Y2Kyoto: The Problem With The Built In Solution

Now is the time at SDA when we juxtapose!
We’re Doomed! With the earth’s population growing by around 80 million – a new Germany – each year, the Optimum Population Trust has assembled a distinguished group of experts to discuss the scientific case for lowering global and national populations to environmentally sustainable levels. Speakers include […] Prof. Andrew Watkinson, former director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research…
We’re Doomed!Britain’s Met Office says the world is on a path towards a potential increase in global temperatures of 4 degrees as early as 2060. If this occurs, only about half a billion people out of about 9 billion will survive, according to Professor Kevin Anderson, director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate change …

  1. Do the idiots spouting this crap actually know what idiots they sound like? I wonder how the Africans feel about this, knowing that the EU wants them to cease existing?
Ummmmmm….can I use AGW as a reason to emigrate, because it is killing me?

  2. “We’re doomed!”
So why should we care? Then just accept it…
Your gonna go at some time anyway!
Might as well be happy about it.
Just another “disaster merchant”, next…false profit please.

  3. Only the Master Race will be allowed to live, and the Master Race has the authority to cull the weak and the stupid.

  4. Let me get this straight.
The former director believes that without intervention there will be too many people on the planet so we must act to stop it.
And the current director believes that climate change is going to kill too many people on the planet so we must act to stop it.

  7. We need a mass sterilization program . . . we’ll give the honor of jumping to the front of the queue to the Optimum Population Trust.

  8. Hooray!!!
    This is great news! Right?
Anyways, last year in anticipation of the looming population crisis I called for: Cap’n Babe.
Cap’n Babe is my new program where people from overpopulated countries can pay their “population debt” by purchasing “baby credits” from countries with low reproduction rates.
We can finally tap the untapped resource of the liberal feminist’s uterus.

  9. The common thread is that only immediate, massive government action and oversight can stop what would otherwise be disasterous.
Nothing to see here, move along.

  10. This is just another example that shows the world has too many government employees with too much time on their hands. That is the only real herd that needs culling.

  11. Speaking of juxtapositions, how about the news about the head of the UN climate change panel, Rajendra Pachauri.
Remember him? He’s the one who wrote the definitive Absolutely True report that in fact relied on hearsay, non-scientific opinions and fake data to show that, ah, the Himalayas are melting, that the Netherlands is half under water and so on. Dr. Pachauri refuses to acknowledge the gross errors and unscientific descriptions in that report.
Well, he’s just written a ‘racy’ novel, called ‘Return to Almora’, about someone rather like him and filled with descriptions of his sexual encounters. Oh, and it’s paid for and promoted by BP. British Petroleum. Big Oil.
The Times of London and Fox have it.

  12. This has always been an unspoken theme of the left and its sub group;the agw cultists, mankind(read the western Democracies) must be reduced and destroyed either by economic destruction(cap& trade) or by some unnamed disaster. this would explain the excitement over mainstreaming HIV/AIDS and the H1N1 pandemic neither happened but not for lack of wishfull thinking from the cultists.

  13. It does have a built in solution, but the climate alarmists could never ever admit that the real intent is to eliminate most of mankind. That might upset the Ipso-Reid poll numbers, heh.
It is not about saving the people. Suzuki said, a long time ago, that people are just maggots. It is about saving the planet, not us.
The only way to “save” Gaia is by scaring the people with their imminent death from heat. Makes them obey – and pay green taxes.
aka the only way to ensure the people go to a beautiful afterlife place is by scaring them with the hot place. Makes them obey – and donate.

    Yep! Pretty much!!
Just Copenhagen redeux. Priority given to “wealth transfer” and implementing the NEW WORLD ORDER……with THEM(unelected bureaucrats) in charge of course.
They completely, conveniently ignore that according to their JUNK SCIENCE the tropics temps will remain stable, most warming in higher latitudes–especially the polar regions. Hence no threat to Africa…..in fact the Sahara is shrinking……
Africa’s primary threat is not AIDS or AGW—it is folks like Mugabbe.
They also completely, conveniently ignore that their JUNK SCIENCE has no credibility at all and is a complete fabrication….complete….

  15. These Greenie are right that the world’s population needs to be reduced for the long term health of the planet and humanity.
To accomplish this reduction in the world’s population without genocide, mass starvation or war is to increase the standard of living for all humans on this planet by a substantially amount. It is a proven fact that as the standard of living rises for any society the birth rate fall substantially. The best way to increase the standard of living is to increase the use of fossil fuel usage for economic growth (i.e. building more coal fired power plants, oil refineries, and larger roll for the petrol-chemical industries. )
So while the Greenies are right about a reduction of the world’s population they are dead wrong on how to accomplish this without murderous genocide. A reduction in the use of fossil fuels will guarantee that the world’s will see a major drop in economic growth which will lead to war, genocide and mass starvation.
The best thing for the long term heath of planet earth is much more economic growth, not less! Like it or not, for more economic growth and a clearer environment in the long term means we have to use more fossil fuels in the near term future, not less

Not so. I had the following brilliantly worded comment directed towards me on the board at a recent Lorrie Goldstein article.

Syncrodox, Global change does not just include CO2 or changing climates. It also includes the over population of humans on this earth and the effects it is having on the ecology such as declining resources also. The climate effects will only worsen those effects.

-[Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect works as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray’s case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward-reversing cause and effect. I call these the “wet streets cause rain” stories. Paper’s full of them.
In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story-and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read with renewed interest as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about far-off Palestine than it was about the story you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know.]-

The H1N1 shot was a dry run to test compliance of the masses.
If the H1N1 shot wasn’t a placibo, chances are pretty good the next shot isn’t going to be a placibo or a flu shot.
We live in an age of artificial intelligence.
    An age of robotics.
An age of cloning and the mapping of the human genome.
Most really useful knowledge has already been discovered and most of us peons here are here to serve and supply the other peons.
The elites don’t need 99% of us peons anymore.

  19. Um, folks, we *are* doomed, not because of “climate change”, but because we as a species will proliferate until we’ve exhausted all resources. Although we are very clever primates, I see no reason for us not to follow the usual “bacteria in a jar” lag phase, log phase, plateau, and death. It’s not going to happen in the next few years, but it will eventually, that’s just the way it works.
Consider the game theory of the prisoner’s dilemma. You may choose to be environmentally responsible and sustainable etc, but the guy in the next cell will almost invariably consume whatever he wants to better himself.
We humans have done very well, and figured out many things about the universe beyond our sphere, but our time will have an end.

I’ve stated before that currently we can feed 10 billion people comfortably with current technology today. Today starvation is a political manifest. The worlds population is due to decrease substantially by 2050. These facts are easily acquired, and known throughout the potash industry.
So Deno and those that support the theory the earth is overpopulated:
    a) what is the correct human population for Earth?
    b) can you substantiate your answer, or does it just feel right?

  21. Um, folks, we *are* doomed, not because of “climate change”, but because we as a species will proliferate until we’ve exhausted all resources…yada, yada

It really doesn’t matter anyway if you’re an evolutionist.
Existence never had any point for evolutionists in the first place did it?
    More poor you.
When Thanks Giving comes, who exactly does an evolutionist thank and why?
Fear not, believers, the universe is unfolding as it should.

  22. Sorry EL, I’ll not be taking my philosophy from Agent Smith in the Matrix. I suspect things are not so simple as you suggest. JMO
I think C.Kirk had the right idea. To spread the seed of humanity to “where no man has gone before”.
I reject the premise that there can be too many babies.

  23. Would it be too much to hope that population control advocates will aspire for social justice and ensure the dwindling population of white people is protected?
Surely white people are to Polar Bears what Asians are to gophers in the overall scheme of population ratios, aren’t they?

  24. We should do what our forefathers did to combat this problem…

“””Most really useful knowledge has already been discovered and most of us peons here are here to serve and supply the other peons.”””
that statement has been made so many times over the years by so many that I thought that most reasonably intelligent folks alive today would NOT be dumb enough to repeat it:-)))

  27. Population Capo’s. This is the masturbatory dream of every environmentalist. Except their never at the end of the death stick they so blithely use on all other humanity.
Isn’t it quaint that from the sierra Club to the EPA. They all have the the same figure for the World population of choice. Half a billion.
    Its so convenient.

  28. If “decimation” is taking out 1 in 10, would “global governance” cover the 8.5 in 9 trick?

  29. Well, GYM @ 6:33 PM, I don’t believe it(about the useful knowledge) but I think the hands behind the Climate Crisis do believe it.
It’s a good explanation for why they are trying to deep 6 our way of life, and the development of technology and the credibility of science along with it.

  30. The system is perfeectly designed. If CO2 levels get too high, plants grow faster, use more CO2, levels drop, plants grow slower.etc. If populations get too high food supplies deplete, or disease happens or????, populations drop. We can only hope the climate scientists go first. The only thing more certain than death and taxes is that somebody will forecast catastrophy if there’s a buck in it.

  31. How does the optimal population trust derive its numbers? Another super duper computer model programmed to spit out numbers that prove the theory and exclude opposing outcomes, like an IPCC report.
The sustainable population nuts are quite a few degrees creepier than the carbon rationers. The carbon market is basically a money making venture while the population cullers are truly ghoulish.

  32. E.L. repeats one of the common mantras, that of the static world. That’s one of the things about technological advancement, we can now use things that were previously useless or even harmful (most radioactives, for example) and use them to replace heavy land-use or sweat-equity items. I like having my power to heat my home come from gas and electric supplies that are a long ways from my house, it’s a lot easier than gathering wood was when I was young, and my grandparents had it much worse: they didn’t have chainsaws!
If we were trying to live off of free solar and wind power (ie old stone age) there’s no way the planet could support current population. And if we keep holding back those who want to improve their own situation by becoming rich making the next automobile/electric light/refrigerator/widget-ma-callit then we’re never going to get to the point where the rare earths and radioactives are mined and refined off earth. As societies grow richer they demand cleaner production and living standards. Stepping down global production therefore means, IMHO, convincing or forcing people to have shorter and dirtier lives.
Stop limiting the rest of us!

  33. So four degrees is going to kill most of us? I feel fortunate to have survived the last 12 hours since the temperature this morning was 4C and it’s now 8C. Oh, the humanity!

  34. I’m surprised that these chuckleheads haven’t given Osama a nice Nobel Prize for his “population control” measures on Sept 11…

  35. “what is the correct human population for Earth? ”
Who the hell knows what the right number of humans on this planet is!
All I know is the earth is a closed system that has finite resources so finding some kind of population limit will have to happen sooner or later.
I would rather it happen with without the left’s zeal for killing people. Increasing economic growth in the poorest places on earth will bring down the birthrate in those poor regions and will eventual stabilize the earths human population. Will it stabilize at 7 billion, 10 billion of 12 billion, I don’t know but I do know if the population does not begin to stabilize soon some leftist dictator will do it for us and they won’t care how they decrease what they consider the surplus population.
    Deno

  36. Deno, somehow I think that this will work itself out at some point in a process that the earth has experienced before. You pick the process, as long as it isn’t the methods used by First Secretaries Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot and Chancellor Hitler, et al.
Somehow though, I suspect that the current crop of ”
world joy bringers” will ultimately resort to the same methods.

  37. Zeno – please see my above regarding the fallacy of a static world. The “static resources” aren’t… we’re now mining deposits of most ores that once would have been considered waste. Also, a side question – why do you limit us to this one world? In the same way that the home valley/region/continent was once a limit, do you think that it will always be a limit, or do we have the capacity to grow?

  38. I’ve always said that I don’t understand the environmentalists insistence that we “solve” this problem
Looking at it cynically they say that the world is overpopulated that all these people are using up the worlds resources with thier evil technology and poluting the planet.
Globla warming is going to be the result leaving millions dead.
    and I say…problem solved !
The Earth is a self correcting system, but not a moral agent. It will fix the problem on its own.
