  1. Reading through the entire slideshow I was reminded of another thing, that cruelty can be perpetrated in the name of science and reason just as easily as it can be in the name of religion. Ten years ago as a fairly strident secularist I would have refused to believe that. I think the TV show South Park got it right when they had an episode spoofing this Buck Rogers looking future, where society has discarded all religion. But instead of a unified utopia, they fight over which of the various atheist alliances has the proper claim on true atheism. They even use the epithet “Science damn you!” LOL
I think perhaps my more general question is, can humanism truly provide a foundational morality? I have increasingly come around to the belief that morality depends on an acknowledgment of something greater than ourselves, or greater than the sum of humanity. There are certainly examples of atheists who are good and moral people, but what is the foundational basis of their morality? Cultural? And if cultural, is it not then essentially a theistic morality twice-removed?
It is not the case that I have come full circle into theology or something like that. Rather, an increasing observation that secular humanism is in possession of no less smug certitude than religion. It is also failing to provide an effective alternative to the cultural and spiritual vacuum created by the pushing out of the Judeo-Christian heritage. I think this explains much of the West’s decadent, self-absorbed impotence in the face of expansionist Islam. I can’t think of a realistic scenario where Left wing relativism doesn’t lead inexorably to nihilism.

  2. God, Guns, Girls and Dogs. That about does it…oops! Left out Harleys. Now we’re talking relative morality!!

  3. I laughed at this comment
“…the Animal Welfare Act doesn’t even classify birds and rodents as animals….”
How long until we aren’t allowed to buy mouse-traps? 3yrs?

  4. My very loyal Lab never raised her head from the floor during the 5.0 quake. She slept on…so much for her sensing one coming.
    However…
Just turn in the driveway with Tim Horton donut’s and she is up in the window wagging her tail…she can smell them a 1/4 mile away.
Dogs..they really are our best friends.

  5. Kevin, the way I’ve approached it is that you can be moral and an atheist in much the same way that yuo can deny the existence of the North Star and still travel north. It makes it a lot harder and less reliable, but by no means impossible.

  6. As we all know, the only thing better than the cutest cat in the world is any dog 🙂
