1. Lee (tried to post to CKOM) perhaps you need to be patient. It took a while for my comment to appear. I could only find one comment that offered an attempt at a defense (these people have a right to express their views otherwise what are the soldiers dying for?) My view is that it amounts to an attack on particular students which is unprofessional and should be sanctioned. It should be grounds for dismissal. They will claim they’re attacking a program and taking a moral stance–not attacking the student.No teacher would ever be allowed to pillory a student for some pathetic grandstanding of this type–or indeed for any reason. If this is as far as their stunted sense of ethics takes them, they are unredeemable. What would such a student feel like attending such a school? I agree that any such students should transfer post haste to a more classy institution. Maybe with a military escort.

5. I am pleased to see that so many of the commenters here are not surprised by the quality of at least some members of the academy. That too many citizens are unaware of the deplorable state of our universities—and therefore of what we are subjecting our young adults to—is partly responsible for its perpetuation. We can therefore thank the Regina 16 for having the courage of their convictions that has exposed them for what they are.
   Lest we despair for our universities—and there is more than ample reason for despair—it is particularly noteworthy that U Regina students have shown themselves to be the intellectual and moral superiors of these professors. When asked today by a reporter for the local radio station whether he agreed with the Regina 16’s claim that this scholarship promotes war, he responded, on the spot, by saying (this is a paraphrase)

   It promotes war? No. In order for it to promote war, the scholarship would have to induce someone to go to war so that their death would earn free tuition for their sons and daughters.

   Brilliant rejoinder. Let these students teach their teachers.

    And just so we don’t tar everyone with the same brush, there’s no reason to think that the 16 represent a majority opinion among faculty.

18. The urban centres where the CHRC offices are being closed represent a high percentage of racialized people. In fact, 60 per cent of all racialized people in Canada live in Vancouver, Toronto and Halifax.

So far, several of the rest of the group that I sent my email to are responding with “Sorry, I am on sabbatical”. While I am not a current or past member of the CF, I have had ample opportunity recently to see first hand the difficulties that such families have, and am also aware of some truly unfortunate situations that UBC Dept. of Medicine staff (Professors) are dealing with (on a volunteer basis I might add). I would urge everyone on this UofR committee to go out and make contact with the people who they are targeting instead of promoting policies from a “nice and safe” academic office environment. They might learn something about life. Regards.

24. Sad that any of these relics actually believe that a Ph.D. in, say, Political Studies or International Studies carries any weight to the public anymore,or lends any credibility to their position. 26. I was quite interesting listening to Adler interview young Trevor – the student – this afternoon. Adler asked him what the Professor Webber’s views might be on the Sandanistas and Castro (I wish he’d have mentioned Chavez – but didn’t)and the young student said he thought Webber was supportive of those two examples.
    Trevor also said that he thought Webber would be quite supportive of military action should the cause be one that he would espouse. Trevor so much as said that if the cause was worthy – military means to accomplish the goal was quite ok. It is ok to use “war” in order to help “oppressed people”. And, particularly so if the the enemy was …………. WHO???? THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!!
    As if there was any doubt where Webber and his loonie lefties are coming from.
    Let’s review: The Sandanistas had the support of Webber because the common folk were being oppressed. Terrorist and guerrilla tactics were OK. The cause was right.
    Cubans were oppressed so it was OK for Castro to overthrow the government and murder tens of thousands of people in the aftermath.
    BUT – in Afghanistan – where the Taliban are the oppressors – murdering at will – holding weekly executions in soccer stadiums of women who have ‘transgressed’ the Koran either by uncovering their face, reading a book or some other absolutely blashemeous act – that must be perfectly OK with Webber and his tagalongs.

31. In my earlier post I mentioned that these radicals had the eye and ear of our most impressionable youth. They do – and I went on to say that these students are not critical thinkers. I partially misspoke. Some are and some are not.
    There are those students who are clear and critical thinker who are neither impressed not influenced by the obvious lefty viewpoint of the teacher.
    The problem that many of these “critical” thinkers face is having to cowtow to the prof in order to get passing grades.
    They dare not question in any agressive way any view-point contrary to the prof’s otherwise their papers and exams are graded accordingly.
    Indeed a sad state of affairs.

32. My late brother-in-law was a proud member of the Canadian army for many years, and was a ‘blue beret’ in a lot of places. He didn’t die overseas, but there is serious suspicion among the family that his early death of cancer was related to some of this service (expecially just after the Gulf War in the ’90s). His children were grown by the time he ied, but it would have be reassuring to think that Canadians cared enough to see them through their schooling, should help have been necessary.

    Al-Queda protected by its Taliban supporters attacked our major ally in daylight, murdering 3000 people, including 24 Canadians. The responce was a military mission against the Taliban who controlled Afghanistan at the time. This mission has the full support of the UN, NATO and includes over 40 countries in some capacity. The learned professors choose to see this as a war of imperialism. Note that over half again as many Canadians were murdered on Set 11, as signers to this pathetic letter.
