    I have noticed that expressions of remorse are not recognized as “get out of jail free” cards for armed robbers, murders and other felons by our courts.

    Obama could publicly offer Omar back to Canada. Then the onus would be on the mean Stephan Harper to say “yes” and let him back home. Then Obama’s a hero, Harper’s a meanie and Canadians will pay him severance.

  8. Its a funny headline….but Omar isnt a child soldier. The only definition, and there are many that range from under 14 to under 18, that has been used to actually convict someone in the International Criinal Court was “under 15”. Sorry Omar was 15 and therefore NOT a child soldier.
    Of course if he was a child soldier then I look forward to pursuing his mother for offering her child up as child soldier.
    One way or another there should be a Khadr in prison.

I am sure the NDP, Liberals, public service (?) unions, gays, women’s rights types and other boo hoo whores will jump back onto the “poor Omar is a victim of Bush” bandwagon ASAP so they do not have to discuss the minor ROP administrative error that led to a women being flogged into confessing adultery, flogged for admitting to adultery and being sentenced to death by stoning for good measure. The hypocritical left briefly pays lip service to women being treated as chattel only when they are forced to so. They need to save their strength for protecting murderous people who are part of a murderous group that has declared their murderous intentions toward left wingers, unions, gays and women.     In the old days, anyone killing a battlefield medic was taken care of on the battlefield. Hell even the Hitler Jugend/12thSS respected battlefield medics doing their jobs.

    Omie as a child soldier is pure Leftist bunk, he wasn’t in an army, he was fighting like a punk, tossing grenades at our allied soldiers who were fighting the same scumbags our soldiers are fighting in Afghanistan. As a supposed Canadian, he committed treason just for being on the side of the enemy.
    Out, out damned scum, none of the Khadrs should be allowed to roam free in this country either, they’re not to be trusted, The old lady said on our National TV she would be proud if her sons martyred themselves.

  16. This case has never passed the “smell test” in my opinion. Khadr was most definitely a child soldier, and it is hypocritical to claim otherwise. The legal definition (US)of “illegal combatant” not-withstanding, our coalition forces are capturing Prisoners of War. If it is proven that Khadr did kill the medic (which seems to be fact), then it also seems obvious that it was in the action of combat.
    At the end of WWII the Allies went after NAZI war criminals,the Hitler Youth organization was written off as consisting of mislead young people and were not targeted for prosecution. I would point out that many of those youth saw combat and inflicted casualties on the allied personnel. Omar Khadr is not so very different from a former Hitler youth member.
    The efforts at this point should be in helping Khadr to see that radical Islamic forces are not making the world a better place. He should also have the opportunity to swear on the Koran and to Allah to a life of peace and non-violence.

  18. Medics have clear recognizable red cross insignia. Khadr did not belong to a formal military organization and was a terrorist partisan. The uniform of the Taliban is indistinguishable from that of a Afghan civilian farmer.
    Michael and Osumashi are right. If guilty, let him rot in prison at best or hang as would be proper.

    Loonytunes (Hawkeye) YOUR post fails the sniff test. This is nopthing to do with US law but a matter of International Law—-THE GENEVA PROTOCOLS—-which specify un-uniformed individuals bearing arms on a battlefield as “illegal combatants” subject to summary execution.

    Indiana Homez , I rather doubt Obama would release poor little Omar to Canada (but you never know … the guy is a total moron) , as it would likely cause a firestorm of protest in the US , and I think the great commander-in-chief has enough fires burning which he personally lit , and doesn’t need another one !

  23. Hitler Youth were not generally prosecuted because they weren’t yet members of the armed militia in some out of country company trying to kill the Allies, Hawkeye. Any ‘Hitler youth’ the Germans had to pull into the army the last 18 months or so were soldiers and treated as such. (Although I conject some Allies treated some of those young soldiers a little better) The Hitler youth were at that point very, very young – under 14 from records of the Allies and Nazi army.
    You miss the point. Khadr was in the act of trying to kill members of NATO (as a Canadian citizen). Particularly a medic. Off limits! Maybe Khadr was sick the day the Taliban gave that lesson….
    Khadr is also charged with spying, material support for terrorism, conspiracy and attempted murder. Not just murder. He does not pass your smell test
    If Khadr ever returns to Canada he should be tried for treason. But I do feel sorry for him as he is the product of parents who cared more for a cause than for the gift and life of a son.

  24. Sorry Hawkeye but I can’t agree either. My neighbour at the cottage is an 80 year old German gentleman who was a Hitler youth. This guy loves Canada, flies the flag and thanks his lucky stars every day that he now lives here.
    He considered Hitler youth to be the local equivalent of the Air Cadets, etc. Just kids interested in the military and wanting to serve their country – albeit without a ‘big picture’ view of things. They were also treated a lot worse than poor old Omar when the war ended.
    Kahdr was born and raised to be a murderous Islamic fanatic. There’s a difference.

  26. Sasquatch, In the interest of brevity I labeled the legal definition (illegal combatants)as (US) because they are the prosecuting authority. I am aware that the Geneva Convention stipulates rules of war, but as with all times that laws, rules and regulations are put to paper they will fail to predict changes of technology and circumstance and inevitably come up short to fulfill their desired intention. The Geneva Convention was meant to regulate signatory Nations not an insurgent war. That said, I will concede ignorance on many things and ignorance is a gross thing indeed, but I will not lie I’ll just tell you where my personal sense of justice is pointing me. Bottom line: I think Khadr should be treated the same way the Allies treated Hitler Youth members in 1945,if they weren’t killed outright in battle they were considered “misdirected youth”. They weren’t locked up for a decade.

  27. The Hitler Youth encountered on the battlefield were uniformed combatants integrated into the greater Wehrmacht chain of command. A closer comparison, if one can be made, would be the youths in the Werwolf plan for partisan resistance against the Allies. Werwolf operatives never got anything like Guantanamo. They more often succumbed to acute lead poisoning.

    KevinS is right on the money about the Werwolf crew. They were the unlawful combatants. The Hitler Youth that got themselves conscripted into the Wehrmacht in the final months of the war were simply cannon fodder.

  30. Funny how the Canadian media never mention the last time the government wangled the release of a Khadr from detention.
    In the late 90s, Khadr’s father was caught in Pakistan. He was then a senior member of al-Qaeda. But thanks to the personal intervention of PM Chretien he was released and went on to plan an untold number of murders of innocent people.
    And here we are again, Canadians again pleading for the return of ‘one of their own.’

  31. Hawkeye is out to lunch. Go to a library and read up on the conventions… talk to some German ex-pats who were children when they were drafted and see what they went through. My dad was drafted at 14 (very persuasive recruiting method… go that way and shoot Russians, or stand against the wall and say “hello” to God) and he wound up in a POW camp after the war and was treated just the same as all of the adult soldiers. Why? Because he wore a uniform and thus fell under the Geneva Conventions as a lawful combatant. Khadr is lucky to be alive, because under the rules applying to illegal combatants, he should have been shot upon his capture. Since the Americans have him, an eight foot drop at the end of a rope will have to suffice. The rest of his immediate family should be deported.

It would be better if Omar were made to feed a herd of swine for the rest of his life and made to eat bacon for breakfast, pork chops for lunch and then a nice pork roast for supper–until he passes away from natural causes. Oh and then we should send pics to his mom and family every month just as he’s cutting into that succulent roast.

  34. In times of war, a POW remains in jail until the war is over, and should be treated properly, irregardless of how many Jap Zeroes he’s shot down. War is not over, Khadr stays in jail!!

  37. Briefly visited the Vancouver Sun site and couldn’t believe the number of moonbats posting there; glad I no longer live in Vancouver.
    Agree with Lance that Khadr should be tried for treason although he should have been shot in Afghanistan which would have been a far simpler solution to this problem. The last thing we need is Khadr back in Canada for an expensive trial and why don’t we trade him for Marc Emery? The Americans can keep Khadr and we get Marc back who, unlike the Khadr family, actually pays taxes instead of living on welfare.

    Louise, the recidivism rate for gitmo alumni is roughly 25%. So one of four go back to the battlefield to kill more of our troops.
    That is why gitmo must remain open, until we pull out of the theatres. For the sake of our own troops, if nothing else. Pity the disgusting left never cared enough about the safety of our own soldiers to think of that, rather than whether or not the gitmo sauce bernaise was just a teensy bit overdone for the beseiged inmates.
    Of course, since the detainees aren’t covered by the geneva accords, I’d be just as pleased to see them assume room temperature on the battlefields, and then we don’t need to worry about recidivism. And that includes scum khadr, too: a “child” with a grenade or AK is just as deadly as an adult, and I value our troops’ lives over either.

    We are nearly a third of the way through the Obama presidency. Yet no one – least of all an entirely incurious press – seems at all interested in calling the US administration to account on something that George Dubya would have been relentlessly pilloried for.

    Hitler Youth were not prosecuted because it was just an organization akin to boy scouts. The idea was to condition them to be good nazis willing to go to war when they reached full adulthood.
    The youthful soldiers in Hitlers armies were there primarily because they were drafted against their will. (My 16 yr old uncle was drafted and sent to the Russian front and is still MIA.) Those youthful soldiers weren’t prosecuted for the same reason adult soldiers weren’t prosecuted. They were uniformed soldiers fighting in a national army. The only ones prosecuted were their leaders who were responsible for the crimes against humanity, or those who, on their own volition, committed crimes against humanity.
