Evelyn Beatrice Hall Who?

Also, today’s required reading.
Update: Looks like everyone got what they wanted – submission! Sure glad that’s over, so that moderate Islam can get back to its regular enforcement schedule.
I hope you all enjoyed the spectacle of western world leaders stepping up to display their sharia compliance bona fides as much as I did. “Don’t do it or they’ll hurt us.”
We’re all so much safer for it, yes?
Following is my (slightly edited) emailed response to a friend in media, who remarked privately, “like i said kate..the whole so called principled stand was a hoax”…
I don’t care if Mickey Mouse had sparked the controversy. The issue is the reaction of our political and media betters.
Shameful and frankly, frightening. As one of my commentors just remarked, “Islam has now been officially sanctioned as the most powerful religion on earth and if we offend it they can kill us and we deserve to be killed.”
They should have kept their mouths shut, at the very least. They have an obligation to defend our constitutionally protected rights to freedom of expression.
Instead, they have telegraphed to barbarians – some of whom have the arsenals to do real damage – that they will cow into submission the acts of even the most lowly and unimportant of our citizens to avoid confrontation.
Indeed, the fact that it WAS this fringey pastor who set this international incident off is the most disturbing aspect of all. Unlike the flag burners and bible burners and crucifix defilers that number in the tens of thousands, he did nothing but state an intention. And look at the force they brought down on him to prevent it.

  1. No link?
“Look everyone! I’m burning a koran!
Just kidding! Really it’s just a copy of ‘Catcher in the Rye’. See? But come back next week!”
This is not a request for respect, but a demand for capitulatory submission. And what’s the big deal, anyways? They can burn my bible, ‘Atlas Shrugged’. See if I care. I won’t bomb anyone over it.

  2. I think everyone that disapproves of the mosque being built near ground zero should go down to the site, light a koran on fire, and throw it onto the ground in dispute. Will they be willing to build a mosque on a site where hundreds of their sacred books were burned to ashes?

  3. Psychopathic third worlders:
“If you burn those pieces of paper, I will become extremely angry, riot in the streets, and kill people! And it will be YOUR fault, not mine!”
    President Obama:
    “Okay. You’re right.”

  4. The situation is not unlike a beaten wife who would like to go out with her girlfriends to a movie but she knows that her violent husband will be “angry and offended” if she does so and she is threatened with a beating if she goes. So she stays home instead.
The true test in all of this will be how the Muslim world reacts to the situation. It will be on display for everyone to see the “religion of peace” in action.

  5. I think the whole thing will be cancelled at the last minute. however, there will be violence everywhere in protest by the religion of peace.

  6. We’ve used the term ‘terrorists’ so many times we’ve become tuned out to the inference of terrorising.

  7. McCarthy nails it!! No handwringing, or apologising.
” If the president, who is principally responsible for American national security, actually believes what he says, what is his excuse for not confronting Islamist regimes?

  8. I’d be willing to bet, though, that unlike Andy McCarthy, a fair number of readers here neither see Pastor Jones as “a jackass” nor believe that “burning a book sacred to Muslims is a stupid, provocative thing to do.” Rather, I suspect that they think of him as something of a hero for pulling this stunt (and not in terms of freedom of speech).
But then it comes as no surprise that SDA attracts extremists of its own sort.

  9. Oops…meant to say, your asterisk link doesn’t work Kate, but then accidentally pasted the link you were trying to put up over what I had typed…

  10. US Army burned Bibles written in two languages Afghanis speak. Didn’t want to inflame the flammable I guess.
So we have the US Army burning Bibles and it is so so bad for one guy to burn the Koran. Makes sense now.

  11. But then it comes as no surprise that SDA attracts extremists of its own sort.
Posted by: Davenport at September 9, 2010 3:17 PM
Extremist? For burning a Quran? You gotta be kidding me.

  12. Well let’s see, I’m pretty sure the Catholic church thought Galileo was a “jackass” too. He criticized a rather key piece of what the church believed, to put it mildly.
It does amaze me how many writers have to first make a point of calling the pastor all sorts of names before they then defend what he is doing.
The story here is not that this fellow wants to burn a few Korans, the story is the reaction, which to me suggests we are probably doomed. It would appear we still have not got past religious superstition.
I have many friends whose response can be summarized as “Could we throw a few other religious books on the bonfire while we’re at it.”
Funny thing is if the pastor decided to burn a few copies of the Constitution he wouldn’t even make the back pages of the free newspapers.

  13. If the government really believes that burning korans will cause Muslims to riot and kil,l then the people who practice this ideology are too dangerous to allow into our country.
Either we get to burn korans or the government stops allowing them to immigrate.
The government can’t continue to have it both ways to our disadvantage.

  14. “But then it comes as no surprise that SDA attracts extremists of its own sort.”
At last! The recognition I crave! (Okay, considering the source it’s not much, but it’s a start.)

  15. If this yokol doesnt burn it this time, someone else will next time. Get it over with already its agony waiting.

  16. It doesn’t matter if he burns it or not. The imams will simply SAY that he did. That’s all that matters.

  17. Some interesting information coming to light about the pastor’s previous business plans, apparently this may be largely a last-gasp (I hesitate to say hail Mary) attempt to stave off bankruptcy.
That does put a rather different light on it, an ill-considered publicity stunt to sell some T-shirts dressed up as a major religious happening and from the interviews, almost a mind-numbing inability to grasp consequences.
Such as getting people killed in the actual fighting zone.
Anyway, if I were Rev. Jones, I would be a bit hesitant to go out to the same parking lot next week and sign off on any deliveries from Al J Courier Inc. But he could wear about a dozen of those T-shirts, maybe that would deflect the shock waves.
My final observation on this is to say, anyone who can get President Obama to say something halfway sensible must be a real dull knife indeed; I think this is the first time since he said the dog was cute.

  18. Abe said “I just love it when a shit storm reaches category 4.”
Me too. We should be doing our best to fan the flames on this one. This fight should be taken to the extreme as fast as possible and get it over with. Lets see what everybody is made of and how far they are willing to go.

  19. Jones’s stunt should never have hit the headlines. There are worse things happening daily in the inner core of every big city that never see the light of day vis a vis the media. If Jones and his merry band of incendiaries had been left alone in their tiny corner of Florida, there wouldn’t be a major conflagration about to happen around the world.
    GIVE. ME. A. BREAK.
As McCarthy points out, it’s not the burning of the Koran that’s at the heart of our troubles, it’s Islam and the perennially thin-skinned proponents of said “religion.” (When your women have to wear tents in public because the men can’t be held responsible for their lustful thoughts or worse, you know there’s something rotten at the core.) That the burning of one’s Holy Book would cause one person to vandalize or murder reveals a religion not of peace but of vengeance and violence. Why do we keep defending these guys?
The Christian religion is daily made fun of, ridiculed, and accused of atrocities it’s in no way responsible for. As an artistic expression Jesus has been depicted immersed in urine and called the “Piss Christ” (for which the artist won the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art’s “Awards in the Visual Arts” competition, partially sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, a United States Government agency). Chris Ofili, a British artist and winner of the prestigious Turner Prize, depicted the Blessed Virgin Mary using elephant dung.
As far as I know, no one has been harmed because of the contempt in which the Christian faith has been held in these instances nor when the Bible has been burned and, yet, I’d wager, that practising Christians are just as offended as Muslims when their faith is ridiculed or desecrated. The Bible, however, cautions, “Vengeance is mine, says the Lord,” and “pray for your enemies and for those that hate you.” It doesn’t incite Christians to go on the rampage whenever they’re upset by others’ disdain.
The world has gone crazy when Christians, as regularly happens, are held in contempt and told to shut up while the powers that be defend out-of-control Muslims, plead for their not being offended, and blame everyone else BUT Muslims when they pillage, burn, and murder because their Holy Book has been burned by a few people.
The time is out of joint.
We’ll be told when Muslims riot on 9/11 that they were provoked and that it’s OUR fault. Whiff of sulfur, anyone?

  21. Serious question here;

What is the proper way to dispose of a Koran according to Islam?

Say that a well-intentioned but delusional freind gives me a copy so that I will become enlightened. However after reading some ,I decide that I do not want this book around, and I will not forward it to anyone.

I know that holding a book-b-q is not the answer, similarily flushing it is not right either.I can’t see throwing it out in the trash not being offensive to some. I thought of grinding it up and feeding it to some hogs, which brings up some amusing thoughts. Would that hog now be a holy hog because he has the words of the prophet inside it? Would it be now ‘halal’ and OK for everyone to eat?..I digress, does anyone know the proper way to dispose of one of these books that doesn’t offend ,and doesn’t involve some silly ceremony?

  22. Davenport says:
“But then it comes as no surprise that SDA attracts extremists of its own sort.”
Yes, but SDA extremists aren’t likely to fly planes into buildings, or blowup trains and buses, or strap explosives to their chests and walk into crowded markets with children, or violently riot…

  23. Burning the Koran! Wow, how original? They burned Joan of Arc at the stake, and 600 years later, Quebec and Ontario still don’t get along. I still pray to Jeanne when I want God to bestow pain and mayhem upon my enemy!

  24. If Rev, Jones burns a book, and it turns out to be a copy of “Catcher In The Rye” or “Harry Potter and the Golden Fleece”, Muslims around the world will riot anyway,as it’s the “thought” not the deed that counts in their feeble minds.
Remember the depictions of Mohammed that looked nothing like the other depictions of Mohammed, but caused riots anyway?
I’d bet you could draw a stick man with “Mohammed” written in crayon on it’s head, and there’d be riots.
As for Jones being a “jackass”,who was it that said “bad publicity is better than none,as long as they spell your name right” ? Mae West?
His congregation will probably expand by 50%! Next stop, his own TV show,”The Hour of Outrage” with Rev. Jones.

  25. @ Abe ‘Swine’ Froman
Whew, I thought this would be a category 5 shit storm!
But a category 5 would be when pigs really do fly…so it really is hard to keep up with the Jones’s er ‘Schweinehunde’. 🙂
batb: I would mostly agree…and observe the following aphorism:
“When you conquer your heart, you will have achieved much.”

  26. “But then it comes as no surprise that SDA attracts extremists of its own sort.”
    Like Davenport!
I wonder how many far right or far left extremist blogs or forums Davenport posts on?
He sounds like a subscriber to the Ant-Racist Action Network, Jack Layton’s favourite young thug crazies that go out in masks and beat up anyone they deem as racist.
These clowns are always looking for that Nazi in anyone who may question political correctness and the benefits of multiculturalism. Very messed up.

  27. “No sensible person joins a terrorist organization dedicated to mass murder simply because somebody torches a Koran.”
The writer obviously misses the point, these folks are not sensible. It will be a recruiting bonanza.

  28. The way I see it, if they’re burning somebody else’s Koran, they’re criminals. If they’re burning their own, they may be idiots but like Rauf and company, that’s their right. They’re not Canadians, after all.
Now where’s my jar of urine. I need to submerge a crucifix. Art, you know!

  29. Regardless of whether a Koran is burnt or not Islam will kill westerners & easterners and anyone else who does not submit to Islam – Forever.
The fact that this pastor can and hopefully will publicly burn this Koran is to point out to Islam that it does not have a claim to US sovereignty. It is not legitimized in the eyes of the American public on US soil as a valid ideology or religion to be a part of that community compatible with its laws and constitution. It is not welcome, and no longer will some Americans stand idly by licking Islam’s sandals while it encroaches on their fundamental beliefs, rights and very lives.
It’s about time someone sent a clear message that Islam can understand, that enough is enough. When they react in violent kind as they obviously will, it will send a further message to others that are still too thick to understand the problem.

  30. // No sensible person joins a terrorist organization dedicated to mass murder simply because somebody torches a Koran. //
“No sensible person joins a terrorist organization”, which sort of negates the point MaArthy is trying to make.
// I think everyone that disapproves of the mosque being built near ground zero should go down to the site, light a koran on fire, and throw it onto the ground in dispute. //
    After you, Alphonse.
// Well let’s see, I’m pretty sure the Catholic church thought Galileo was a “jackass” too. //
Some comparison Jones is a wannabe cult leaders, as the title of his book should indicate.
    Or this —
When he arrived in Germany on what he called his “God-sent” mission in 1982, charismatic bible fundamentalist Terry Jones came with a message of hope, promising to show his followers the “riches of the kingdom of God”.
Germany, he said, was “central” to his plans to lead the “Christian awakening of Europe”.
At prayer rallies that were used as recruitment drives, congregations dropped to their knees in worship or danced ecstatically in the aisles, so taken were they by him.
But when Jones left Cologne 26 years later it was as a disgraced preacher who was accused of running a sect-like community with an iron fist, forcing members to give him a percentage of their earnings, making them work for little or no money and causing the breakup of families and friendships. He also faked a title as “Doctor of Theology”, for which he was fined.
As tension mounted ahead of Jones’s plan to burn Qur’ans at his Florida church, it emerged that he had been dismissed by the board of the Christian Community of Cologne in 2008 after years of strife.

  31. As several have pointed out, this is all but a done deal now whether it ever occurs or not thanks largely to the media who decry the activity. A bit of irony there… So we might as well have some fun with it.
I think I’ll open a store dealing exclusively in burned Korans – new AND used!
Call it “Honest Al-Fukwads Smokin Koran Kabin”
And ha a commercial on TV….
“I’m The Koran Man – giving you money for yourrrr book”
I could make bullet and bomb proof clothing from them and make a fortune! I mean, what self-respecting jihadist would should, knife or blow-up someboby wearing Korans!? (I’d better work on a nice neck-guard too)

  32. CBC Newsworld is saying that the burning has been called off. They have a muslim announcing it right now.Channel 15 in Calgary.

  33. More news, the deal is that they won’t build the Ground Zero mosque if the burning is called off. Interesting isn’t it?

  34. “almost a mind-numbing inability to grasp consequences.
Such as getting people killed in the actual fighting zone.”

You’d have to have a numb mind to fail to grasp that the enemy is already maxed out in it’s efforts to inflict casualties on our soldiers in the war zone, being only restricted by lack of capability not lack of motivation or manpower.

  35. It appears he’s called it off. Meanwhile do we have to spell in Qu’ran now? I’m getting my dhimmi orders in order.

  36. Now that the pastor’s 15 minutes of fame are about up, Andrew McCarthy also wrote this about Imam Rauf’s Precious Concern for ‘Our National Security.’

  37. “I’d be willing to bet, though, that unlike Andy McCarthy, a fair number of readers here neither see Pastor Jones as “a jackass” nor believe that “burning a book sacred to Muslims is a stupid, provocative thing to do.” Rather, I suspect that they think of him as something of a hero for pulling this stunt (and not in terms of freedom of speech). Davenport, 3:17
That’s it. Right-wingers honestly condemn a jack-ass, but they’re still ‘extremists’ who don’t really mean what they say — everyone must fit into the stereotypes progressives put them in.
I’m willing to bet that Davenport cheered when that Kenny vs Spenny duo flew the “Jesus Sucks” banner over Toronto. You see, “extremists” are right-wingers who don’t sufficiently condemn after 10 years a rather mild hit back at a religion that killed 3000 people in one day, and has been killing many Christians, Hindus, infidels, etc. before and since. ‘Progressive’, tolerant, wonderful, loving, avante garde, wise, beneficent, knowledgeable liberals are people who enjoy watching a ‘Jesus Sucks’ banner fly over a city full of Christians. It makes them feel so radical, ‘brave’ and ‘speak truth to power’-ish. “Just poked those people who never hit back in the eye again. Woo-hoo! But don’t forget how tolerant and non-bigoted we are, unlike those rubes who would enjoy watching a Koran burn.”

  38. It will be a recruiting bonanza.
    ~john brooks
The 72 virgins and fast track to WhoreHouse Heaven already spur a recruiting bonanza.
If you think that sexually repressed Muslim men of fighting age and physique have foregone those incentives and suddenly get “Jihad syndrome” because some son of a pig/monkey who they are already enticed to kill burns a koran, you have a low double digit IQ.
Our entire way of life is already blaphemous to these people, there really isn’t anything we can do to further motivate them to harm us.
What I’d like to do is to get thinking people to stop treating them with deference simple because they threaten us.
Screw you idiotic appeasers and your chosen Muslim overlords.

  39. If the book burning is cancelled – will Islam call off building the mosque???
If not – every Muslim in the US needs to be deported immediately!
If they have no country to call their own (Muslim prison convert etcetera) a special territory on the Antarctic needs to be built for them to live, never to return to US soil.
Good I’m glad this is all settled and clear cut now.

  40. Of course he submited to the Islamic Supremacists demands, we have no choice our political master’s demand that Islam receive supremacists’ status in the west. Islam has now been officially sanctioned as the most powerful religion on earth and if we offend it they can kill us and we deserve to be killed.
