Now you see it… now you don’t.
Instead of taking editorial responsibility by informing Globe readers that former editorial board member Warren Clements had based an opinion piece critical of the intelligence of Tea Party members on an email hoax – the Globe and Mail quietly removed the incriminating seven year old photograph 12 days after publication and hoped nobody would notice.
Well, here’s where you can tell them you’ve noticed.

  5. My two cents to the editor:
    Dear Sir,
    ‘Twould appear Warren Clements’ little hatchet piece, “Tea Party defeats its own cause with atrocious spelling” (Dec 10) has undergone a bit of airbrushing. The erstwhile accompanying photograph purporting to illustrate Mr. Clements’ point but, in fact, taken from a 2003 anti-war protest, glaringly pointed out how shoddily researched and poorly substantiated was Mr. Clements’ piece. Having been roundly ridiculed in the comments for this obvious gaffe the Globe and Mail and Mr. Clements had three options — leave it be and accept the criticism, man up and admit the mistake or sweep the blooper under the rug and try whistling in the night in the hope no one would notice. Your paper chose the last. In these tough economic times it’s good to know Winston Smith has found gainful employment at the Globe and Mail.

  9. I was a subscriber to the Globe since I was in university in the mid 80’s.
    I stopped the subscription about 6 months ago since they have shifted editorial positions to be more….well I am not sure.
    I had high hopes for them after they tossed Eddie Greenspan (Greenspon??), but after some intial promise their descent has continued. So no more money from me.
    Sorry guys, despite an improved sports section you have lost your way. My bet, they endorse Ignatieff in the coming election, and will write some tortuous editorial justifying their position. That will only confirm the decision.
    Sorry guys, you need to rethink who you are, what you want to be and what you believe in. Junius doesnt mean anything to you anymore and hasn’t for a long long time.

  10. The National Post has better crosswords. You can always tell a displaced Torontonian in Edmonton because the buy the Mop and Pail, stick our their arm before they cross the street and refer to ‘the hydro bill’. It takes decades for them to lose those habits.

    The downward spiral in the Globe has been a boon to the National Post. Incidents like this are helpful.

    I’ve just sent mine to Stackhouse and cc’ed the other two. I kept it civil, and avoided calling them “maroons and ignoranimuses”, but, if they’re any good at language processing, they’ll be able to “read between the lines” and come to that conclusion all by themselves. Maybe: I’m not sure their self-regard is at all penetrable.

    Where oh where did the picture in Clements Dec 10 Piece go? You know the one – trying to disparage the Tea Party by using an old picture of some lefty anti war protester.
    I noticed you also deleted the comment by Kate McMillan – you know her … too well, I suspect. She is the owner of the best blog in Canada http://www.smalldeadanimals.com
    As your own commenters on Clements article show, your biased “news”paper is fooling no none.
    Anyways, have a great day and get a life while you all are at it. And remember; being able to spell eloquently while not being able to think coherently is the same as anything times zero is still zero!

  19. Oh they noticed alright. The comments were filled with guffaws and derisive laughter. Liberal ‘journalism’ took a major hit with that one.
    The ‘morans’ at the Glob and Pail are merely trying to wipe the chit off their faces. My guess is it will take more than 12 days to do it…

  28. Here’s my little note to the editor, under the title “You folks are Morans.”
    On December 10 the Globe published an article penned by Warren Clements; “Tea Party defeats its own cause with atrocious spelling.” This was largely based on a photograph supposedly supporting his thesis. However, the published photograph intended to ridicule the Tea Party was actually taken at a 2003 anti-war protest.
    Did the Globe publish a correction? No! Instead you tried to rewrite history by quietly deleting the offending photo assuming that nobody would notice. You were wrong.
    A cowardly act!

  29. No, jay forbes, I don’t think . . . like you at all. (Check out libel, which is the point here, which, no surprise, you’ve entirely missed.)
    Let’s look at something more fundamental than spelling mistakes—and I’m sure there are many pictures of the lefties’ mistakes, other than the one referenced here. (And, on the subject of outward signs of apparent stupidity, how about Obama’s belief that there are 57 states, that people in Austria speak Austrian—they speak German—and that “corpsman” is pronounced “corpse man”, among many other boners made by the president, himself?)
    After Obama’s inauguration, his apparently “green-friendly, environmentally sensitive” camp followers left a huge mess behind: 100 TONS OF GARBAGE.

  30. UM jay forbes I think you can read so I hope you can understand that this thread is not about spelling. Its about inept writing/editing at the Globe and Mail. The Globe writer didn’t take into account that his readers are capable of checking his sources. The editor didn’t bother doing what his readers did. Doesn’t look good on the Globe and Mail now does it.

  32. Why do these latte liberals always fall back on their old argument? They think the economic pie is of a fixed, never changing size. The rich have to share the wealth blah blah.
    The total economic pie is always changing and morphing in size, shape and make up.
    Those with wealth create more wealth(jobs) and the workers create even more wealth with their productivity.
    Meanwhile the latte liberals and the so-called intellectuals are constantly coming up with ideas on how to create Utopia if only the other two groups would listen. Their track record? Zero.
    Speaking of the filthy rich, it seems most are firmly in the limousine socialist camp – Al Gore, Maurice Strong, Michael Bloomberg, George Soros, ….
    And, ya, I know what is coming next – it is those big bad oil companies that are against the global warming scam. Trouble is the world’s oil reserves and production is 90% state/government controlled. Gazprom, Pemex, Saudi Aramco, Petrobras, Petróleos de Venezuela, …….

  37. I saw a correction re the infamous photo in the Globe recently, perhaps late last week. It might have been on the inside back page of the Life section rather than page 2, but I’m not sure, and I didn’t go looking for it.
