  1. What scientific brilliance; knowing exactly how many people will be born over the next 90 years, how much time they will spend outside, what the UV levels at the surface will be as well as taking into account yet to be invented compounds to prevent UV induced cross-linking of lens proteins (and their cost so that the exact proportion of the population using them can be calculated based on the predicted per-capita income). I’m sure the computer model for cataract prediction is extremely complicated, runs on supercomputers and was probably based on the highly accurate climate models that have done such a wonderful job of weather prediction in 2100. Progressive medical schools are using this data to determine the number of ophthalmologists that are needed over then next 90 years. Isn’t it wonderful that we have organizations such as the EPA to facilitate long term planning.
I’m sure the EPA authors of this report are also hoping that we don’t come up with life extension techniques in the near future as they probably aren’t expecting to be hauled up before a board of inquiry in 2100 to answer for their 2010 predictions.

  2. Maybe I missed my calling and should have been a reporter because none of this makes sense to me.
According to Google the Montreal Protocol came into effect in 1989. The EPA claims it will positively effect Americans born between 1985 and 2100 although ozone levels are not expected to return to pre-1980 levels until 2065.
Additionally, they are claiming to have protected the ozone layer since the 70’s (it is unclear if they mean the 1770’s, 1870’s or 1970’s).
Were I a reporter for say The NYT or The WaPo the only thing that I could conclude is that the EPA is vastly understating the number of Americans they have saved from skin cancer and cataracts.
22 Billion sounds more likely. /sarc

  3. For those of you that might have missed this:
“Stratospheric ozone is not a fixed and finite resource but is constantly created – and destroyed – by solar radiation. – The Antarctic Ozone Anomaly, incorrectly described as “the ozone hole” by the press, is actually a localised seasonal reduction”

  4. All enviro-hysteria and supporting junk science relies on innumeracy for existence. I would mention reporters but I already said hysteria. Good headline Kate.

  5. I’ve seen it all now – peer reviewed predictions/fantasies.
It’s getting pretty bad when the crazy people are running the scientific community.
Now, where in the heck is my dart board?
That reminds me – we have to take the crayons away from Environment Canada.
