  1. I read that last night and I got all Foster Hewitt like.
    He shoots! He SCORES!!!!!!!!

  2. Mexicans? Wouldn’t it make more sense to harvest the flatus released from their steady diet of refried beans? I would respectfully suggest that we could even consider this renewable energy (well, so long as the refritos don’t run out).

  3. Personally I’d pay a lithe and athletic black person to peddle my power generator, not a Mexican. To balance the economics, I’d suggest an African over an African American as it’s likely an Ethiopian could peddle further and will work cheaper. After all, how difficult can it be to convert a distance runner to a cyclist?
    As far as “How many Mexicans will it take to dependably replicate the performance of one Arizona power plant?” goes… I think commenter Agent Smith would have a good idea how much juice you can squeeze from a Mexican.

  4. Couldn’t they just connect them all together in a massive post-apocalyptic style bio-energy plant, as in The Matrix?

  5. Anyways Kate, I thought the joke went “How many Indians does it take…”.
    Answer: n = s
    Where;
    n = # of Indians it takes
    s = Stephen Hawking’s estimation of the number of planets in the universe.

  6. “I am confident that Arizona’s utilities would be happy to take those electrons off your hands.”
    BWAHAHAAAA!!!
    I love Arizona. 🙂
    They should offer to send 450,000 illegals over to LA to peddle the generators for ’em. That’s about how many there are in AZ.

  7. oops, that last one was a little insensitive.
    Where;
    n = # of *First Nations* it takes
    s = Stephen Hawking’s estimation of the number of planets in the universe.
    Fixed:)

  8. Since most on the left are also enviro-wackos, I would be curious to see what they think of their precious Mexican illegals leaving a trashy mess like that….Do they appreciate the environmental damage all of all that trash????

  9. It’s revealing to read the comments at the first link, and see just how many “green-minded” people simply do not have a clue about just how much physical work it takes to generate a useful amount of electrical power. Nor do they have a clue about the conservation laws. (and I’m not talking about shooting ducks out of season)

  10. Wonder how many vegan only Spin classes at the yuppie gyms in Hollywood, San Francisco and Berkeley would be needed to replace the Mexicans?

  11. The answer is quite simple. The human body is approximately a 200 Watt machine, of which 100 W is used for biological functions and 100 W can be used to do work.
    So, peddling bicycles, it takes 10 people to generate 1 kW or 10,000 people to generate 1 MW, or 10 million people to generate 1,000 MW which is the typical output of a nuclear power plant.
    Animal power is simply fuel (sunlight) processed through photosynthesis (agriculture) into power. It’s extremely inefficient, uses enormous amounts of land and is ridiculously labour intensive. Which is why it was abandoned centuries ago.

  12. I’d tell them to go freeze in the dark but it’s actually quite warm in California.

  13. Sounds like Az is fighting back. To LA “talk is cheap…if you want to boycott…go ahead…make my day.” Gets pretty hot in the valley without power to run the AC.

  14. Actually cutting off 25% of LA’s electrical power should make the greenies in California happy. Sell the power to Mexico instead.

  15. I peddle for a three times per week cardio workout of about half hour duration. For me, it’s a rather exertive workout, and I am probably slightly above average in fitness.
    I once calculated the value of one years worth of that energy, if harnessed as electricity, to be about 80 cents.

  16. Using the number from the pedal powered generator linked, if a person was so inclined to generate 80 watts as a full time occupation, at 8 hours per day, and 250 days per year, he could generate about $11 worth of electricity per year. It just goes to show how incredibly cheap our electricity is.

  17. Why cut off the power when it would be easier to charge more money for the power?
    Arizona can get back at them through “services fees”

  18. Okay – here’s a joke:
    A Mexican, an Arab and a beauty from Arizona were having a drink at a bar.
    The Mexican finishes his drink and flings it in the air, takes out his pistol and blows it to smithereens, saying: “In Mexico we have plenty of cheap glasses, no need to re-use the glass.”
    The Arab is impressed and as usual wants to do one better. So he too flings his glass in the air, whips out his AK-47 and blow the glass to bits saying: “In my country we have so much sand we can make plenty of glasses.”
    The Arizona girl cooly finishes her drink, keeps her glass on the counter, whips out her gun and shoots both the Mexican and the Arab.
    She orders another drink and says:
    “In Arizona we have so many illegal immigrants, we don’t have to drink with the same ones twice.”

    problem solving solution not fighting so much

  20. Aren’t peddle power generators suitable for school science fair projects?
    Moving on, if someone, including Obama who has an extraordinarily difficult time having a unified front on Arizona’s new law, can point out how bucking the system is fair to legal residents and immigrants to the US, I’d like to hear it.

  21. It’s got to be one of the most misspelled words in English – it is “pedal” or “pedaling” and NOT “peddle” or “peddling”. Peddling means selling merchandise as in door-to-door sales.
    Otherwise, I agree with the common theme here.

  22. Canada has even more leverage than just oil and ng.
    Disconnecting from the US grid would have the bonus of more reliable electricity…..no more backouts caused by US cascade failures.

  23. So, a peddler, a pedlar, and a pedaler are having a drink at a bar… take it away MariaS.

  24. This isn’t so far fetched, isn’t sherrif Joe down in Arizona making prisoners pedal this kind of bike to power their tv’s? One prisoner was able to keep an old 20 inch black and white going.

  25. P = Output power of plant
    (Typically around 200 Megawatts, 400 for a Nuke)
    N = Number of Mexicans
    (P/4)/80 watts per Mexican = N

  26. If Arizona has the legal right to reduce the power it would be a CA. dream. No need for a SMART meter. A SMARTER meter could be installed on the councils however.

  27. Line the border with tread mill generators so incoming illegals can power the grid – no more energy shortages

  28. Alberta/Sask – take a page out of this Arizona play book. Keep it safe in case the liberanos/Dippers/Blocheads make another run for power in their troika coalition.

  29. Mr G @ 1:54…..
    Think air conditioning…….
    Funny how the shoe is on the other foot, we get all huffy and puffy over ‘our virtueousness’……
    Let ’em have it, Zona!

  30. As an Australian I find this situation both funny and alarming.
    Californians have rubbed every ones nose in the dirt by their superior attitude to green issues. That they import power from dirty coal, yuk. The holier than thou attitude is testament to the many years of green propaganda.
    I have spent a little time in both C.A. and Arizona, the hundreds of itinerant workers, gathering in groups looking for day work, was a real eye opener, as to how many illegals were in these places.
    Arizona certainly has the right to enforce a federal law, as does C.A. have the right to protest, it is a free country.
    Looking in from the outside I would imagine that trade embargoes from C.A. would nullify any and all trade agreements.
    As revenge is best served cold I would wait until the summer and humidity kicks in, in L.A. Then turn off the power, do not turn it on again until C.A. both apologises and passes a law just like yours. In summer time that will happen, very quickly. They are a pampered lot,
