  1. Dalton would make wearing life jackets mandatory….complete with stiff fines and a new tax on life Jackets and marine stuff (sin tax).

  2. Hey what do you want to bet that the next liberal suggestion will be a boat registry with canoes restricted, jetski’s prohibited and houseboats having to have a trigger/key lock.. If it just saves one life..

  3. Sasquatch, The City of Calgary is ahead on this, passing a life jacket bylaw (already a federal law) for rafters within city boundaries.
Calgary is turning into (no fun police)Ontario.

  4. It all comes down to personal responsibility.
A school friend of mine had her mother involved in one of these accidents.
A group of guys got all liquored up, first thing in the morning and stole a boat, taking it for a joy ride. She had stopped her large boat and was cleaning about cabin. She heard the boat approaching at high speed and turned around in time to see the boat slam into the back of her boat. Unable to move fast enough because of the speeding boat launching into the air, the front of the hull struck her in the face, knocking her into the front of her boat. The launched boat flew over and into the lake, sinking. The three young men(could have been four) were thrown from their boat. They were able to swim the few hundred feet to the rocks on the shore, at the west end of the base of Okanagan Lake bridge.
The punks left the scene of the accident and started hitchhiking right there on the bridge. One was arrested shortly, near Vernon, I believe the others were arrested somewhere near Edmonton at a later date.
Meanwhile my friends mother was unconscious in her boat. As it was summertime, there were other boaters nearby and were able to get her out of the boat. She had to have reconstructive facial surgery to try and get her back together again. Having one of the most prominent lawyers for a husband, helped in making sure she was well looked after. Really shook the family up, and those around them as well.
Not enough to change the laws on drinking and boating though!
Not sure what ever happened to the perps. In the real world, those young men should have never been allowed to drive again, never be allowed to hold insurance policies and had to pay for the damages from their labour (forced or otherwise) until the debt was paid off. But that is my opinion.

  5. Already people don’t see the satire for what it is. Pretty soon this will be normal as the news becomes a total farce.
Its just a smidgen away from this parody.
The government know best. We must all supplicate ourselves before it. No man can live on their own, no accident is reckless or just a disaster.

  6. The ways people find to kill themselves will always surpass their imagination to prevent it.

  7. G&M: “In B.C. alone, 16 people have died in boating accidents since 2005.”
Yeah, so what. This week an 18′ boat was found drifting with the motor running in the Alberni Inlet. The owner, a mature, experienced boater was fishing early in the day and thus, probably NOT drinking. What happened? No one knows, but he’s one of the typical drownings – purely a mistake rather than foolhardiness.
Two years ago, my son-in-law lost an employee to drowning on a local lake. A highly experienced fisherman and outdoorsman who overloaded his canoe, so that he didn’t need to make a second trip across the lake.
But apparently we need a marine wing of the RCMP, fully equipped for every detachment anywhere near a body of water. Cost is no object since if even one life is saved……
For myself, I’m on the water 3 or 4 times a week on a 9′ pontoon boat. Electric motor, low speed, extremely stable, never too far from shore and indeed, unsinkable. But I’m supposed to take a boaters course, register and show my papers in the event I’m stopped by police or conservation officers – which in years of fishing, I’ve seen exactly once.
This isn’t exactly the gun registry, but it serves about as much purpose.
You can’t legislate Darwinism out of society.

  8. Another thing I forgot to mention, but which was so very predictable, was the incident yesterday of the 18yr old bull rider who got stepped on by his bull and later died.
I immediately thought of ‘ban teenagers’ bull riding’ in…3, 2. 1…..
And sure enough, the next day, newspapers were quoting ‘influential people’ calling for exactly that.
    Pathetic sheep.

  9. You folks DO realize the video is a joke, right? It is from The Onion – a publication which is pure satire. Try looking it up on GOOGLE, read some of the story lines, come back and read your comments and then call people “pathetic sheep”. Exactly!

  10. Way to provide further evidence that conservatives have difficulty processing satire.
Or that leftists have difficulty clicking the links provided.

  11. Gully, you’re not keeping up with the traffic on Kate’s own info superhighway. Better pull into the slow lane or take the scenic route.
Nobody’s missed that ALL of the Onion’s material is satire and I think that Davenport missed his exit too – if the Onion’s point was really about dunderheaded newscasters, once would do the trick.
No, they are indeed mocking the nanny state and not the messangers. This ain’t McLuhan material.

  12. Well obviously the culprit is George W.
After all he was president while the road was in use….

  13. Seriously – – only the infinite cosmic arrogance of the nanny state technocrat believes they can micro-manage acts of God with legislation.
I mean, it boggles the mind to conceive of an ego that huge and that blind.

  14. Someday all web users will comprehend the purpose of learn and use the active links embedded in web postings effectively……..
    Comic relief…………

  15. SATIRE WARNING: Two great Onion pieces, in the light of recent Gulf events, are here and here.
And the Onion goes after everybody: liberal, conservative, whatever. If you have any ability to laugh at yourself whatever your political or other stripe, it’s a great read.

  16. how many times do eager naive mild mannered doofuses go canoeing on water that still has ice and slush drifting by.
