Analysis: Obviously Madrid, with a virtual deathbed plea from former IOC boss Juan Antonio Samaranch, had a bloc of about 30 votes throughout. In the first round, where a majority is rarely achieved by one city, voters often pick a city for political reasons, to say, ‘hey, we voted for you,’ saving their true choice for later rounds. But Chicago didn’t even get much of that charity. The Windy City’s 18 in the first round is a total face-slap. Not even close. They got outpolled by four votes by Tokyo, which no one gave a snowball’s chance in hell at winning this thing? Amazing.
You have to figure the Obamas and Oprah were worth at least a handful of votes. Without them, would Chicago have even broken into double digits?
In the end, almost all the Tokyo votes from the second round swung Rio’s way in the third.

Think of the magnitude of teh effort that it took to get Obama over to Copenhagen to plead Chicago’s case.
A few years back, I was in London and had to wait in a plane on the tarmac while airspace was cleared for Air Force Frickin One. There were no flights in and out of LHR for a considerable period of time to accomodate this (I recall that it was well over an hour).
There is no doubt that Obama’s trip was unneccesary (and at quite an expense, not to mention the carbon footprint) and would have inconvenienced a significant number of people. However, I doubt that this would be a consideration to the Big O.

I live on Vancouver Island and I can tell you that the beautification of all communities and the upgrading of roads and transportation systems along with the improved accommodation in the hospitality business is incredible.
It may have a big price tag, but we will be left with an even more beautiful place than coastal BC already is.

The Olympics gets funded by Television Rights Contracts, the biggest by far is the US = More 1B, which is paid up front to the city (hence the long term TV rights Contracts).. The payback to the Network is born by advertising sponsors. Sports does have limits; in past Olympics the last 3 days make or break the budget . Who are those sponsors in 2010? How much does NBC write off as goodwill.. they may not be able to cover the Olympics

Looking at the round of votes reminds me of the way political conventions used to be here in the States. Going into the convention, there were 3 -5 front-runners, all of whom had a shot at the gold ring. Nobody knew who, going in.
Then the rounds of voting started. Many states gave their first nomination to a “favorite son”, and so there were no clear winners (just like the Olympics).
Then the power-brokers retired to their smoke-filled rooms for the night and bargained and wheeled and dealed. Afterwards they went back to their delegations and told them who to vote for next. Some members were convinced, others weren’t.
Sometimes the convention went on for several days, with more rounds of voting.
Nowadays, a convention is no more than a victory party for the guys decided upon months before.
I’m sure it comes as a complete surprise that there’s politicking in the Olympics, but still, they’re ahead of us in the voting system.
As for Rio, if Daniela Mercuri isn’t on the program, there’s no justice in the world. Come to think of it, she could probably do the whole opening show, just her and her backup team.
