer models figured the herd was shrinking.
    The most recent numbers are making state biologists re-evaluate that estimate. It’s unclear how high the final tally for last summer’s census will go, but it will be higher than the 123,000 caribou counted in 2001.
    Department of Fish and Game spokeswoman Cathie Harms said conditions for the survey were excellent, with clear photos and good weather.
    “We’re confident we got a real good number,” Harms said.
    The herd is managed cooperatively by Alaska and Canada, and the estimates could be a factor in how the Porcupine herd is hunted. Canada’s managers will meet in early February to establish hunting regulations in the Yukon, and Alaska biologists will offer recommended changes before the Board of Game next considers the Porcupine herd in March 2012.
    The Porcupine herd is the second-largest caribou herd in the state. The herd has sometimes gained a national profile because it usually calves in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge’s coastal plain. That factor, among others, is cited by conservationists who want the area off-limits to oil development.
    The Western Arctic Caribou Herd — which ranges across the area between the Arctic Ocean and Yukon River west of the trans-Alaska pipeline — is the state’s largest herd, with an estimated population of about 400,000 animals.
    Biologists expect to offer an official estimate for the Porcupine herd’s size in March.

    The excavated ditches contained large numbers of evenly germinated hulled barley grains, which Dr Stika believes are the remains of the production of high quality barley malt needed for making beer. The remains appear to be the result of deliberate germination and given the associated unusual archaeological structure it seems they were used for deliberate germination and/or as a drying kiln for roasting the malt.

  15. john begley @2:37 a.m.: Both Louis Prima and Keely Smith used to give me the creeps. I was a kid when I first saw them and they just seemed weird: He was an idiot and Keely was a zombie.
    EBD @11:43 p.m.: Does this professor have any children of his own? His reprehensible comments would seem to indicate no; if he does have kids, I hate to think how he treats them.
    We’ve entered a new age of barbarism.

  19. Anyone seen Bing’s current home page? There’s a picture of a young baby seal, with four different links. One of the links is titled “Around 300,000 baby seals are murdered in Canada each year”. The link takes you to wikipedia’s article on the seal hunt. Either the people at Bing don’t know that killing baby seals was stopped years ago, or they’re lying through their teeth to create sympathy for their cause.
