In 1964 playwright/songwriter Billy Edd Wheeler wrote a song inspired by the interpersonal marital nastiness in Edward Albee’s 1963 play Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf. Lyricist Jerry Leiber, whom Wheeler had been introduced to a few years earlier, suggested that Wheeler take the last verse – the “climax” of the song, in Wheeler’s mind – and open the song with it. The result was, er, hotter than a pepper sprout: From 1975, here are Johnny and June Carter Cash performing a frisky version of Jackson.

    At the top of Jim Hoft’s site today, is how the Coptic Churches in Europe are now reporting new islamic threats, I suppose one is never enough.

    I’m not offended, as noted there… “The clips are juvenile and at times a tad offensive, but let’s put things in perspective here. During WWII, President Roosevelt’s military built brothels for the troops to help keep up their, ahem, “morale.”

  6. NDP party in BC is a joke. One of their executive may have to step down if they don’t elect a woman as leader and so far there are no women candidates.

  9. Is anyone actually following BC politics? Boring hardly starts to describe the Lib race to replace Premier Campbell.
    This recent tidbit is somebody’s idea of a great campaign though: The New Year is bringing a new slogan for George Abbott’s provincial Liberal leadership campaign. Right now, that slogan is “The Right Leader for BC.” But it’s being changed to “The People are Coming.”

  10. The NDP in BC could no doubt kill two birds with one stone, by hiring a Transgendered “person”, of colour. Moe Sihota is, as far as I am aware, a Sikh whose religion is opposed not just to homosexuality but to living single. Wonder what his standing within the temple is in Surrey right now. Though, like many rich kids I believe he was schooled at St, George’s in Vancouver, an expensive private school probably of Anglican provenance.

  16. If I remember rightly, back in his UBC days, Moe Sihota was the voice of (if not the entire membership of) the Communist Party of Canada (Marxist-Leninist), CPC-ML for short. Had to distinguish themselves from those squishy non Marxist-Leninist Communists, I guess.
    The tree grows not far from where the rotten apple falls, or something like that.

    World leaders recently negotiated a new climate agreement at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Cancun, Mexico, but public interest in the issue was limited. It was a marked contrast to the UN climate conference in Copenhagen in December 2009, which had been declared of historic importance in the runup to the meeting, only to then fail spectacularly. The theft of e-mails from the University of East Anglia had badly damaged the image of climate research shortly before the summit.
    Environmentalists and scientists are concerned about the massive drop in public interest in the topic over the last year. Now they are looking for new strategies to turn the tide. They’re searching for so-called “mind bombs” — highly emotional images that reduce a complex problem down to one core message.
    Fountains of Blood
    Some environmental organizations are placing their bets on the shock factor. One commercial in a campaign by the British-based environmental organization 10:10 showed a teacher blowing up two students who were skeptical about cutting their carbon emissions, with fountains of blood spraying the others in the class. Other 10:10 videos have the same fate befalling recalcitrant office workers and footballers. But the campaign proved a dud — it sparked massive protests and was quickly withdrawn.
    More successful was a Greenpeace advertising spot that targeted the multinational food company Nestlé. Greenpeace wanted the video, in which a bar of chocolate turns out to be a gorilla’s bleeding finger, to be understood as a symbol of endangered rainforests, where harvesting palm oil for chocolate production encroaches on great apes’ habitats. After the video caused a considerable stir, Nestlé promised to stop using products that damaged rainforests.
    Video spots such as Greenpeace’s have drawn attention in the short term, but they aren’t enough to stop the media trend away from climate issues, confirms Sebastian Metzger from the Berlin-based organization co2online, which regularly measures public awareness on the topic using its “climate barometer.”

Margolin — whose first name is also transliterated as Julius or Yuly, and was also known as Yehudah in Israel — should be as familiar a name as Solzhenitsyn for bearing witness to the Soviet gulag system. Yet the first-ever complete edition of Margolin’s almost 800-page-long gulag memoir in any language only appeared last November from the small Paris literary press Les éditions Le Bruit du temps.
    “Voyage au pays des Ze-Ka” (“Trip to the Land of Ze-kas”), now edited and translated by Luba Jurgenson — a Moscow-born Sorbonne professor who specializes in modern Russian history — was written in 1946 but neglected for decades. In France, an abridged edition of Margolin’s book appeared in 1949, under the title “La Condition Inhumaine” (“Inhuman Condition”), a title which parodied that of André Malraux’s naïve prewar Marxist novel, “La Condition Humaine” (“Man’s Fate”). This was followed by another abridged Russian-language version, which appeared from a New York publishing house, since it was impossible to print it in Stalinist Russia. An unsparing, often furious narrative, Margolin’s work was out of sync with widespread Western European admiration for the USSR.
    Born in Pinsk, Margolin earned a doctorate in philosophy at the University of Berlin in 1929, but became a resident of Palestine in 1937, after meeting Ze’ev Jabotinsky and other leading Zionists. Unfortunately, Margolin decided to visit his homeland in 1939, just before war broke out. He was arrested in Pinsk in 1940 and imprisoned by the Soviet secret police as a “Ze-Ka” (or Z/K). The term is a Russian-language abbreviation for zakliuchyonnyi, or “inmate,” a term which originally referred to prison laborers who built the White Sea Canal in the early 1930s. Unlike 8,000 of the slave laborers who died in that earlier project, Margolin survived his imprisonment in several gulags. He returned to Palestine in 1946, where he wrote his memoir in Russian, finally finishing the book in 1947.”

    That isn’t surprising when you consider that greens have been telling us for the past decade that snow will disappear from our lives. Literally. ‘Snow is starting to disappear from our lives’, reported the Independent in March 2000. It quoted an expert from the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia (of recent Climategate fame) who said ‘children just aren’t going to know what snow is’. In 2006, the US-based Union of Concerned Scientists said winters had become ‘warmer and less snowy’ thanks to global warming.”

  29. In a rare display of humility, Warren Kinsella explains to Charles Adler how he came to predict Iggy getting elected PM last year.
    He openly admits that his only reason for making this prediction was, “He’s the other guy.” What he failed to take into account completely was the simple notion that Iggy and the Libs WERE EVEN WORSE on economic policy than Harper and the Conservatives.
    I find this a stunning indictment of many, many pundits and how they get trapped in their own B.S.
