  1. You don’t tug on Superman’s cape, you don’t spit into the wind and you don’t go backpacking in Yemen….

  2. Yemen is on our short list of possible locations to celebrate our 35th anniversary. NOT!!!
I notice there is nothing to indicate what race or religion these hikers are.
    mike

  3. I get up every morning with the exiting thought of visiting Yemen.
What gets into the brain of people like this, that they think their invulnerable to harm? Will never have anything bad happen, even if you drop in on the biggest psycho the planet holds?
I mean! Where is any sense of survival?

  4. Maybe when they get released(if?), they can try Iran next, like the nutcases from here did. Stupid does not begin to describe them.

  5. Wonder if they are related to the pinheads who went on a hiking vacation in Iraq and went to the Iran border for a little walk.
    Probably all good little progressives.

  6. Kidnapped while visiting Yemen backpacking? Like I think the only concern will be is if they make it back home…sorry anyone chosing to go to a place like Yemen, of many I could name here, simply should remain there.

  7. Incidents like this one and the three “hikers” in Iran seem so contrived and illogical that you have to start wondering what’s really going on. The Koreans from some Christian cult who showed up to “help” in Afghanistan seemed intent on getting captured by brigands or Taliban and then showing their home government in a bad light trying to secure their release. Not sure if several of them being murdered was helpful to their cause.

  8. Your all being a bit harsh on the tourists. I worked in Yemen for awhile (pre- al Quaeda), and its a very interesting and touristy place – the last vestige of classical Arabia. Kidnapping has been the “custom” there forever but, its rarely fatal, and the odds of being taken aren’t high if you use common sense.

  10. I will only comment on condition of anonymity… that Associated with Terrorists Press guy AHMED AL-HAJ sure knows how to get anonymous info…..

  11. Zog, these tourists probably knew what is the situation in Yemen. They must have known about the warning from State Department saying that :
U.S. citizens who travel to or remain in Yemen despite this warning should exercise caution and take prudent security measures, including maintaining a high level of vigilance, avoiding crowds and demonstrations, keeping a low profile, varying times and routes for all travel, and ensuring travel documents are current. American citizens in Yemen are advised to exercise particular caution at locations frequented by foreigners countrywide, including restaurants and hotels frequented by expatriates
Further, have you noticed that they went to Yemen from Dubai? I would be very surprised if they did not talk with expats or others in Dubai about situation in Yemen.

  12. They’re just taking part in the local customs & culture. When(if) they return they’ll get a book deal out of it.

  13. A friend of my son’s just got back from Namibia. I thought it was a bad idea to go there, but he said it was okay, except for a scary cab ride. He and his brother thought they were in trouble when the driver couldn’t find their hotel. It turned out the guy was just stupid.
He killed some really cool animals, a zebra, a wildebeast, and a dik dik or bok bok, one of those things with really long horns. He said it was a disgusting, filthy place, and all the black people are retarded. It’s good to see young people broadening their horizons, and seeing ancient cultures, firsthand.

  14. I know several people that have done the quick visit to Yemen from Dubai. They’d hire a car driver which always includes someone to ride shot gun with an AK 47. They had an enjoyable time in strange land.
The few tourists that do get “kidnapped” have a much higher survival rate than those that ski out of bounds at Whistler or Cypress. Overall it’s probably less hazardous than white water rafting and you don’t have the nuisance of wearing a helmet and bulky life jacket.

  15. I wonder if that trip is listed on Expedia? Probably got lost on their way to the Al-Qaeda Dude Ranch.

  16. Good thing there’s no Islamic terrorists in Yemen, only “for-profit militants” or “unhappy people with alternative moral codes”, both of unknown motivations.
That’s what Attorney General Eric Holder has assured us all. He can’t even bring himself to say the phrase “Islamic terrorists”. In fact, as far as Obama, Eric & Crew see things, the only terrorists are white Tea Partiers, clinging to their Bibles and guns, and, as the Borg say, resisting assimilation, which is futile.

  17. Maybe the Yemenis can make ‘kidnapping’ part of a rich and vibrant tourist experience in their ancestral homeland..
