The Hadley Climate Research Unit has been hacked;
An unknown person put postings on some climate skeptic websites that advertsied an FTP file on a Russian FTP server, here is the message that was placed on the Air Vent today:
We feel that climate science is, in the current situation, too important to be kept under wraps. We hereby release a random selection of correspondence, code, and documents
The file was large, about 61 megabytes, containing hundreds of files.
It contained data, code, and emails from Phil Jones at CRU to and from many people.
I’ve seen the file, it appears to be genuine and from CRU. Others who have seen it concur- it appears genuine. There are so many files it appears unlikely that it is a hoax. The effort would be too great.
Here is some of the emails just posted at Climate Audit on this thread: http://www.climateaudit.org/?p=7801#comments
Yowza.

Update
The director of Britain’s leading Climate Research Unit, Phil Jones, has told Investigate magazine’s TGIF Edition tonight that his organization has been hacked, and the data flying all over the internet appears to be genuine.
In an exclusive interview, Jones told TGIF, “It was a hacker. We were aware of this about three or four days ago that someone had hacked into our system and taken and copied loads of data files and emails.”
“Have you alerted police”
“Not yet. We were not aware of what had been taken.”
Jones says he was first tipped off to the security breach by colleagues at the website RealClimate.
“Real Climate were given information, but took it down off their site and told me they would send it across to me. They didn’t do that. I only found out it had been released five minutes ago.”
TGIF asked Jones about the controversial email discussing “hiding the decline”, and Jones explained what he was trying to say….
James Delingpole of the Telegraph (UK) – “If you own any shares in alternative energy companies I should start dumping them NOW.”
These emails are damning stuff, suggesting collusion, conspiracy, and suppression and manipulation of data on the part of leading “climate” scientists. Read Andrew Bolt for some of the highlights.
Lots at Climate Depot, too.
Climate Audit is still being slammed, so you may have a lot of trouble getting in there.

Hope you don’t mind a question on another topic. What happened to the Canadian woman who joined the Taliban (can’t remember her name) who was shown in a video stating that she would be killed if Canada did not send money right away?

[…I’m afraid that Illiquid Assets, 11:07 a.m., has accurately summed up the probable non-reaction.]
Yet too many VIPs in harms way.
Never-the-less the damage is done regardless official action.
This implicates Hadley CRU, GISS, the IPCC etc. and as well as the alarmist industry in general.
Is this an inside event—a conspirator who got religion, a jihadi, or a mole (Mossad, CIA, MI5-6, KGB or just a fragile soul with a personal crisis.
This has greater import than Watergate, or the detection/defection of McLean/Philby/Burgess…not just individuals but administrations are affected.
This is BIG.
Al Gore is now in charge of the “Anthropogenic dung-heap”.
PS. And he’s selling shares in it!
Buy Low Smell High.
It is simply fascinating to see that the high priests at realclimate.org are utterly silent. This tells you something.
Not a peep from them as of 9:00 AM PST this morning.
It reminds me of the quartet playing on the deck of the Titanic while it sank (although that group of musicians were a much more honourable bunch).
Honestly, I hope all these charlatans and their preachers (Gore, etc.) eventually rot in hell. They have severely damaged the reputation of good science, and they have willingly perpetrated one of the greatest frauds ever on mankind, driven by their lust for a new world order.
These emails and data might not be the final nail in their coffin, but they are a huge step forward in putting these crooks out of business once and for all.
Science will never return to being an honest profession until it rids itself of the hideous left-wing cancer that has infected it over the last 50 years.
Phantom, yes, Mr. Cross is conspicuous by his absence, isn’t he.

comments:
Professor Michael E Mann, director of Pennsylvania State University’s Earth System Science Centre and a regular contributor to the popular climate science blog Real Climate, is another prominent climatologist who features in many of the email exchanges. Mann said: “I’m simply not going to comment on the content of illegally obtained emails. However, I will say this: both their theft and, I believe, any reproduction of the emails that were obtained on public websites, etc, constitutes serious criminal activity. I’m hoping that the perpetrators and their facilitators will be tracked down and prosecuted to the fullest extent the law allows.”
I was wondering if the theft of not genuine emails would constitute criminal activity that Mr. Mann would like to have tracked down?

I think we can assume the material that is causing all this buzz is genuine and that we should stop referring to the provider of this material as a hacker and start calling him/her a WHISTLEBLOWER for the sake of protection and to gain public certitude about the contents of the material.
Remember – no media, no AGW scam.
So who is the real guilty party here?
LC Bennet @ 8:07: “it was deliberately deceiving the public (via the media) to achieve political goals.”
==========================
I’m not sure it’s as much for political ends as it is to cover their own asses. After all, their reputations are at stake and they’ve collectively scammed governments and granting agencies out of millions.
Exactly, OZ. He/she is a whistle blower. I’d recommend the Nobel Prize for him if that institution wasn’t so badly tainted. Maybe Al Gore should be made to surrender his, too.
Just as expected coverage from the BBC is pathetic.

According to them the story is just a simple case of an organization’s email system being “hacked”. No mention of the thousands of other files, code, statistics, etc. How anyone can still call this the work of “hackers” is beyond me! The released information was much to selective. It was an inside or professional job for sure, not some mischievous kid hopped up on Red Bull in mama’s basement as they subtly imply.
No. CRUaquiddick or Hackaquiddick.
“It was an inside or professional job for sure, not some mischievous kid hopped up on Red Bull in mama’s basement as they subtly imply.”
Ha!
Of course, it doesn’t actually matter WHO did the “hacking”; it’s the hacked material itself which is the issue.
No. CRUaquiddick or Hackaquiddick.
~andycanuck
I think it should be named after a hoax.
An earlier UK scientific hoax was called Piltdown Man.
I think this AGW one should be called Meltdown Mann.
Oz,I wonder if everyone who has downloaded the file and hosting it as a bit torrent is willing to take Professor Mann’s threat seriously.
The ‘Jones(town) Academic Immolation’ – hot’nough for ya?
Oz:
Now, you’re onto something.
Political fraud disguised as science is not a new phenomenon.
The Piltdown Man was, in fact, a search for the missing link used to support the politicization of Darwin’s Theories.
That politization directly led to those wonderful ‘progressive’ political movements of the early 20th century who were so disrespectful of dissenting opinion.
It’s time to purify the scientific community by defunding and throwing out the fraudsters. And, the only place these elitist scam artists get funding is from the taxpayer
“Of course, it doesn’t actually matter WHO did the “hacking”; it’s the hacked material itself which is the issue. ”
I just think “hacked” is the wrong term here and an attempt to minimize the whole affair.
qwerty1,
INTERPOL has no teeth, it’s a joke and always has been.
Besides, there is plenty of whistleblower legislation to protect people and this information is all publicly funded data.
The more screaming, investigating, and probing that ensues the more the focus will be on the content of the data involved.
Beer and popcorn time!
What, no posts by T or new yet?
They’re slipping.
As for the ‘hacker’: Whistleblower, you mean. I wouldn’t exactly call it a ‘hack’ if it was an internal job.
Perhaps, Louise, but the scientists had ample opportunity to change course once the observed data conflicted with the theory and/or the political consequences of their theory became clear. The scientists response to FOI requests and their alleged data ‘fudging’ was highly unscientific so I would not rule out political interference.
As an aside, if these e-mails derail the AGW gravy train someone should warn the CRU team to stay out of helicopters and the top floor staircase at the UN.
Steve McIntyre at Climate Audit confirms that the e-mails in the exposed data files that he sent to Hadley CRU are genuinely from him.
This is real, people.

THis time I am putting my faith in at least two MSM journalists as the accuracy or validity of the scientists’ dodgy information emerges.
Both Lorne Gunter and Lorrie Goldstein have shown interest in the AGW / Cap and Trade issues in the past, I am confident they will follow this story aggressively.
And I hope “whistleblower” will stick, for the leak.
OZ: “An earlier UK scientific hoax was called Piltdown Man.
I think this AGW one should be called Meltdown Mann.”
===================
It also reminds me of Watergate, as far as the scale of the deceit goes.
Joe, you can bet Lawrence Solomon will be all over this, too.
As a long time anti-AGWist, after checking the emails, documents, and software code, all I could say to myself last night was “How sweet it is!” as said by Jackie Gleason so many times.
Davidian Scarezuki, back in the later 1980s, said that the sea-level would rise by a meter by the turn of the century. So I did my simple math homework from the available data at the time, tuned in to John Daly (RIP) and wrote so much on so many blogs (not called blogs then).
In the later 1990s, when trying to explain to colleagues why AGW is nonsense, a rather well-known scientist stood up, came over, and actually punched me. The place went deathly silent as this fellow (his face a sort of red/purple/blue) stormed out of the room. How sad it was.
But, as somebody across the pond said a few years back — when it comes to matters as important as global-warming, truth is not important.
Alas, the MSM will echo that sentiment into their silent bull-horns.
No matter how “sweet it is” to us, the small dead animals who are starting to come to life.
So it begins , Real Climates response . What a steaming pile of crap .
There is a new dangererous source of global warming: right now Chairman Mo, Saint Al and Dr. Fruitflies heads are exploding!
Whoops, forgot to add:
When are the lawsuits going to start flying!!
And no, the MSM will do nothing to report this and will do their best to cover it up at the behest of Boss Soros and Chairman Mo
We should ask Real Climate what they think. Of course our comments will be moderated into invisibility but it will irritate them.
CRUgate questions making it on to the CBC’s Gore/Suzuki forum .
If there are lots the Ceeb can’t ignore it.
Piltdown/Meltdown Mann
Very good, Oz. There are several good shots at Mann’s name in the WUWT comments too (or at least from around 11:00 when I was last there).
There are indeed, a few worthy MSM Journalists, who have been exposing the scam – Lorrie Goldstein, Peter Foster, Lorne Gunter, Lawrence Solomon to name a few.
But even at those media orgs, the editors and most others still push the scam.
I’m all for exposing this GW cr*p.
But WRT (with respect to) the hacker(s)IP address(es), can’t they be traced thru cache etc?
I recall some on the Left getting caught through such means after they lurked and posted odious material on conservative sites.
I suppose if the hacker(s) were smart enough to compromise CRU, then they were probably astute enough to leave no trace.
Concerning Real Climate; I went and read the posting on there and commented as follows. ** Note the timestamps

“Clearly no-one would have gone to this trouble if the academic object of study was the mating habits of European butterflies.”
That depends on whether or not people were trying to re-order the global economy on the basis of those butterfly studies. And whether or not some folks had tried to substitute the odd moth in order to “hide the decline.”
My comment is “awaiting moderation”

I hate to always harp on the graphics, but one of the time series Jones et al are talking about, with the data “added in”, might be useful here.
And, having read a couple hundred of the emails, that does seem to be the worst they’ve got. Even the “mocking the dead denier” thing seems based on misreading the email in question.

RC, thank you for this even-handed explanation…
Moments to Remember
By the CRU Cuts
The day our faces wore a frown
The day they tore our theory down
We will have these moments to remember
The secret talks were so much fun
The global scam we almost won
We will have these moments to remember
Though climate’s always summer
cause winter disappears
The E-mails we were glad to share
Will echo through the years
When hot, hot nights and hotter days
Have found us gone our separate ways
We will have these moments to remember
(The polar caps where we’d go)
(And somehow never see the snow)
We will have these moments to remember
LOL!! I hadn’t noticed you had spelled it Meltdown Mann. That’s hilarious.

sf, do you suppose that’s code for “I’ve been fired”?
I agree with Kate, these emails are damning stuff.
I have reviewed papers for journals for many years, and have had over 20 of my own publications peer reviewed in respected journals (IEEE journals for example).
As someone who understands the peer review process I can tell you that reading some of the emails makes me cringe.
It would not be as big a scandal if these jokers were colluding in some obscure field in order to artificially prop up each others research (that has been known to happen too).
But what makes it a scandal is that these jokers are working on “science” that is being used to decide policy for the world’s major economies, and policy on how billions of dollars of hard earned tax dollars will be spent.
They should be ashamed of themselves.
Members of the global warming religion are fond of calling those who question their motives and claims “deniers”.
Well, after reading their posting on http://www.realclimate.org/ regarding the hack, I believe we are correct in calling them deniers.
This gives our timid, CINO government a reason to stand up like men (or women) in Copenhagen and propose an end to this ongoing circus, but will they take it?
Probably not unless the furore expands to major proportions and they can position themselves with the skeptics without harming their polling numbers.
I think they could have done that before now, but as with the Section 13 issue, they lack the basic cojones to try anything more daring than tax cuts and patriotic displays.
So what’s it going to be, more kowtowing to China, or responsible government for democratic societies?

Phil,
Here are some speculations on correcting SSTs to partly explain the 1940s warming blip. If you look at the attached plot you will see that theland also shows the 1940s blip (as I’m sure you know).
So, if we could reduce the ocean blip by, say, 0.15 degC, then this would be significant for the global mean – but we’d still have to explain the land blip. I’ve chosen 0.15 here deliberately. This still leaves an ocean blip, and i think one needs to have some form of ocean blip to explain the land blip (via either some common forcing, or ocean forcing land, or vice versa, or all of these). When you look at other blips, the land blips are 1.5 to 2 times (roughly) the ocean blips—higher sensitivity plus thermal inertia effects. My 0.15 adjustment leaves things consistent with this, so you can see where I am coming from.
Removing ENSO does not affect this.
It would be good to remove at least part of the 1940s blip, but we are still left with “why the blip”.
Let me go further. If you look at NH vs SH and the aerosol effect (qualitatively or with MAGICC) then with a reduced ocean blip we get continuous warming in the SH, and a cooling in the NH—just as one would expect with mainly NH aerosols.
The other interesting thing is (as Foukal et al. note – from MAGICC) that the 1910-40 warming cannot be solar. The Sun can get at most 10% of this with Wang et al solar, less with Foukal solar. So this may well be NADW, as Sarah and I noted in 1987 (and also Schlesinger later). A reduced SST blip in the 1940s makes the 1910-40 warming larger than the SH (which it currently is not)—but not really enough.
So … why was the SH so cold around 1910? Another SST problem? (SH/NH data also attached.)
This stuff is in a report I am writing for EPRI, so I’d appreciate any comments you (and Ben) might have.
Tom.
Well, that did it for me. Off with their heads.
Good Job Kate.
,
Oh, this is so sweet! Even the MSM will not be able to bury this; if anything, as the fetid smell of scandal keeps wafting from the CRU, the MSM will happily turn on them to feed their news cycles.
Al Gore’s hopes of becoming the first “carbon billionaire” are now rapidly fading; I’m hoping to see the day when the Canadian media starts saying “Oh Suzuki! You got some ‘splaining to do!”
At realclimate they are in full denial mode. It is amusing to watch.
In response to one comment they state:
[Response: This is a typical over-reaction. Perhaps you are unaware that almost all journals demand that you submit names of potential reviewers as part of the submission? … gavin]
Holy smokes, Gavin and company are desperate. The above statement is an outright lie.
