… for the thriving power-house of Portugal:
Inexplicably, there’ll be no seat on the United Nations Security Council for Canada, an historic slap in the face for a country doing more than its fair share in the UN-sanctioned Afghanistan conflict, with a long history of UN peacekeeping to its credit.

And the downside is?
Obviously they were swayed by Iggy and his fearmongering tactics. I mean, after all, what would happen if that mean-spirited and angry Stephen Harper got control of the UN Security Council? He’d take over the world!
Reminds me of all the times that Harper got stabbed in the back by Charest. Sucking up to spoiled brats is not good policy.
At this point in time, Harper is the most conservative sitting leader in the G-20, if not the world. Why would a pro-communist organization like the UN not do everything possible to keep him out?
Harper doesn’t EVER do anything without a reason. There is a major strategic purpose behind our getting rebuffed by the UN. As for the ‘voting’, do you think for a moment that the UAE would have denied us airspace if the fix WASN’T in already?
Rejected by the UN.
This is a problem?
If “Harper’s foreign policy” is truly the cause, hurray for him!
We were rejected for a reason. Not being an international eunuch or a power-hungry dictatorship might be the reason.
Fine with me. The UN is a leftards paradise full of corruption, concocted science, misogyny, anti-free speech,Islamic supremacists and Jew haters to boot.
I’m kind of pleased about it. Now we can not be silent about our own National interests when it contradicts the UN position. We also made Iggy and the Canadian Arab Federation happy. Which means they will do something stupid.
Guess the thugs and dictators will just have to get along and ruin all credibility by themselves.
The left will say it damages the view of Canada abroad…they don’t send cheques so who cares.
Tough to be that upset. Who wants to win that popularity contest? And getting sucked in deeper would just make it harder to forget about that third world employment agency.
Excellent news.
Maybe we should pull out of the PeeU.N.? If the long form census got them all wee wee’d up, imagine the liberal panties in a knot, that would create!
If what one does upsets the UN and/or Europeans, then one is doing ‘it’ right.
I could not for the life of me understand why we wanted more of the UN in our lives.
This is already being painted as a black day for Canada – I think not! This is a good day. The more we can do to distance ourselves from that morally bankrupt and corrupt institution, the better off we will be.
Stop the funding now!
cpac has announced reaction from Ignatieff, Rae & Brison a 3pm
Iam sure it will be all Harpers fault from the 3 amigos.
And if you read the comments related to the article at ctv.ca, Of course you all know, Its all Harpers fault.
good this is a perect excuse to get out now is the time the oppotunity is there ….GET OUT NOW!
PAUL IN CALGARY
Someone should start a facebook petition for Canada to get out of the socialist muslim UN.
WE Taxpayers demand that our dollars stop immediatly to fund the UN.
I hope Iffy is happy now
This certainly was no surprise. The MSM, opposition the Arab Council, all dissed this government and with the result every Canadian citizen. We trade and support Israel much to the disdain of the UN membership.
We have given much in lives and money because of our support to the UN. Do you care whether we have a temporay seat or not? I – for one – don’t give a hoot. It is a corrupt organization the off-shoot of the League of Nations and has become just a sounding board for the Muslim nations.
My only wish is that the headquarters would remove itself from America and put up shop in a more favourable country to its’ socialist being; and if the Conservatives ever get a majority it will remove us from their membership list. In other words P*ss on the UN.
I’m saddened. I was hoping Canada would not only get the seat, but that it’d be permanent and come with a veto.
I hold this wish for every country in the world, as for every additional veto on the SC, it gets harder and harder for even the unbelievably stupid academics to think that the UN would hold any legitimacy. If everyone had a veto on the SC, no one would pay the SC or the UN any attention, making the world a better place.
I saw an article in the paper this morning that Lloyd Axworthy was in favour of Canada getting this, so I have to think that us not getting it is a good thing.
Best thing that happened to Canada internationally in a long time.
F$ck the UN. Time to stop wasting blood and treasure so that some dictators and religious fanatics can be happy.
Best thing Harper has done in a long time.
Out of curiosity, just what would happen if Canada unilaterally pulled out of the UN? Is there a down side to this? I mean, when power house countries like the United Arab Emirates start to play silly bugger with Canada’s Minister of Defense by not allowing him to land at Camp Mirage, a Canada-Afghanistan supply stop because Canada isn’t allowing UAE daily service to Canadian destinations, then it is time to make a statement. I’d say screw it and play hardball with these rich SOBs. No need for the UAE to fly into Canada at all.

maybe iggy should be campaigning to head up the european union.
i’ll throw in the first twenty bucks for a one-way plane fare.

The only downside to pulling out is that if we were ever attacked the UN would not send in the States or possilby some other country that always gets ropped in. But then maybe our new military hardware and our military would be on our own shores to possibly heip ourselvs rather than relying on other countries. Could be the reason for focusing on our military.
The CBC is understandably upset — this sets a bad precedent if we walk away from some dysfunctional communist multicultural make-believe empire of patronage.
dolly If Canada were invaded I doubt the US would stand by any more than we would if they were. The UN legitimizes US action but condems it afterwards. Other than the guy in charge I don’t think the US has all that favourable a view of the UN. It is contrary to the principles of the average US citizen I think.
Well that’ll make Iffy happy, his negative press blurbs didn’t help one bit. I’d like to see Canada walk away from the UN and give it a big ole fork off when we leave.
Stephen Harper and John Bolton. Two names that scare the panties off the UN.
Canada has one more reason of many to pull out of the United Nations. We don’t need these corrupt parasites; what do they do for us? The United Nations consists of unelected, unaccountable, self-entitled bureaucrats who spend much time and effort propping up third world banana republics. We have domestic issues much more worthy of attention.
The U.N. should be dismantled; it’s always on the wrong side of every conflict.
Dolly, Canada would still be part of NATO and NORAD so being attacked is not a worry. Besides, have you ever seen the UN go in and make a difference? Iraq might have been called a UN action but if it wasn’t for GWB they would still be talking about sending a stern letter to Saddam and Iraqi soccer players would still be having their soles burnt off.
I cannot get worked up about this being bad news. It is GREAT news to me. The UN is a hotbed of global warming fraudsters and Thug warlords and idiots sucking the West dry. Canada should pull out of it altogether. So should the US. Many there have been saying it for years. And while we are at it, they can get booted out of NY too!-
With our deficit now at 55.6 BILLION I am sure the money saved from funding Haiti and all other needy cries all over the world will save us a bundle. Hooray for Harper and his Conservative views. They work for me. As for the UN, they favour every evil thug and mini thug in the world over decent people. I say get out the RAID and spray these bugs but good!
Aw geez, we’re not the UN’s BFF after all. Oh, the humanity!
This is part of a trend, there was the seal hunt ban, constant attacks on our energy production, and now it’s this.
Just hyper-partisan/corrupt UN at work.
UN-rot in hell.
Just read Iggy’s statement on the loss of a seat and he mentions that Pearson was President of the UN General Assembly, can somebody out there older than myself confirm this or is it just another attempt by the Liberals to re-write history, perhaps Iggy is taking a leaf out of Boob Rae’s book!

I’m most uncomfortable with anything supported by Mr “Soft on power, soft in head” Axworthy…”

It’s amusing to see how easily people here are willing to overlook just how hard the Harper government had been working — publicly, for the past several years — to secure this UN Security Council seat:
“So allow me to say one thing: this Assembly should know that Canada is eligible to serve on the Security Council. If we are elected, we will be ready to serve. And, if called upon to serve on the Security Council, Canada will be informed by these ideals and strive to further them, just as we have striven to implement Security Council resolutions.”
– Stephen Harper, UN General Assembly, 23 September 2010 (pm.gc.ca/eng/media.asp?category=2&featureId=6&pageId=46&id=3672)
Had we won it, then surely the posts here would be along the lines of “Another brilliant display of statesmanship by Our Great Leader — so begins the Conservative-led reformation and rebirth of the UN.”
And had it been a Liberal government who lost the bid — the first ever by the Canadian delegates — then no doubt the tenor of commentary would be “Liberals lead Canada to humiliation on world stage.”
But no, it was the Harper Conservatives who lost, and so instantly arises the partisan post-game rationalizations: Harper purposefully engineered this failure (despite all previous public statements to the contrary)! It’s Igantieff’s fault (because every UN delegate follows the soundbites of all the other 191 country’s Official Opposition leaders)! Who wants to be part of the corrupt UN anyway (other than the Harper Conservatives, as recently as three weeks ago)?!
I’m with Woodporter on this, there is a downside?
Iffy’s comments regarding Canada not deserving the seat is a direct slap in the face to all those who served as Peacekeeprs. Iffy of course has no recollection of our Peacekeeping history because he was busy living in other nations.
Sudan still waiting for the UN.
Meanwhile the Arab Muslims r killing the Afican Christians.
I see no problem here. Maybe an opportunity to short the UN a couple hundred million bucks over the next ten years or so.
“Check is in the mail, dudes.”
They should make John Bolton Czar of all UN bodies!
I would not want be within 2 miles of any member as they blow from high blood pressure. Whoooooeeeeeee!
“Other than the guy in charge I don’t think the US has all that favourable a view of the UN.
Posted by: Speedy”
Speedy, a very solid majority of Americans, which includes me, think as you do. The only thing the UN does efficiently is large-scale graft and corruption. (remember Oil for Food? Literally ten$ of billion$ meant for food and medicines for Iraqis stolen by the UN and Friends.) The UN is mainly a bunch of anti-West third world sh*thole countries who’d rather wallow in self-pity and blame-the-West hatred for their own self-created misery. All the while begging for more Western aid, of course.
In all this, they’re aided and abetted by a bunch of invertebrate UN bureaucrats hell-bent on creating a world government out of the UN. Those people couldn’t pour p*ss out of a boot with the instructions on the bottom and they want to rule the world? That’s both scary and hilarious. To quote Obi-wan Kanobe, “You’ll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.”
“Inexplicably, there’ll be no seat on the United Nations Security Council for Canada, an historic slap in the face for a country doing more than its fair share in the UN-sanctioned Afghanistan conflict, with a long history of UN peacekeeping to its credit.” (see above)
Bullroar.
The corrupt, criminal United Nations is a stinking, fetid sewer; anti-semitic; a purveyor of hate.
The liberal-left belongs there.
Down with the UNaBomber, aka Mo Strong, Canadian “Liberal leader” Liberal MP Bob Rae’s Uncle Mo Stlong.
…-
Who is Mo Strong?

Portugal? This is doubly funny given they are a charter member of the PIGS likely to default on their loans.
Ian Vaughan: “Harper doesn’t EVER do anything without a reason.”
My initial reaction when I read that Canada was rejected and that Portugal had got a seat on the UN Security Council was, I guess Portugal will be easier to push around and Canada should immediately reduce its support of the United Nations given their lack of gratitude for everything Canada’s done for them, especially in the area of peace keeping and more than doing our share in Afstan.
To hell with the UN: they’re UNgrateful, UNcouth, UNdemocratic, UNtruthful, UNethical thugs — and this vote more than proves it. Come to think of it, why would Canada even want to be on the UN Security Council?
What are we to do when uber-Liberal Lloyd says we should be on the council, and hyper-intellectual Ignatieff says we shouldn’t?
Can we put them alone in a room and see if they’ll fight?
Welcome to the monkey house.
The UN: giving a voice to otherwise voiceless dictators and kleptocrats for over 60 years!
Davenport: “Had we won it, then surely the posts here would be along the lines of ‘Another brilliant display of statesmanship by Our Great Leader — so begins the Conservative-led reformation and rebirth of the UN.'”
You’re kidding, right? “Reformation and rebirth of the UN”? I’m ROFLMAO. The UN is beyond reformation and rebirth. It needs to be starved of funds from Western countries and, like dolly says, its headquarters moved to one of the UN’s favoured corrupt kleptocracies, where it would be right at home.
I’m sick and tired of our money being funneled into this rat-infested, thug-run, fleabag of an “organization” run by international dictators.
It was unfortunate that Minister Cannon tried to blame Mr Ignatieff for the result. It looked small on Cannon’s part and appeared to give entirely too much credibility to Ignatieff. Perhaps it might have been best simply to note the government’s disappointment that the Leader of the Opposition would provide support to Canada’s international detractors for his own partisan purposes.
batb said: “The UN is beyond reformation and rebirth…I’m sick and tired of our money being funneled into this rat-infested, thug-run, fleabag of an “organization” run by international dictators.”
Now reconcile that view with the fact that PM Harper was at the UN as recently as a few weeks ago, campaigning hard for a seat on the Council.
