Julie et les frères Duguay were a Québécois country music group from some years back. I could find little info on them other than that Julie Daraîche was married to Bernard Duguay, one of the brothers, and that they apparently sold quite a few records in the 1970s. Here they are singing the nicely straightforward and unadorned Prière d’une Mère.

Mark Steyn:
“If Christie Blatchford can’t speak at a publicly-funded Canadian university, taxpayers should withhold every dime that goes to fund these totalitarian sinkholes.”
I think it would be good, too, for universities to expel any student who tries to stop someone else from speaking.
I really don’t know where this will lead to,but it seems that those eco-bags that the eco-elite clutch as they jog from their SUV’s to buy their organics may be toxic. They contain lead.
The worry is not that their tofu will be contaminated, but that the landfills where they eventually end up,will become contaminated.
Now,I don’t know a heck of a lot about garbage dumps, but I would think that they may already be a tad contaminated, and the wildlife which basically consists of rats and feathered rats do not rate high with too many sane people.
However,I’m sure that some enviro group will soon be spending unearned money to study this problem.

Human Rights Tribunal complaint filed by the accused in three, two, one…
Fed Up with the Fed.
“In the century before the Fed’s creation, the purchasing power of the dollar, while subject to the inevitable fluctuations of a market economy, had approximately the same purchasing power in 1914 that it had had in 1814. Since 1914, more than 95% of the dollar’s purchasing power has eroded. Money is supposed to function as a store of value. By that standard, the Fed’s ward, the Federal Reserve Note, has been a miserable failure.”
. . . . . . . . .
“The 1970 amendments to the Federal Reserve Act state that the Fed should “promote effectively the goals of maximum employment, stable prices, and moderate long-term interest rates.” These goals are misguided and unattainable: A) The premise that the central bank can promote employment is erroneous. It is based on a mythical academic theory called the Phillips curve that posits a trade-off between inflation and employment. Unemployment is fundamentally a price problem, not a monetary problem; therefore, unemployment can be cured only by the presence of a free market in wages. Employment is not the responsibility of a central bank.”
Me: Mises said that in a truly free market there is NO involuntary unemployment.
Further to mine of 12:15am, two thin books I can’t recommend highly enough: both by Murray Rothbard, both available at mises.org bookstore:
— The Origins of the Federal Reserve (102 pages)
— The Case Against the Fed (151 pages)
I haven’t read Ron Paul’s End the Fed, but I strongly suspect you will find these two books eminently more valuable.

Dhemmi, you do know that shifts in the phillips curve are caused by adjustments in nominal wages and inflation expectations right? (If I recall my economics correctly which i may not cuz i’m dumb and sleepy). It’s not a strict attribution to money supply. Even if you went back to a gold standard you’d still need a federal reserve to manage you know…..your gold reserves?

“Euro under siege after Portugal hits panic button
The euro is facing an unprecedented crisis after another country indicated that it was at a “high risk” of requiring an international bail-out.
Portugal became the latest European nation to suggest it was on the brink of seeking help from Brussels after Ireland confirmed it had begun preliminary talks over its debt problems.
Greece also disclosed yesterday that its economic problems are even worse than previously thought. Last night, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel raised the spectre of the euro collapsing as she warned: “If the euro fails, then Europe fails.”

“Immigration: Far-right fringe exploits European coalitions
In the first of a series on the politics of immigration in Europe, Ian Traynor reveals how mainstream European parties appear paralysed by populism, unable to halt the rise of the far right
Europe’s mainstream political parties are engaged in a worsening feud over how to deal with the growing power of extreme rightwing anti-immigrant movements. Amid a backlash against immigration that has shaken Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Sweden in recent months, governments of the centre-right or centre-left appear at a loss to counter the appeal of extremist populists who have moved from the madcap fringes of national politics into government, or propping up minority centrist coalitions.
A liberals-led coalition has just taken office in the Netherlands dependent on the parliamentary support of Geert Wilders, Europe’s leading Islam-baiter. In Denmark, another liberals-led government also relies on the anti-immigrant nationalists of the Danish People’s Party for survival. Last week, the DPP won a tightening of the most draconian immigration laws in Europe in return for agreeing to the government’s budget for next year.
Alarmed at the growing appeal of the far right, leaders of the centre-right and centre-left are struggling to form a coherent response. Attempts to construct a cross-party European anti-extremism pact are falling victim to the expediencies of national politics. “This is becoming a very hot political issue,” said a spokesman for the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, a large grouping in the European parliament.”

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/canada/breakingnews/tough-day-for-charest-petition-demanding-resignation-quickly-gets-10000-names-108234469.html
I have read some of the rantings of this fool, Dan Kellar, and his group Always Real Assholes and it sounds like he is on the same page as Suzuki and his ilk with environmentalism and climate change. It is truly sad that Christie Blatchford, a great writer, would make her statement that, “she long ago gave up any hope that universities were the defenders of free expression.” This insanity is underlined by cowards like Liberal Allan Rock of the University of Ottawa shutting down Ann Coulter so this is condoned at the highest level, which is truly dangerous for our society.
Blatchford’s message of how the Ontario Provincial Police failed to defend the basic rights of the citizens of Caledonia is hardly racist as our police forces consistently have failed to enforce the law when faced by any large group, whether its tamils, the Black Block at the G20 or Ipperwash.
It is typical of the left that they shut down free speech, from the Nazis to Islam these groups aren’t interested in challenging your message they simply don’t want you to say or write anything they don’t agree with.

“China’s ‘State Capitalism’ Sparks a Global Backlash”
“BEIJING—Since the end of the Cold War, the world’s powers have generally agreed on the wisdom of letting market competition—more than government planning—shape economic outcomes. China’s national economic strategy is disrupting that consensus, and a look at the ascent of solar-energy magnate Zhu Gongshan explains why.
A shortage of polycrystalline silicon—the main raw material for solar panels—was threatening China’s burgeoning solar-energy industry in 2007. Polysilicon prices soared, hitting $450 a kilogram in 2008, up tenfold in a year. Foreign companies dominated production and were passing those high costs onto China.
Beijing’s response was swift: development of domestic polysilicon supplies was declared a national priority. Money poured in to manufacturers from state-owned companies and banks; local governments expedited approvals for new plants.
In the West, polysilicon plants take years to build, requiring lengthy approvals. Mr. Zhu, an entrepreneur who raised $1 billion for a plant, started production within 15 months. In just a few years, he created one of the world’s biggest polysilicon makers, GCL-Poly Energy Holding Ltd. China’s sovereign-wealth fund bought 20% of GCL-Poly for $710 million. Today, China makes about a quarter of the world’s polysilicon and controls roughly half the global market for finished solar-power equipment.”

Cappy@ 7:52am Petition
Cappy their is a Petition that was started back in Sept.
Now its not for McGuinty to resign but a HST petition, However most that have signed have given comments along with signature and alot call for McGuinty to resign.
http://www.petitionbuzz.com/petitions/nohst/0/1/
their are currently only 938 signatures & i think the person that started this was hoping for this to catch on, and their have been very little talk of it other then in comments of the Toronto Sun.
Or its just another Ontario fact, We lie down like good little dogs & take it again from this Corrupt Liberal Government of McGuinty’s.
maz2 @ 6:54, both items are good news and hopefully the momentum will escalate. Now if only Europe can also start working on fixing their financial woes.

“Obama feeling sorry for self”
“By now it is well known that President Obama has the thinnest of skins when it comes to criticism. But petulance over insufficient adulation takes narcissism to an entirely different level. This is a man wholly unprepared for serious responsibility. He may be able to accept that conservatives fail to admire him, but his incompetence and irresolution are now alienating his constituencies on the left and in the media. While he is good at projecting a calm veneer as Mr. Cool, I strongly suspect that inner turmoil is becoming increasingly difficult for him to manage.
I predict that more and more often we will see little clues to his inner upset slipping out. The man with his finger on the nuclear trigger ought to be a model of calm and stability. Instead, we have a narcissist with a fragile ego and heavy dose of compensatory bravado.”

J. Scott Carpenter and Matthew Levitt, We Must Challenge the Ideology Driving Terrorism
No standardised explanation can account for every case of radicalisation. Yet it is clear that improved integration of immigrant communities and a greater sense of national social cohesion are essential to redressing local grievances and can lower the susceptibility of these communities.
At the same time, it is necessary to challenge and defeat the extremist ideology being peddled by radicalisers: our ultimate adversaries are not those already radicalised but their extremist ideology that propels individuals to wage violent jihad….
Thanks for the reminder, Kate. I never interact with others if I can help it but lately I’ve noticed that it is unusually quiet amongst the more interactive personalities. Just curious.

The push for new Internet surveillance capabilities goes back to 1999, when government officials began crafting proposals to institute new surveillance technologies within Canadian networks along with additional legal powers to access surveillance and subscriber information. The so-called lawful access initiatives stalled in recent years, but my weekly technology law column (Toronto Star version, homepage version) notes that earlier this month the government tabled its latest proposal with three bills (C-50, C-51, C-52) that received only limited attention despite their potential to fundamentally reshape the Internet in Canada.

“A group of demonstrators were booted off Parliament Hill Tuesday after staging a sit-in, while chanting slogans, in the rotunda of the Parliament buildings.
The group of about nine self-proclaimed “climate justice activists” walked into the Parliament buildings and sat down in the rotunda and unfurled a banner from the second floor balcony that read, “If they won’t get to work, we will.”
The protesters — with the Climate Justice Ottawa group — were quickly hauled off by House of Commons security personnel.”
