  5. Many moons ago, the CAF was having it’s first divisional exercise in Gagetown since the ’50’s.
    The group I was with arrived by charter and landed at Moncton late in the evening. (Checking thru Calgary’s airport security with personal weapons was interesting).
    Immediately, we descended upon the nearest McD’s just before it closed. With only minimum staff, they handled close to 200 orders.
    I don’t think the poor girls heard so many pick up lines in such a short period of time.

  10. I would think that being able to land this “just right where you want it” would be a skill worth knowing.
    That the members paid for said burgers, proves they weren’t Liberals, and that may be a problem…
    surely on monday, when what passes for journalists working in Ottawa request the Minister of Defense’s opinion on this, I hope he simply states, “their job is to serve and protect, and sometimes to kill, not always in that order… any further questions”?

  13. Yes…and…so they put it down in a field and grabbed something to eat, so what? If they had landed in a field out in the middle of nowhere and had a whiz, nobody would have noticed or cared.
    BTW what kind of chopper is that, it looks vaguely like a Twin Huey, but the engine housing is different to what I recall. Course that was back when dinosaurs walked the earth as my nephew constantly reminds me…

  15. So while our troops chow down on A&W burgers a worthless POS Liberal Party A-Hole ex-politician named Steve Mahoney gobbles up *lobster* dinners at tax payers expense at his part-time Provincial Liberals supplied so called “job”.
    Oh did I mention it was a part-time job?
    Funny because he managed to rack up and bill the Tax payers for 257 per diem work days,which by the way is more working days than there are in an entire year!

You can tell the media are just aching for a scandal, the item in the National Post on-line ended the article by saying:”A spokeswoman for Defence Minister Peter MacKay has yet to issue a comment about the unscheduled takeout order.” Like the Minister of Defence has to okay the menu? Have to make sure those dastardly soldiers don’t super-size the order or anything like that.
    Stuck on stupid, ’cause the MSM are idiots.

    Whatever is wrong with this picture, it sure isn’t the pilot of the chopper ensuring that the crew is fit to fly.
    Good on all of them. I wish I’d been there, I would have bought them all onion rings.
    There better not be ANY disciplinary action on this crew.

  21. furthermore, the munchies can make you light headed. it’s a blood sugar thing.
    maybe they skipped a meal earlier for some technical reasons. whatever. you need not fly light headed or distracted in any way.
    If I had the wherewithal I’d have burgers and rings sent to every &%#$^$# military base in the country.
    is the bloke in the background recording the action or applauding?

  22. Having flown fixed-wing and not had the option of landing near an A&W, I have had to suffer the slings and arrows of Air Force box lunches. These guys took the smarter solution. Brownie points for initiative and forget any stupid Liberal- or MSM-inspired “investigations”. Flying with low blood sugar could have led to an accident or incident, so they did the right thing.

  23. CBC.Ca used the story and photo op to try and bash, A: The military, and B: The Harper Gov. I don’t think it woked. The boys and girls in our forces have to eat, it was great advertising. Now as for their choice of food, well, let’s just say that it does leave a lot to be desired.

  24. I’m upset about this.
    DND provides and plans well balanced nutritional meals, and this guy is out getting junk food. Deplorable! (sarc off)
    I was going to Kenora from Regina for an exercise, travelling with about 30 troops in about 8 vehicles total, including a couple of passenger vans. We stopped overnight in Winnipeg at the Minto Armoury. We didn’t have meals with us, but had money from the meal allowance so that we could eat ‘on the economy’.
    The transport Sgt wouldn’t allow anyone to make a meal run with the vehicles to any nearby place to eat. If you’re familiar with that area, it was probably 8 blocks or more to the nearest restaurant. He said it wasn’t a legitimate use of DND vehs. I had to argue with him that it was in support of troops on exercise, and it was legit. ( I was a Major in the Transport branch at the time).
    Though he evntually turned over the keys after a direct order, he still complained to the CO.

As much as I can appreciate the need and desire for some victuals, I’m wondering if there were any Transport Canada rules governing flight over and landing in residential or business areas such as this without good reason. I somehow don’t think that an A&W teenburger would constitute a good reason for landing if there were restrictions in place. Look at the scorn and rude humor heaped on cops for taking a legitimate coffee break at TH’s.

  26. rmgk …ya gotta remember that SWO’s are just supernumerated corporals…..but then you knew that—-captain is a brief rank for the competant but a career for the walking examples of the Peter principle.
    I agree with your action on this command decision….I would have made sure HE walked…bet he didn’t…

    I found corporals were barely suitable to keep 1st Lieutenants out of body bags….

    CF aircraft have a waiver from CARS regs which prohibit landings in built-up areas except in certain situations.

  31. Oh, great, Glastnost, make me wade through that lovely reading on this Sunday afternoon.
    After some searching (I knew it was sec. 6, but where?) I found this:
    602.13 (1) Except if otherwise permitted under this section, section 603.66 or Part VII, no person shall conduct a take-off, approach or landing in an aircraft within a built-up area of a city or town, unless that take-off, approach or landing is conducted at an airport, heliport or a military aerodrome.
