All that needs to be said….

….about Canada capturing foreign nationals in a foreign nation can be summed up in three clauses:

  • Release them,
  • Hand them over,
  • Create a Canadian POW Camp in Canada.

Pick one.

The fuss is about certain media reps trying their best to help the Opposition knock off Harper and his Conservatives.
Anyone with decency would not be banging this particular faux controversy drum.

  2. chutzpahticular, that is exactly what this Afghan torture thing is all about. The Liberals couldn’t care less about Taliban prisoners and will do and say anything to get back into power and the Dippers want to take the place of the Liberals.

  3. It’s so nice not getting any news from the MSM as I no longer get enraged by trivialities. This is the first I’ve heard of this issue and I really wonder why it is getting as much attention as people on this thread have noted when the real issue is climategate. Finally I have an explanation of the headline that I read in one of the papers when I glanced at it a few weeks back: “In Afghanistan beatings not considered torture”. I puzzled over that one for a while; when I used to kickbox a group of us would pound the crap out of each other 3-4 times/week and consider it fun.
As far as what Canadian soldiers should do with illegal combatents in Afghanistan, I think they should scrupulously follow the Geneva convention in this regard.

  4. Ken, exactly. One can usually tell when a journalist is personally invested in spinning the direction of “news.”

  5. Combatants who are not in ‘uniform’ during war and are engaged in hostilities may be executed on the spot.
Any combatant needs to wear something that clearly identifies him/herself as a combatant who subscribes to one or the other ‘sides’.
I suggest hunter orange caps for the Taleban. Orange caps look real spiffy with beards and the Sky Blue burkas go all atwitter at the sight.

  6. I don’t believe this is gaining any traction at all, beyond Mansbridge’s pout and Robertson’s lifted eyebrow, except for hard core dippers and lap dog libranos. Most of us would also like to knock a few of these a$$holes around. After that, we could start on the Taliban. Pa dum bum!

  7. This is just another example of how disconnected the Liberals are from the average Canadian. The liberals glom onto issues that NO ONE cares about, this Afghan Detainee TORTURE!!!!!! B.S. -hey,being slapped with a shoe and called a bad name is NOT torture…Besides these prisoners were Taliban fighters with C4 or gunshot residue on their hands….They were mistreated by their own people SO WHAT!…And the other great liberal miscalculation is their stance on OMAR KHADR our Toronto-born Al-queda terrorist…Why has this thug become the darling of the Liberal Party and the sycophantic media?
The facts state that Khadr was sent (by his parents ) to Afghanistan to further his JIHADIST training and got caught in a firefight with American forces(our allies)and threw a grenade that killed an American medic (Christopher Speer-he doesn’t get the respect that Khadr gets)
One could go through all the facts about Khadr’s family their terrorist sympathies, actions etc. But the media continues to paint this thug as a innocent victim of the NEO-CONS, his own family or any other such boogymen that the uninformed public swallows through their media hype…
The Americans have made the choice to try Khadr by Military Commission and the sooner the better. The sooner Khadr can start serving his sentence ,the sooner he will be set free…My wish is that in the near future, Canadians when asked about Omar Khadr ,will answer “Omar Who?”.
Khadr’s fifteen minutes of fame have stretched out to seven years ,thanks to our left leaning media. He can and will rot in a jail cell,I simply DON’T CARE!

  8. “Perhaps the problem is that Afghanistan tortures people.”
Perhaps the problem is that everybody knows that. The problem is the kangaroo koalition kommittee types are, despite their ridiculous Harper was obfuscating claims, the ones putting our troops in danger and trying to dimimish our international reputation.
The problem for the koalition (which they surely are on this issue) is that is doesn’t get them a single vote.
I spent a couple of hours talking to a recent returnee from Afghanistan (he helped train the Afthan military). I now know more about this subject than the entire MSM and koalition will ever know (even thought latter should know better).
Luckily, the guys and gals in/from Afghanistan aren’t following the press on this. When I told my friend about it he was surprised, noting that 99% of all detainess are held for less than 10 minutes and then let go.
Total BS coming from the chatterers IMO.
