“How about a big buck contest at SDA?”

That in a message from the estimable Darcey Jerrom (now dusting a broom every Friday), a message that concludes “I got six in 3 days – best week I’ve ever had in my life!”. One here:

It’s whitetail season again, so posting will be slow here over the next several days.
For those who find it disturbing to think that I might take the life of an innocent animal in the name of sport, let me assure you right here and now that this year I’ll be hunting with a video camera.
I’ll just have to put it down to take a shot.

Darcey clearly also has a camera and…he has a new rifle.

  1. Great looking buck Darcy!!!!
Bet the ol Savage 99 has proven itself in spades.
I’m stuck in another Islamic craphole with my passport held by customs & Immigration waiting on visas. I was supposed to be home over two weeks ago, and will be stuck here for the foreseeable future as hunting season nears its close.
Try and leave the rest of us some deer if you would Darcy, some of us might be lucky enough to get a day or two out yet this year 🙂

  2. Domestic animals know what a slaughter house means, they smell the death, that’s why they piss themselves as they enter the death chamber.
Free range animals like deer, never know what is going to happen to them, so they die without fear. Maybe that is why they are tastier.

  3. Hunter: “Free range animals like deer, never know what is going to happen to them, so they die without fear. Maybe that is why they are tastier.”
Nah. It’s the Spätzle with a thick wine gravy.

  4. Hate to be a wet noodle thrower here but the quote “I got six in 3 days” definitely does not work for me and it mentions he is using a new rifle. From the looks of that pic what appears to be an exit wound on that deer is a long ways toward the gut shot region and maybe a bit of work at the range is in order if that is one of his six.
I really hope my observations are wrong about the shooting but from the picture it really looks that way to a person that hunted for 50 years before he had to give his rifle to his grandson. The part about 6 in 3 days I do not feel bad about criticizing. The last time I checked one tag was all one guy got.

  5. Now,if Darcey would sell me that Savage 99,I’d get six deer in three days too!
Yeah, does look like a gut shot! Gettin’ shaky in his old age, maybe Darcey can buy on a’ those deer shotguns for next season. 😉

  6. Bob…he’s Metis. He don’t need no effin tag. Not like us racist white guys(mind u ,darcy is really not that bad)

  7. Two shots boys. First went thru the shoulder blade and spun across, 2nd to the heart. I was shaky though as I watched this guy for two days. The 6 tags are for white and mulies with the supplementals.

  8. 6/3 … well I suppose that settles the bolt vs lever action debate for today.
    yum.
    good stuff Darcey, stay healthy.

  9. An angle shot from the front, behind the right shoulder will create an exit wound near the back of the left rib cage. So would any internal deflection.
The point is the .308 win is an outstanding performer on deer. Have used a couple .308’s for years with nothing but one shot drop success (aside from one moose hunt which took two bullets, one useless vital area shot and one finishing neck shot).
I’m wondering what Darcey is using for ammo??
I’ve always liked the 150SP in .308win, but am seeing the “on paper” ballistic benefits of 165gr as worth a look……………

  10. Nice one Darcy. There should be a few good meals in that one.
There was a nice big bull moose moving across our canola stubble field about 300 meters from our house at noon today. Our black collie thought discretion was the better part of valor and just stood and watched it and did not even bark. It looked beautiful against the snow background.

  11. Go Darcey, nice buck!
I haven’t seen a deer yet this year after two days in the stands around Algonquin Park.
    Two more days scheduled.
I’d like to enter my bear in the contest though.

  12. Justthinkin… If he wants to hunt according to those old original treaties or whatever let him use the same weapons they used back then. A muzzle loader or a bow made out of a willow stalk or even a spear if he wants, Go to the hunting area by foot, horse back or canoe not a SUV or Quad or snow mobil. That ancient rights crap is exactly that CRAP. This is 2010 there is no more of that wild west stuff these days. If the Metis or natives want to live like it is 2 or 3 hundred years ago fine, go for it but do not pick and choose the parts of both that suit you.

  13. Bob Devine (4:27) and Justthinkin (11:32), the natural predators – wolves, bears – are long gone at this point in many, many rural areas, so when it comes to deer – at least in the area I live in, where the ridiculously overpopulated deer just bored-ly cast an disinterested eye at you if you throw a rock at them or run after them waving your arms -I’d *love* to see updated Metis-exemption treaties that allow the use of *machine guns.*
I always laughed at the commercial – I think it’s for “Freedom 55”, or something – that shows a yuppie couple having a delighted vision of a a deer in their yard. It’s a strictly Toronto dream.
Porcupines, too, who can put an instant death sentence on a magnificent 60-year-old tree for the two-minute pleasure of a couple of rodentine ring-barking chews deserve a good cull.
Darcy: Wanna assert old treaties in my area? I’ll polish your gun, and pay for the ammo, and then punish you with a serving of steak and beer.

  14. I’m in the Natural Hills area in Alberta and I’ve never seen deer this thick and fat. Locals complain steadily and I’ve gotten land permission up the ying yang. They chew up bails, destroy cars and spread disease (when there are a lot). There are just not enough predators to control them. The gov should issue every household in the area with a .308 Savage….
    @ Knight 99 – using 180 grain.

  15. @Bob not-so-Devine: Darcey is hunting with exactly the same tags available to anyone else who applies for them in this area. The only thing he’s doing differently that I can see, is that he’s actually nailed his bag limit, whereas most hunters go home empty-handed. While we have an oversupply of deer, they’re skittish like you wouldn’t believe.
I also admire the fact that Darcey has plans for all the meat he’s bagged. We don’t give permission to hunters who are just looking for trophies to hang on the wall, and who don’t eat what they shoot. Darcey’s gonna have some happy Metis relatives, including some foster kids I’m given to understand. So we’re happy to have him.
He’s been a most gracious guest and he has a standing invitation to come back any time he can legally clear out more of these over-sized rats. When you can count over 50 head of deer in a five minute drive down a back road, there are too god-damned many. Only people happy about this are the local body shops, who have a six month backlog.

  16. Was that deer gut shot or is that the exit wound? Jus kiddin.
Still a bit swollen in the neck from rut to be a tasty freezer buck, but you get what you can on the government licence system. 3 weeks of harvest during rut. Makes no biological or conservation sense at all.

  17. > Darcy: Wanna assert old treaties in my area?
@EBD: Look, he’s OURS now and we’re not sharing. Go find your own Metis.

  18. C’mon, have a heart, Sean. We don’t have any Metis, just the Edmonton Journal’s Paula Simmons.
Her fists don’t fly like bees, to put it mildly…

  19. @langmann: Seriously, anyone who won’t shoot cattle by mistake, can close gates after themselves, has valid tags, and is generally respectful of the land is welcome to come out and harvest deer. E-mail is neutralhills [at] gmail [dot] com. Drop me a line.

    “@ Knight 99 – using 180 grain”
That’ll work, thanks for the reply! And solves any deep penetration exit wound “theories”. My regular pet loads – 150gr SP pass cleanly though big deer 99% of the time on broad shots, so no mystery for me.
I’ll reserve the 180’s for moose (personal preference), but I’m definitely going to start hand-loading my .308 win w/ 165gr for longer range energy retention based on the better BC. (Get more and give up nothing).
FYI – I do run 180gr Noslar Partitions in my .300 Win Mag for long elk shots and the occasional unexpected close range pop up. Terrible meat damage within 100 yards regardless, but it will anchor a trophy without much deliberation for a long way out.

  21. well, you can carry on about your damn venison but I really prefer an elk roast with it’s dark gravy.

  22. Six! I assume you must have a lot of friends who like venison, or at least a couple of really big chest freezers. I love venison, but I’d be eating granola if I had to consume all of that myself. At least send me a few pounds to I can make some venison sausage, man!

  23. Lots of fam. Have around 30 members in my local area (metis are prolific) I need to help out this winter.
@Knight – I got the 180’s as I’m still out for moose and elk – seemed like the best bargain. I would love to try your hand loads 😉

  24. Went out this afternoon and bagged a buck and a doe!
OK, OK, they’re actually animated Christmas reindeer for the front lawn. But it was a long hard hunt through Canadian Tire…

  25. While I agree with most of the political stances on this blog and am glad for its existence in this crazy world, this archaic practice of “sportmanship” sickens me. Some one brings down an innocent animal with all the new and expensive bells and whistles and then gets congratulated? There’s no contest here. If you really want to show your stuff, wrestle manually with the poor beast, knife him and then put him on your plate. Hunting for sport like this is for sissies. If you’re hungry, a case can be made.

  26. palval>
“this archaic practice of “sportmanship” sickens me”.
That’s ok palval, at least you have innate knowledge that there will always be real men around willing to have the guts to stand up for you, when the chips are down.
Unfortunately most liberal wienies, who are not hunting sportsman, will never understand the concept of humane kills and the game management that true hunters practice. They conveniently forget that it is the spread human habitation that has upset the balance of the animal world, driving out the top predators. Now various game species populations grow to starvation and disease levels in many parts of the country, simply due to the lack of top predators.
That is where we come in palval, and we do it cleanly and efficiently.
Fortunately for you our country was not founded and built on the skills and labors of Liberal Arts majors. They came afterwards, much, much later when it was safe to do so. Never forget you and others with liberal left ideals are in our space, not the other way around.

  27. Thanks for the elucidation, Knight 99. FYI, I am not in your space (or in your face, for that matter). I am part of your space. And where do you get the idea that I am a liberal leftie? You are so wrong, sweetheart. Look, I get the idea about game management and I fully agree with culls when necessary. I am not a sucker for a pretty face, be it a deer or a baby seal. But this kind of “sportsmanship”, the glee that’s evident in these these killings and the boasting that accompanies them, does not help our conserative cause. It’s the “old boys” mentality that comes to the fore and that’s what gets the press. Let’s move on. Put Ted Nugent behind you. There are other role models more worthy.

  28. “It’s the old boys mentality…….”
    hmmmm.
The oldest mentality in the world is my guess? Bad bad men.
Anyway, leave Ted Nugent alone, he rocks.
Apologies if I called you a lefty and your not. I couldn’t imagine a more dehumanizing thing to be called by someone else………
Anyway your entitled to your opinions, strange place to air them, but to each thier own.
