“the latest spectacular victim of the bad debt crisis and nationwide recession”

“pouring of resources into lavish sets …nothing has been too extreme … rarely denied … however seemingly outrageous. …facade of unlimited financial means …. spending her way into nightmare … took a 24-million-dollar loan from … high-end pawn broker …December 2008… due September 8 … over-leveraged … house in the trendy Greenwich Village … and a second home outside the city .. an apartment on the banks of the Seine in Paris to please her lover….”

  1. someone needs to be GM’d.
Obamassiah loves having his picture taken. Maybe she’ll immerse him in the milk leftover from Whoopi’s shoot.

  2. this creates a new category of lavishness, spendthrift and fall from grace.
    no precedent here.
hint: all those iconic and recognizable photos? each one represents hundreds of duds. my ratio of good shot to dud was around 2 in 36, ie I could count on about 2 really good pics out of a roll of 36 exposures to be worth enlarging.
I still have the Konica T4 SLR I got back in the late 70s. only use it for B&W stuff.
annie annie annie. well, lots of people have 2nd and 3rd careers. my eldest sister started out as an RN, then professional photog, now she’s practicing law somewhere in Vancouver area.

  3. One more liberano gets her just desserts.
I will be honest and say I never heard of her til just now.

  4. “Budget is not something that enters into her consciousness, but it is worth it because at the end of the day, she gives you an image that nobody else can,” said Wintour.”
That description could easily and correctly be applied to Barrack Hussein Obama.
I have met many people just like Annie, with the exception that they hadn’t ever earned any real money. They did however, manage spend a hell of a lot of other people’s money rather than give it up and get a job.
They were ‘artists’. In the end they have no friends because no friendship can endure being all about one and merely financed and supported by the other.
Too bad about Annie being such an idiot though, I have always admired her work. But I equally admire the work of one Annies’ contemporaries, the more subtle, great photographer, Mary Ellen Mark. Check her out sometime. I think she still has money.
    Mary Ellen Mark

  5. And I do not believe she is a victim of the financial downturn, rather she is victim of her own stupidity. Great talent does not necessarily come with great brains. How many times have we seen that?
She was going broke long before the meltdown last year.

  6. that’s why so many people hire financial planners- then there’s scandals about those guys too. Ah- the problem of handling too much money- but I’d still take the problem.

  7. Budget is not something that enters into her consciousness
Leibovitz took a 24-million-dollar loan … using her own photographs as collateral.
And in the very first paragraph, she’s described as a victim, which makes no sense. If you volunteer, you cannot be a victim.

  8. That’s too bad, (not saying its not her fault), she is a very talented artist. Although as someone once said “great art is a product of a tortured soul”

  9. Well, I know I’ve seen her work in magazines, but it’s never made enough of an impression on me for me to to actually care what becomes of her or her body of work.
    Too bad, so sad.

  10. Photography is one of those funny trades where you have to differentiate or qualify yourself with the word, ‘professional’.
You never hear someone refer to themselves as a ‘professional lawyer’ or a ‘professional chemist’.
I’ve been in the business for more than 30 years and the difference between the professional and the amateur has always been the ability to both earn and maintain one’s business and lifestyle through the medium.
Annie has a good eye and knows how to market. But she doesn’t know how to manage money and without that – no matter how much you make – you don’t have a viable business.
And if, despite solid revenue, your business isn’t viable, you’re really not behaving as a ‘professional’.

  11. What’s so great about her photographs? I don’t see anything spectacular. I take better pictures and without wasting milk and millions of $$$.
And you Kate, you are a superb artist. Undiscovered, sadly. Just seeing the pic of the painting of the dog you did tells me you are very talented.
See what hiring the right kind of PR can do for the utter untalented and useless, whereas real talent like yours is largely ignored. Hope this will make you post a pic of another painting.

  12. Yeah, Annie Leibovitz is a great photographer but, no she can’t handle her money. And that is indeed a pity because the number one thing an aspiring “anything” should learn is how to keep a roof over your head and fed while pursuing your career/dreams. Even those who don’t use the government handouts as a way to finance their life need to learn the “Economics 101”, if only to keep your staff that handle that stuff honest.
In reflection though, it does seem like a re-occurring meme where “artists”, either sculpture, photographer, painter, musician, etc, cannot grasp anything that is not directly about their art.

  13. Momar @11:51 – that Mary Ellen Mark work (I’d never heard of her) is fabulous. The Christina Ricci pic. is literally breathtaking.

  14. … those two girls on the left are clearly the ghosts from “The Shining”, though.

  15. Twice, this article refers to Leibovitz as a “victim,” when she’s your classic self-indulgent overspender.

  16. Hope they dont show Yoko and John’s butt as the “iconic” photo. Ive seen enough of those three butts for a lifetime.

  17. “Hope they dont show Yoko and John’s butt…”
Where Yoko is concerned, a camera is a lesser evil than a tape recorder.

  18. It’s the nature of high rollers. Money coming out of their ears, luxury beyond reason and Zot!! Reality strikes. Just heard yesterday of a high roller on the coast that lost it all. He’s in the Psych ward.

  19. Well, Holy Cow, who’da thunk that one must make payments for borrowed money!!!
Pay up or fess up, babe. It’s the same rules for all of us.

  20. curious_george at August 23, 2009 11:33 AM
Are you the self-same curious george that appears on WUWT??
    RW.

  21. She is an incredibly talented artist. This is a very sad downfall for someone who has worked very hard and risen to the top of her field.

  22. I find that a truly gifted photographer can also act as a diplomat. without the baggage of officail status as a diplomat. i.e. they are allowed into the ‘inner circle’ I suppose so that the participants in the event can if they so choose immortalize it on film.
to RW: I’m the curious george of the childrens’ book series: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curious_George
to which I was introduced when I hired a fellow university student to tutor me in French and she brought a translation so I could play Q&A. all in french of course.
maybe this is my chance to put my 63 landscape and 63 portrait orientation enlargements on the market. LOL !!! I got a real interesting one of the polar bear at Buffalo Zoo shaking its head in a twisting fashion after emerging from the pool. stuff like that. to get those really interesting shots you need to know from experience without ‘double checking’ at the last moment whether to twist the lens counter- or clock-wise to bring the subject in focus.
I mastered the trick of using my left eye *outside* the viewfinder to see the ‘big picture’ especially moving targets, and at the same time my right eye thru the view finder with finger at the ready when the critters or bicycles or whatever moved into the frame.
annie annie annie. your collection is now doomed to be permanently spread out in private hands, you foolish, vain, artsy fartsy woman you.

  23. Edward Teach, at 6:04 P.M.: I’m declaring you the winner of this thread. Too true!

  24. Well, Leibovitz will still be able to take photos in the future and will of course, own the new ones.
Too bad she wasn’t smart enough to hire a financial manager (although she still would have to have listened to him.)
Leibovitz’s work is truly great in her genre. She has produced more than her share of iconic images and her technical skill is every bit as impressive as her artistic vision.
It really is too bad that artists generally are completely lacking in logical/mathematical ability. They tend to be a bit flakey (which is where the artistic part comes in.) They’re emotional thinkers rather than logical thinkers. Every artsy type needs a good conservative to run their lives for them… lol.
I bought my first D-SLR last year (although I used to use my dad’s old film Nikon a couple of decades ago.) It’s a lot harder than it looks to get good images and I’m a bit of a perfectionist so I’m very critical of my work.

  25. Certainly her circle of uber-liberal layabouts in NYC will step up and help Annie. Maybe not. Another example of willful obtuseness, e. g., Michael Jackson.

  26. The only “victims” in her story are the ones who won’t be repaid the money they loaned her.

  27. In future we msut have better artist and film maker and music and actors among Muslim christian and Jewish
