From director Malcolm Clarke’s short documentary film Alice Dancing Under The Gallows, here’s a look at the world’s oldest Holocaust survivor, the ineffably beautiful Alice Herz-Sommer.

    “A theme that runs with approval throughout Jonathan Alter’s review of recent books on modern ‘liberalism’ is that ‘liberals,’ in contrast to their mindless Cro-Magnon opposites, overflow with ideas.
    “Indeed they do. But these ideas are almost exclusively about how other people should live their lives. These are ideas about how one group of people (the politically successful) should engineer everyone else’s contracts, social relations, diets, habits, and even moral sentiments.

  2. Yes, says Alice, “we are aware of the beauty of life.”
    I was close to tears the whole time. This clip showed us a glimpse of the Divine: God, Music, Love, the strength of the human spirit.
    Alice is right when she talks about her son’s having felt her body next to his, how a child needs his/her mother, and how the mother’s closeness gives the child confidence (something most of our children don’t experience when, en masse, mothers are encouraged to “work outside the home” — something the Left always encourages women to do).
    Thanks for this, EBD; it is a rare treat to see someone as grateful, humble, delightful, talented, and wise as Alice.

  4. I just ordered a few “Alice Dancing…” DVDs.
    At five dollars U.S. per, I can’t think of nicer gifts – and the money goes towards extra footage for the film.

    Mark is absolutely correct yet because he is correct he will and is being constantly attacked by the left and their muslim allies. Notice every time anyone criticizes or even comments on Islam, the homeless, welfare, immigration or refugees they are accused of being racist, bigots, red necks or unfeeling and cruel. If that isn’t enough to shut you up we have Human Rights Tribunals to financially break you!
    My “liberal” friends and acquaintances just hate Palin and the Tea Party as they hate Mike Harris, belittle Rob Ford and despise Harper.
    At my polling booth for Toronto’s recent election I met a retired teacher friend who always has a Liberal sign on her lawn for elections and asked if she was voting for Ford. She sniffed and sneered “As if.” This is exactly what Steyn says in his interview. The choice between cutting spending and bringing our Toronto budget under control or voting to continue the economic slide under leftist Smitherman into oblivion is clear to her and, as we saw, the entire downtown wards as they were solidly left, filled with government employees and those who live off taxpayer’s money.

  27. Regarding desecrating the poppy,this plan to promote the white’peace’poppy is a slap in the face to our forces.

    It is as obtuse as the declaration that ” I support the soldiers but not the mission” so often trumpeted by the simpletons. Their statement says “I support our soldiers until they start acting like soldiers”, Total BS.

    If they want a ‘white poppy’ day,there is 364 other days to choose from,however for maximum attention these ‘morally superior’ egotists are trying to hi-jack Remembrance Day. Shame on them.Why not Sept.11,that date would be more appropriate for this display of ignorance.

    I think it is time we did something along the lines of “showing up to riot” that Kate has espoused here. Perhaps a shot of red spray paint would suffice,do it for those who have given so much.The lefties would certainly appreciate the non-violence of this act,wouldn’t they?

    OTOH,the white poppy does make it easier to avoid these useful idiots.

    Me: Clearly he has the best economics education money can buy and is an extremely well-respected and prolific scholar. And yet, he misunderstands the most basic principles: you can’t borrow your way out of a financial crisis and counterfeiting helps only the counterfeiters and the first receivers of fresh counterfeit cash. Everybody else is fkuced (sic).
    The piece covers how the depression expert Friedman differed from depression expert Bernanke, the former believing that it was due to the failure of the Fed to increase the money supply, the latter due to bank failures.
    Me believes they’re both wrong. Friedman, pied-piper of freedom, hated gold and was an enthusiastic fan of 100% fiat currency, floating freely, and believed the Fed should increase the money supply annually by some fixed ratio, revealing an almost childlike naivety about the political process.
    Bernanke, believing that banks should NOT be allowed to fail, gave us the MOTHER OF ALL MORAL HAZARDS and in effect has nationalized the banking system.
    Me would like to propose a new project: Separation of Money and State.

  35. Alice is already in heaven. What a thoroughly beautiful human being. ’Wise too: “I am richer than other people.”
    The picture of her unblemished beauty as a child made me catch my breath—and then realize that the bent figure in the video, with the wrinkled, spotted, blemished face, eyes shining, was just as—or more—beautiful. It’s the soul that makes a person beautiful. If only our material world could grasp that . . .

  36. Ruby Dhalla is damaged goods, and I hope the CPC has more sense than to accept her into the party. Remember it wasn’t so much her political behavior that brought her into the public eye, but the way she conducted her personal affairs. That is baggage she cannot leave on the Liberal platform at the station.
