Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

“Frank Zappa, anyone?”
Bobby Brown (Goes Down)is well-known worldwide, except for the USA, where it was banned from airplay. Zappa was determined to be universally unfit for commercial broadcast back in the sixties and that has not changed greatly. He spent a life time fighting self righteous censors and small minded anti intellects who had control of popular art/music/culture. They black-listed him and tried to entrap him.
Frank started his own label, publishing company and distribution agency. His work had a near total blackout on commercial radio with the exception of pirate and campus FM. Commercial FM play restricts itself to less graphic Zappa material. Yet he has all his albums still in distribution with sales over 200 million. He is a rock/composer icon in spite of the censor’s best efforts.
It appears the infantile, small minded bigotry that drove right wing censorship in the 60s-80s has now found a home in left wing PC sophistry. Again, Zappa was front and center challenging the sophistry of self appointed censors when he tore Al and Tipper Gore a new A-hole in the Rock lyrics committee witch hunt. We saw at that time, the left picking up the narrow minded censorious authorutarianism of the McCarthy era ruling class. Zappa was the canary in the coal mine where the first amendment meets establishment censorship.
It’s obvious to me that many are still a little fuzzy on what “political correctness” really is.
Why would anyone seriously expect anything different?
Meh, I thought fag was what the Brits used to call a cigarette and gay meant happy.
Waiting soon for “The dream police, they’re coming to arrest me…” Yeah, a Cheap Trick I know ;-)>
Funny. They say that the word “faggot” is unacceptable…yet they include it in their correspondence. Shouldn’t they censor themselves?
Physician, heal thyself.
The older definition of faggot, mentioned by Curious at January 13, 2011 9:09 AM, gave rise to the term fascism. Interesting that the spellcheck on Chrome as I type this comment neither recognizes faggot nor spellcheck.
that’s okay foobert, I hate rock, lets ban it!
“No more Rock & Roll”
Regardless you your taste in music (or not music like rap) I think we should put aside this ridiculous hypocrisy.
“and you Chinese Black Green Purple Jew, YOU have the right to listen to who ever you want to, and even if it’s Too Live Crew. So all you Right-wingers, Left-wingers, bigots, communists; there is a place in this world for you, because this is the ‘Land of the Free, the Home of the Brave’ and Too Live is what we are.”~Luc Campbell
I can see hypocrisy from my keyboard. These guys took one for the team, and we should respect that as conservatives and libertarians, because none of us are safe from being “Banned in the USA”
Thanks Curious
I’m thinking of diversifying- selling firewood in Vancouver as a sideline. I believe there’d be a good market there.
Do you think $5 and $8 per faggot (short/long) is about right?
Or how about highway girl – the live “double suicide” version. Power 97 (local station in Winnipeg) used to play it quite a lot, it was probably the most popular tragically hip song. The song raised thousands of dollars for charities during a drive on power 97.
Someone complained to power 97 about the song and its “senstive nature” . I read power 97’s response to the complaint it was pretty good. Basically told the person to shove it.
So the person complained to the CBSC.
The song is no longer played in Canada.

Additionally compliance with the CBSC is completely voluntary.
Here it the complaint in full for highway girl:

I watched an interview with Mark Knopfler, who is one of my favourite writers/musicians,couldn’t care less about his sex life.
He was in an appliance store in New York city, and a coverall-clad fellow came out of the back room pulling a dolly with an appliance. After he unloaded it,he took a “breather” and stood watching the display TV they had set up.
The channel was turned to MTV,and the fellow started making these remarks to the store’s staff, “look at that yo-yo,that ain’t working, ya play yer gui-tar on the MTV”…
Knopfler said he quickly realized the guy’s remarks were perfect for a song,so he borrowed some paper from one of the clerks and wrote down all the lines as the guy stood there watching MTV.
I love the song, and a lot of the other stuff Mark Knopfler’s done over his long career.
Here’s the press release for money for nothin’:
http://www.cbsc.ca/english/documents/prs/2011/110112.php
Getting ready to come down hard on the new cable news channel no doubt.
“We already censored a harmless song, what you are showing is much worse. Get it off!”
Everyone make a complaint to the CBSC about how much CBSC council advertisements on TV offend them.
http://www.cbsc.ca/english/complaint/form.php
I want my CBSC for nothing and my speech for free!
The song also contains the lyric referring to the drummer as “bangin’ on that drum like a chimpanzee”.
Given that Howard Cosell was forced to apologize for his reference to a Negro wide receiver,”look at that little monkey run”, during a Monday Night Football broadcast in the 1970’s,as The Politically Correct said it was racist, the song should also be further banned until they clear up THAT lyric!
Is there still radio in Canada? I haven’t listened to anything but my ever-growing MP3 collection and Sirius for several years now.
When I set my mp3 player to shuffle there’s no commercials, no censors bleeping things out and best of all, -zero- Lady Gaga songs. None. Not one. Ever. She can get on the air, she can get on TV and in the paper, but she can’t get on my ipod.
The Chairman of the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council was on Adler today (I think his name is Chairman “Cone” or something, or maybe it was “Chairman Mao”?).
He claimed that decisions like this are in the private stations’ interests — “we are working in response to your requests” (rough quote).
Yep, I can imagine how private station owners are just lining with their requests to the Dear Chairman to “please censor us, especially the old classical songs from 25 years ago”.
Truth is, I’ve listened to that song probably a thousand times in my lifetime and never noticed before that the word “faggot” appeared in the lyrics. It’s probably the case with most classic rock songs — the lyrics are often muffled by the music.
These censors are fighting Don Quijote’s “windmills” from the past and want us all to join in their delusional battles. And there probably isn’t a single case in history where the song has caused damage to a gay person.
Seriously, the “Don Quijote” analogy is perfect for the political correctors our time. The Miguel de Cervantes classic — voted as the greatest classic in the world next to the Bible — is about a chivalristic old knight who rode around the countryside dressed in shining armour atop his steed because he was deluded into thinking he was saving “young damsels in distress” and fighting “fire breathing” dragons.
The problem was the age of knighthood was long gone — Don Quijote de la Mancha was hallucinating. He mistook the windmills in the Spanish countryside for “dragons” and old washerwomen for “young damsels in distress”.
Oh,and as to Mark Knopfler’s alleged homosexuality:
“Mark Knopfler has been married three times.
While he was living in Leeds he married Kathy White, his long-time girlfriend from school days. They separated before Knopfler moved to London to join Brewers Droop.[8]
Knopfler married for the second time in November 1983, to Lourdes Salomone, and became a father to twin sons, Benji and Joseph in 1987,[15] both of whom he has said are talented musically, and aspiring musicians. Knopfler’s marriage to Salomone ended in 1993.[16]
Knopfler’s third marriage is to actress Kitty Aldridge,[23] and has given him two daughters Isabella (born 1998) and Katya Ruby Rose (born 2003).[24] The family currently lives in Chelsea.”
Knopfler acts very much like a heterosexual, but don’t let that get around,it may be illegal in England.
Imho, the man’s a great artist, songwriter, and musician, and has way more talent than the members of the CBSC have intelligence.

That reminds me, I remember when Rock and Around the Clock was banned in the 1950s.
(can’t have our kids rockin ‘n rollin)
And Susan Cole editor of “Now Magazine” appeared on Radio today with the outrageous claim that the origin of the word “faggot” (e.g. “smoldering wood”) is from when they burned homosexuals at the stake! Horses**t.
They burned people at the stake for being heretics, and perhaps a tiny percentage of those heretics also happened to be homosexual. But in fact heretics were more often WOMEN falsely accused of “witchraft” — which is more reminiscent of Sarah Palin today who according to the MSM seems to have the uncanny ability to produce murderous massacres thousands of miles away through her mind control! (And I’m sure gay radicals would likewise love to see Palin “burn at the stake” for her views on Gay marriage).
The origin of the word “faggot” has nothing to do with this phoney history of burning homosexuals at the stake. They wouldn’t have referred to “smoldering wood” as “faggots” specifically in reference to heretics who were burned at the stake exclusively because they were homosexual. So what did they call the burned wood from the mostly heterosexual heretics — “straighties”?
The whole thing is another fairytale (no pun intended).
Not surprised, the censors have taken control of the net, our garbage, the written word, and now the radio. These are the self same activists screaming get “Out of our bedrooms” whilst infecting every room in my house with their progressive regressive laws. The gay community just crossed a line, no one agrees with this ruling. My brother-in-law is gay and he calles himself an “Ole faggot” yes that’s right the gay community can spew faggot, queer, homo extra but gawd forbid if we the little people offend their self rightous tender sensibilities.
Does anyone remember when the faggots and their supporters were whining and moaning about censorship when Vancouver’s Little Sisters (homosexual) bookstore was having its shipments seized by Canada Customs?
I remember Teach, and similar things happened in other areas of the country.
But that was back in the day when the activists believed in “free speech for all. Apparently they’ve graduated beyond that and into the state that Orwell decribed in “Animal Farm”:
“All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”
Mark Knopfler has been married three times.
And how many times has Mick Jagger been married?
Oscar Wilde, famous playwrite, poet, and notorious homosexual was a married man who sired two boys.
And then there is Pierre Trudeau…
Being married doesn’t mean a man has never engaged in homosexual activities.

“Well, it is par for the course that the complaint was made from Newfoundland; they don’t have any Dree grants and they have to do something for a living”
Well Larben, unless you’re from Alberta you’ll have to keep it down over there, because at last check Newfoundland was ‘have’ province, and we’re sending the rest of Canada transfer payments. Have to do something for a living? We do, and do it well. But we don’t have to put up with ignorant welfare bums like you. Not a fan of such talk? Unfortunately, you’ll have to deal with it. We did for years, and we won’t anymore.
“Being married doesn’t mean a man has never engaged in homosexual activities.”
No,and being a musician doesn’t mean he HAS.
Besides,I always thought most of Britain’s homosexuals were employed by the government in MI5 or the House of Lords,or some such.
P.S. don’t forget about Pierre (the stud)’s daughter!
My own theory is that the complainant was Ashley MacIsaac. He’s so vain he probably thinks the song is about him.
So I shouldn’t expect any Dr. Hook music on Canadian airwaves any time soon. Actually, reading some of the lyrics of music I grew up with, it’s a wonder I’m sane.
OT but since it was mentioned; being burnt at the stake was a most cruel end. Green wood was used so the victim couldn’t quickly parish.
What grinds my groin, is the fact that one day homosexuality was illegal, the next day it wasnt, and shortly after we were supposed to be in love with our previously criminal “–mos”..Makes a straight man gag,not that there is anything wrong with that.We are becoming a country of suckholes and ass-kissers.
That should be perish.
William @7:57 Well it’s about bloody time! Maybe a guy can go into a bar for a beer without having one of youse playing your bloody spoons in hopes of a free beer and all the B.S. about Alonzo Marsh.
Are we going to now register our music? Like Guns for content?
Are we to turn in old songs not corrected for burning?
If we don’t will the police arrest us?
That questions like this are even asked shows you how far Canada is in the sink hole. As for the Private broadcasters, their just following orders or the intent of the CHRC? After all they put out the standards. They know the Mcleans persecution better than most
JMO
No surprise considering the disgusting group of extreme leftys and gay & lesbian activists that sit on the CBSC’s panel. A real who’s, who of agenda pushing wing-nuts. The list of CBSC’s censors can be found at: http://www.cbsc.ca/english/about/panels.php

“That reminds me, I remember when Rock and Around the Clock was banned in the 1950s.”
sorry for the late reply
I guess you can say that these things are cyclical eh? haha
