Interesting to see the vast number of commenters, almost 100%, at the Grope and Flail are against letting this boat land here even pointing out how the Liberals were against redoing the refugee legislation. Maybe there is hope when people get pissed off or frightened enough.
They should be physically barred from setting foot on Canadian soil, and everyone should be interviewed aboard ship (with no lawyers!) to determine how many of these people are legit and how many are scammers. The legit ones can stay. The rest get escorted back out to international waters and told to stay the hell out.
But since our government has no balls, by this time tomorrow I expect we’ll have 500 brand new refugee claimants sponging off our tax dollars for the next 5-10 years.

Not trying to be a cold heartless bastard here but…We, Canadians, cannot solve the problems of the rest of mankind, there is a finite limit to what we can and should do. The past immigration policy for the better part of the past fifty years should have taught us something. Canadians both native born and legal immigrants that came here in the Forties, Fifties and Sixties have worked and paid taxes to make this country what it is today. Today a refugee comming in ‘illegaly’ is entitled to more benefits than a senior citizen that has paid taxes for their whole life, enough is enough!! Its time to make a new start regarding refugee claims and immigration. We have reached a point in time where we are about to tip the scales on our ‘culture’. WE had better wake up and realize where we are headed by being a liberal minded country as is posited in the MSM. We cannot nor should not be the saviour to the world.

On topic, we all know what should happen here, as articulated by Texas Canuck in his first point, or by Ian in NS above.
It’s bad enough the Canadian Supreme Court granted citizen privileges to anybody setting foot on Canadian soil (may a special place in hell be reserved for those specific justices).
But, when there is a way to honour this judgment without breaking it, by stopping the boat out at sea and addressing matters there, and our government can’t or won’t avail themselves of this option, it’s maddening to me as a taxpayer. When we know they’re coming, why in the hell do we wait to take action until they actually hit landfall?
Last I checked, Canada does not have a de jure open border policy. Once an illegal migrant sets foot on Canadian soil however, we have de facto open borders policy by court fiat.

We have seen MPs march in the streets with these same extremist groups and they are not even condemned for it. Apparently the ship will be escorted into Esquimault (the naval base near Victoria) when it arrives in about twelve hours. It has been dawdling along at very slow speeds (which is suspicious in itself) along the west coast of Vancouver Island, last reported near Ucluelet. I would imagine they are under naval escort already. News reports show a cluster of tents on shore (at the naval base) and so processing would happen there.
I also think we need drastic action on the flood of bogus refugees and perhaps even the real ones, from the Somali experience alone we are definitely being hosed and over-run with welfare fraud cases and links to terrorism that can’t help either our country or the country of origin.
The cultural elite seem to have the attitude that their fellow hoser citizens are not good enough and need to be replaced one at a time by adoring third world slave-workers who will gratefully vote Liberal or NDP and otherwise not rock the boat while they turn the country into a socialist paradise. The Liberals, in 2002, set up this new refugee system, where you don’t have to apply for refugee status outside the country (as you do in the US). You can arrive here and instantly claim refugee status – having torn up your passport just as you arrived so that authorities can’t send you back.
Then, again unlike in the US, your status is first ‘assessed’ without any requirement for supportive evidence or credibility, by an appointed refugee officer. It’s obviously a totally subjective opinion for there is no need for evidence just the individual’s claim of ‘suffering’.
Then,the individual is set free while his claim is processed. Application to not set him free but detain him must be approved by an adjudicator. And, again unlike in the US, he is instantly given welfare, housing, medical care and legal assistance.
Why bother to go through immigration processes when you can get welfare benefits – which are not available to immigrant applicants and all kinds of assistance? And if you don’t show up for your hearings – so what?
The Liberals set this up to bring in massive electoral support. These groups were locked into identity politics with the Liberals funding them to stay intact – and vote Liberal. Since most of them go to the three main cities of Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and these are MP seat rich sites, then the Liberals want their votes.
Did you know that our electoral system requires that you are a citizen to vote? Did you know that our actual election polls don’t ask for any evidence of your citizenship? If you aren’t on the registration list then all that is needed is a driver’s licence or medical card – neither of which require citizenship. OR, get this, two official bills, such as a telephone or hydro bill with your name and address on it. Then you can vote. Liberal.
Harper has been trying to clean up this mess. He’s moving the immigration system more to requiring an acknowledgment of Canadian values, but he doesn’t have the majority to deal with this highly profitable – to the Liberals – refugee system.

The SS St. Louis incident bothers me in relation to this boatload of suspect refugees. Hindsight is 20-20 but I feel there are some serious differences here. It’d take a lot more thinking on my part to articulate them fully but I don’t think the Jews on the St. Louis were looking to take advantage of Canadian kindness, for starters, nor were they being sent over by the Haganah to test Canadian resolve towards potential terrorists hiding in the crowd.
