Enough Already

61% agree;

Nearly two-thirds of respondents to the Canadian Press-Harris Decima survey – 61 per cent – said they want Justice Jeffrey Oliphant’s inquiry to be the last word on the former prime minister’s dealings with German-Canadian businessman Karlheinz Schreiber.
The poll was conducted just prior to the release Monday of Oliphant’s final report into the affair, which described as “inappropriate” the pair’s financial relationship, as well as Mulroney’s failure to disclose it.

Well, maybe not the last last word.

I want the $16M this waste of time cost taxpayers deducted from the CBC budget.

  1. NDP MP Pat Martin wants Mulroney to pay back the 2Mill.!
So sue him for it & good luck with that chuck.
And while your at it Why not ask about the 40Million from the Liberals? Where is it? Martin is so adament to recover 2mill Why is he not worried about 40Million?

  2. Pat Martin is the kind of guy that can clear a room faster than drunken Pablo, who the CBC has given a pass on his DRUNKEN Drivin not the same kind of driving as he was doing with the CBC twit with a twat there a couple of years back. Hey Pat you moron, this money was PRIVATE money! Not Tax Payers/ Yours and Mine Moneys, you know the kind that Cretin admitted was STOLEN! by the Lieberals. Yea Pat you perpetually indignant dolt, there is a difference, one was given/ the other was stolen!

  3. The NDP and the LIBS believe that all money belongs to their way of thinking.

  4. Actually, I want not only the cost of the Oliphant inquiry, but the cost of all the money the Libranos ever stole deducted from the CBC budget.
Pravda boys and girls outdid themselves this morning in the intro to “the current”, with the suggestion that the “activists” on the “flotilla” were legitimately defending themselves against “pirates”.
Will no one deliver us from these smug, marxist-chic, bastards?

  5. The Leftist obsession with smearing Mulroney will never end. I bet Bob McKewen (sp?) is already carving out the next Airbus installment for The Fifth Estate.

  6. I don’t need Liberal Party dirt flinging to decide my opinion of Brian Mulroney. He’s a Big Government pink underwear progressive, there’s nothing conservative about him, and there was nothing conservative about his regime.
The only good thing about him and his freak show was it was less-bad than Trudeau’s freak show.
If he was crooked with Karlheinz Schreiber, whatever he did was pocket change compared with the two billion dollars for the gun registry and the money outright stolen by the Liberal Party.
If I had my way Mulroney would be sharing a jail cell with Martin, Chretien and Trudeau’s dessicated corpse. Between the lot of them they f-ed up my country so bad I hardly recognize it.
May they all expire in a Canadian public hospital where the nurses don’t answer the call bell.

  7. Well said, Phantom.
    Mulroney wasn’t a conservative.
The CBC calls Mulroney a “Tory” and then calls the CPC “Tories”.
The CBC is going after Mulroney because they want to smear the CPC with “Guilt by Association”.
Ignore the fact that the Conservative Party of Canada is a different party than the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada.

  8. Who will the CBC expend their creative juices on now? Conrad is out of the country and there doesn’t seem to be much else. Oh Oh Conservative appointed GG.

  9. Who gives a damn about this inquiry?
Honestly…who outside of the punditry and Parliament Hill really cares?
Sorry, just have to vent. Just sick to death of this news item.

  10. I want the $16M this waste of time cost taxpayers deducted from the CBC budget.
Nah, I want it deducted from rural conservative welfare bum entitlements.

  11. Oliphant went on, and on, and on about the fact Mulroney didn’t put the money in a bank account. He made it sound as if it’s illegal to keep cash in a safe, or a deposit box. With interest rates at less than 1%, and banks failing, who is he to suggest that it’s not acceptable to keep your money under a mattress?

  12. After they deduct the $16 mil for the “inquiry” then deduct the other $984 mil these useless blood suckers screw us out of.

  13. The problem with Martin’s request is that the award was awarded for the libel of the wording on the letter to the Swiss. His non answer to the question doesnt really change that wording at all. The might have felt more comfortable in pushing back harder, but I suspect this is just lots of puff and steam from allan rock. MBM was economical with the truth, wrongly so, but the government still was dumb in its request.
But remember this all started about Airbus and to date all we know is Air Canada bought good planes, got a better deal than they would have out of Boeing and there isnt any evidence that the decision process, evaluation process or decision makers at air canada were bribed or pressured by others who might have been.
So how long do you have to look before you conclude there was no corruption in that decision.

  14. phantom said, “He’s a Big Government pink underwear progressive, there’s nothing conservative about him, and there was nothing conservative about his regime.
The only good thing about him and his freak show was it was less-bad than Trudeau’s freak show.”
Hardee, har, har! We’re hearing that now about Harper.
In twenty years, will he too be despised in conservative circles for being a pinko commie? Probably, cause he’s on the right track.

  15. lance,
Mulroney had some of the largest majority governments in history.
In his first term, Mulroney invited the press to be the “official opposition” because the parliamentary opposition was that tiny.

  16. Well said Phantom.
Generally Progressive Conservatives, Liberals, NDP are like tweedle dee, tweedle dum and tweedle die. They are basically the same, just the team colours and the spin are different. The end result is almost always the same, more taxes, more bureaucrats and more regulations.

  17. Instead of all of these big expensive public enquiries. Bring back the Grand Jury System. If the Grand Jury finds them guilty, you lay charges and go straight to trial. Canada used to have Grand Juries but Quebec didn’t like it.

  18. The CBC “accidentally” ran a shot of Brian Mulroney while they were talking about elderly prisoners recieving government benefits on their news channel this morning.
They corrected themselves a few minutes later, but I’m sure they all had a good chuckle doing it.

  19. speaking of ‘enough’
    3w.cbc.ca/canada/story/2010/06/01/inmates-old-age-pension-benefits-income-finley.html
when will the politishuns apply the same ‘witholding of unwarranted entitlements’ logic to themselves?

  20. Lance, I don’t like to rain on Harper because he’s my sole alternative to [shudder] Iggy. I’m voting for a CPC majority next time out, because I’m not a doofus like some people seem to be. Incrementalist conservatism is good, so long as we get some increments going here.
But a billion bucks for G-20 summit security? I’m sorry, for that money you phone them all up and tell ’em to make other arrangements. Have it on a Brit aircraft carrier in the Atlantic, it’d be cheaper. Hell, for that kind of money you could almost build an aircraft carrier to hold it on.
To be fair he’s head and shoulders better than Mulroney. No GST rip-off, for example. No Kim Campbell C68 gun theft law. But come on, there’s not a lot to love going on right now, just less to hate than usual.
CPC, take note. You’re p1ssing off your fan base, dudes. I could learn to love a national Wild Rose party really quick. I want my guns back, I want a big freaking tax cut, and I want that tax cut to come out of the CBC’s budget. Pay for the G-20 with the CBC’s annual payout and I’ll call it a wash.

  21. Oliphant went on, and on, and on about the fact Mulroney didn’t put the money in a bank account. He made it sound as if it’s illegal to keep cash in a safe, or a deposit box.     spin spin spin doofus ‘dp’ pusbrain;
what’s unacceptable is mulruin never reported the money on his taxes until years later when it all came out.
he deserves to be in prison, not holding an order of canada medal.
spin spin spin from the caustic blindered right wing.

  22. My ideal solution: Mulroney has to repay the $2M plus gets charged with tax evasion. The Libs can then shut the HELL up and repay their $40M. We take the entire $1B CBC budget and spend it on beer and popcorn for all of Canada (excluding Quebec, which is too “distinct” to qualify) as this is quite likely to produce higher quality journalism than we’re currently seeing.
    Everyone happy now?

  23. Yes, what a waste of time and OUR money. Liberals took millions and billions have been wasted down a black hole of Indian Affairs, Gun Registry and any number og ‘government’ initiatives we have paid for many times over and that does not include bags of TAXPAYER cash out the back door.
Why are the liberals getting off scott free and they insist on spending our millions of tax dollars on this phlegmatic ‘inquiry’. It was clear from Oliphants comments yesterday he could not find ANY evidence of any wrongdoing while Mulroney was PM. And then spent his entire time making it clear he could find no evidence of any wrongdoing either while in the PMO or after, but ‘suspected’ Mulroney and ‘did not find his testimony believable’. This is what passes for an ‘inquiry’??- this is a put up job and if this were a liberal ( example: Chretien who remains out of jail to this day) there would be nothing said and his legacy remains pertinent and important. Just as Clinton plying the playgrounds of the world and making bags of cash instead of cooling his heels in minimum security.

  24. Re my post at the top of the list
I personaly dont give a rats ass if they do sue mulroney to recover the 2mil he got from a prior lawsuit & prior govt.
What i do care about Is Why no-one on the Hill or at Taxpayers or Dem Watch or the MSM have NOT put any consideration at all into Asking When? are we going to Recover the Monies Stolen from Canadian’s in the Biggest Political Robbery of our time. Why is no one questioning this other then on Blogs? Where is the outrage?
No, we in Canada just bendover again & again. And let the Fnnn liberals screw us over & get away with this.

  25. You left off the best option, “I want the CBC disbanded”.
But then, hell, I’m an American, so my opinion on that isn’t real important.

  26. Well, my opinion of Judge Oliphant just went way down, for a couple of reasons.
One, Mulroney would indeed be expected to bank the money and declare it as income if – and ONLY if – it was intended as a payment. That is to say, if he and Sleazeball had actually made a deal. Problem is, here’s Sleazeball pressing this dodgy bag of cash into his hands and talking a mile a minute while saying nothing. No details, no agreement, no details, no quid pro quo, nothing but talk – and oh, yeah, please take this potentially dirty money.
Yes, Mulroney could have just walked away, as we all now know he should have, but just how hard would you find it to walk away from that much money? Given that he didn’t do the wisest thing, what he did was still right: treat the money not as a payment, not even as a loan, but aa a bailment of the cash. It’s still Sleazeball’s money, sitting intact in a safe deposit box, until such time as he makes a real deal or asks for it back. Faulting Mulroney for that is just unrealistic.
And two, it sure looks as if Oliphant never conducted a discovery in his life, because he willingly signed on to one of the lies that Warren Kinsella has been so glibly peddling. He criticized Mulroney for not disclosing his business with Sleazeball, when in fact Mulroney was never asked about it. I’ve read the transcript. I know Kinsella is lying, and it’s a disgrace that Oliphant apparently knows it too, but still attacks Mulroney for not answering a question that he wasn’t asked and shouldn’t have been asked, and that he couldn’t have been compelled to answer if he were.
Look, Oliphant is a reputable judge and he was a reputable criminal counsel, but if this is the best he can do, God help anyone who relied on him in civil litigation. This is an embarassment.

  27. As others have stated, I too want the ad scam money paid back by the libranos. If anyone should be in jail, it’s the Shawinigan Strangler and his merry band of lunatics.
Mulroney/Schrieber is over. Suck it up cbc. If I had my way, you cbc aholes would all be looking for work

  28. ebt,
I am a pretty staunch defender but Oliphant is probably correct, perhaps not legally, but certainly ethically that Mulroney should have answered the question. Oliphant essentially took the Bill Kaplan line, as opposed to the strict legal line. However, Oliphant did point out that references to other relationships were mentioned within the statement of claim.
Anyway, if, as a private citizen this is the worst thing he did people are upset about then this is hardly worth it what happened. It was a weenie/technical defence and its a weenie/technical thing to be slapped for.
What I am interested in is that Mulroney got slapped for agreeing to a job while he was still an MP. Geez, wonder what would happen if we applied that to other PM’s…like Chretien and Martin. Any bets on whether they had promises of jobs lined up before they left their jobs as MP’s, let alone PM’s. I doubt we will see our watchdog press ask that simple and obvious follow up question.
And of course it sure would make one wonder how it applies to MP Derek Lee.
Harper and his office were cleared of “cover ups” which was probably the main reason for the inquiry given the opposition demands. Surprise surprise the opposition got that one wrong as well.
Re the 2 mill….given that the Canadian government libelled Mulroney in accusations regarding Airbus, I dont see any particular reason why Mulroney should pay back the award, which was for costs. Allan Rock should have paid the 2 million for being the idiot who authorized the wording.

  29. ENOUGH, ALREADY!!!!!!!
I’m not a particular fan of Mulroney — after all, he’s a Power Corporation guy — but this was his own money and compared to Jean Chretien and the Librano$ — other Power Corporation guys — the arrangement between Mulroney and Schreiber is PEANUTS.
When the CBC treats the Liberal Cabal with the same “thoroughness” (h-hmmm) as the Conservatives — AND Mulroney was a Red Tory, for crying out loud — then maybe they’ll have just the tiniest bit of credibility.
What’s that about when pigs fly?

  30. Mark Peters: “The Leftist obsession with smearing Mulroney will never end.”
    I think I know why.
The Mulroneys are on the New York and Palm Springs social register. They’re high flyers. Check out the “New York Social Diary” site, and you’ll see Mila and Brian front and centre, especially when it comes to the Palm Springs social scene.

  31. I, like many others so many years ago now,
was happy to learn that the RCMP was investigating Brian Mulroney.
We thought that he’d be too smart to be caught, and we were right.
After that, it’s just throwing money down the toilet.
The Blubb is all excited that the
latest will damage Mulroney’s “standing” or
“reputation” or “legacy”. Well, in most peoples’
eyes, his standing is low, his reputation is bad,
and Stephen Harper, thank God, is erasing whatever
    legacy he had.

  32. Mulroney’s only problem as I can see, is that he’s despised by the left, to the point of fanaticism, and that he’s not a Librano. If Mulroney had been a Librano, a Separatist (Marxist), or a P’er this whole fiasco would have evaporated a long time ago. In fact if Mulroney had been one of the Ass-Red Troika this witch hunt would have never happened in the first place.

  33. Yep.. to all the comments that say this was a waste of time and our money. FIRE THEM ALL at the CBC! And if this is an example of justice coming out of Oliphants mouth…well, that goes a long way toward answering a few vital questions why we have no justice in this country.
Can actually get rid of the CBC? What the freak does the CP party hope to accomplish by keeping them around. They should cancel this G20 and G8 and save us a billion and save us another billion by disbanding the CBC. NOW. Another 2 billion with the removal of the Gun Registry and we are talking some serious cash. In OUR pockets… push for a reduction of the GST ( HST) and some seriously meaningful income tax reductions.
What the hell do we need with hosting G20s and G8’s? … just think …all that hot air is BOUND to cause Gore and Obama a heart attack over the carbon emissions. Ha… there is always a silver lining…

  34. Sigivald @2:57 – hell, I’m a Canadian limey and I’ve got tonnes of opinions about America. Anyway, you are clearly a man of sense.

  35. Let us see now,
Got a call from the conservatives on Sunday, sounds as though they are fundraising. Did not get to that part so it’s an assumption.
Lady came on with the regular spiel about $2B the Liberals blew on the gun registry.
After being asked about the $900K +, for the police in the centre of Canadian universe to watch over hobnobbing politicians, she did not have much to say. Did not even get to $1B+ for the Olympics.
Anyway, the lady was told, there is no contest on who is better, between Liberals and Conservatives so far as blowing other peoples moneys. That was the end of conversation.

  36. Take the CBC budget and send it to Isreal so they can buy more bullets and torpedos…. So next time they get a bunch of shit coming towards their shore they can eliminate it properly and totally.

  37. “Mulrony’s only problem as I can see, is that he’s despised by the left, to the point of fanaticism,”Sean M at June 1, 2010 5:36 PM
Lookie here, despising to the point of fanaticism is standard fare on the left. That is the only way the far left knows how to regard anyone who disagrees with them.
That is why so many on the right insist on owning guns.

  38. Unbelievable that these simple minded trolls think they’re going to score some kind of cred by bashing Mulroney around here!
It was US that finished his political career. And it was Chretien that let him off the hook the first time around by telling the RCMP to drop the case and apologize to Mulroney.
Brian M … should be sued for the settlement money.
If anyone can make a legal case against Mulroney stick then fine go to it.
Neither of these things has anything to do with what a complete waste of time and money this inquiry has been.
Unless of course it leads to the next logical step and we get a criminal investigation for Mulroney and while we are at it …..Chretien.
    Where’s our $40 million?

  39. Oliphant gave Mulroney a pass while he was PM. He
made sure Muldoon went down on the rest of his lies though. I’m sick of the whole thing and hope this is the end of it. Mulroony’s reputation is left in tatters. This is just another example of how politics is done in quebec. It’s all about how much money they can steal. It is a totally corrupt place.

  40. black mumbles
    “”””hell, I’m a Canadian limey””””
I can now rest easy, seeing as you are not one of us tulip choker Canadians:-)))
and this 14 million dollar **inquirey** is some very expensive politicing
we need a way to take those responsible to court to recover that money to the tax payer coffers

  41. Whenever I listen to Mulroney saying his taking the cash was on the up and up I’m immediately reminded of Clinton saying “I have never had sexual relations with Monica Lewinsky”. Did they both skirt around the legalities? Yes. Are they both still scumbuckets? Yes.

  42. If Mulroney were a Liberal or NDP card holder, Kate would care about getting the money back.

  43. mulroney is a crook , he is a quebec crook , and a liberal in tory clothing crook. being a crook is a prerequisite to quebec politics and they have managed to bring it into federal politics.

  44. I concur with The Phantom and Sean.
Mulroney was the real reason for the best political party to ever emerge in Canada, The Reform Party – and the Reform Party gave Canada the best Prime Minister we have ever had; PMSH.
If anyone hear would like to educate themselves on the Mulroney years, just read “This House is not a Home” written by the late Mr. Eric Nielson. Eric defeated Turdo, he shredded the arrogant little weasel every day in the House of Commons while he as leader of the PCs in opposition. Mulroney repaid Mr. Nielson by setting him up in the Sinclair Stephens Affair. I had no admiration for Lyin Brian but he was no where near the crop of crooks that followed his tenure – and the ones that preceded his tenure.
If the Troika want that money they have the numbers to demand it – go for it- then we turn the page and see what the Dippers and Blocheads have to say when we go after the Liberano multi million theft(s). It could prove to be quite entertaining.
    Great comments everyone.

  45. Someone, somewhere,at some time, has to ask the CBC how much they have spent pursuing this matter, and why. FIRE.THEM.ALL.
