    Why is this still “news”? Mark Steyn’s “America Alone” addressed this issue in depth more than a year ago. I find it doubly ironic that you posted this today, as the front section of the National Post had an article about a French woman’s book “40 Reasons Not To Have Babies”. The article, with no further explanation, stated that France was having a “mini baby boom”. (That’s a small boom in births, not a boom in dwarf infants, just to be clear.) What it didn’t say is that boom is composed mostly of Muslim babies; native French women have one of the lowest birth rates in Europe, just as native Quebec women have the lowest birth rate in Canada. This idiot Corinne Maier (who is, apparently, ageless, since her face would stop time) is not only unaware that her people are dieing out, she’s encouraging them to do it faster.

16. Rather than focusing on Islam and Muslims, what if one focuses on the basic infrastructure of what is going on?
    First, you have a world that is moving from the economic and intellectual advances of the West to a global economy. Just briefly, the economic and intellectual advances of the West were due to the richness of the European biome (the envt; the rich soil, mild temperatures, regular rainfall) which led to population increases. And this required intellectual progress, technologically and societal, to support this population.
    Economically, this increase in population leads to the emergence of a middle class. The free class, allowed to use their reason, and made up of people who are free to question. And innovate, develop new technologies to support the continuing increase of population. A middle class, able to interact within a market economy.
    Second, A key problem in this global transformation is the Middle East, with a poor biome (poor soil, no water, extreme heat), capable of supporting only a stable, no change, rigidly organized population. A sustenance economy (small local crops, small animals). Two class – where the Owner Class is God (Allah), where there is an elite ‘bureaucracy’ and all are subservient.
    Oil distorts this system. Rather than enriching the population, the existing leadership maintains the two-class hierarchy and enriches themselves. The population increases but the political structure refuses to transform into a three-class system and develop a middle class of free thinkers and innovators. People leave…for Europe. But, they take their cultural mindset of dependency on the govt, rejection of change, rejection of reason..with them.
    Europe, in the grip of a postwar multiculturalism, accepts them.
    Third – the emergence of China, India..and Brazil, into the modern industrial economy. These areas are not trapped in the mindset of a 7th c peasant system, as is the Middle East, and are eager to scientifically and economically advance.
    Point four is the requirement in this emerging global system for a reasonably cohesive world economy. That is, all the parts have to network and interact.
    And point five is the existence of reason, a basic aspect of ‘being human’ – just as the existence of emotions that can either assist or blind reason are also basic human attributes.
    What can happen? One part of this world rejects a middle class. Rejects the necessity for freedom of thought, inventions, a market economy. It wants a two-class system, where the elite ‘own’ the resources and the rest are dependent.
    The problem is: the population increase. Population increase requires freedom of thought to develop new technologies to deal with the requirements of an increased population. If you have a population that rejects Reason and Science, and yet is increasing – they cannot do this for themselves. The Middle East purchases its science from the West. I’m going to speculate that this will have to change.
    Can the immigrants to Europe transform Europe from its innovative capacity, i.e., destroy the middle class? But then – who would support Europe?
    China? India?
    I’m going to speculate – that there will be a generation long re-alignment, with lots of local wars, to deal with this problem. I think that the global population is too large to reject and inhibit the use of Reason and Science. We cannot, as a world, return to the pre-industrial era, and back to the era of ‘cave-men’, so to speak.
    The transformation of the Middle East and the insertion of democracy, a Bush legacy, is a major key to this continuation of the Right-To-Reason in the world. But, Europe has to reject the insertion into its midst of a passive, dependent class that insists on being supported without contributing to the economy.
    Meanwhile, the emergence of China and India into a middle class economy, will strengthen Europe’s ability and resolve to fight this internal ‘cancer’.

    What has happened to so many of us, and particularly those in the left, is that they have become intellectually lazy, and resort to simply presenting their opinion and expecting others to accept it. Just because they said it. We’ve got examples here (T, bleet, etc). Then, since they don’t know how to support their opinion with facts and logic, they resort to the easiest tactic: emotions. Bullying, name-calling.
    But what is going on now, as the world structurally transforms from the old Western nation-states-plus-colonies; to a global economy, will take time and yes, wars. There are, I think, many bridges to cross.
    There’s the idiotic attempt to make the industrial nations of the West support the nations/populations who are unable and or unwilling to self-organize themselves into industrialism. So, the West has essentially supported the Middle East states, enabling them to remain without that vital free-thinking, free-acting middle class and entrench themselves deeper into frozen time. As I said, Bush’s act of taking out one of these ice-cubes and enabling democracy is a key tactic of opening up this area to modernization.
    But, the people who fled the ME and are now living in Europe, expecting to live as a dependent class, unwilling to be a middle class and free-thinking, flexible, innovative and insisting that god/govt support them..well, Europe has to reject this.
    As for Africa, it will take time. A major problem in Africa, as in the Middle East, has been the impoverished biome, with problems with thin soil, too little or too much water preventing major crop growth, temperature problems etc..which led to a continent whose people could only live in low production sustenance tribal systems. But colonization changed that, and brought the technologies to Africa. However, the post-colonial era resulted in them reverting to tribalism, rejecting a middle class – and it’s a disaster.
    A key strategy has to be to stop supporting them in this way. Africa has to move out of a two-class tribal system and into a three class system. It must have a middle class. Islam, by the way, as we know, rejects thought, reason, science..and therefore, a middle class.
    Therefore, Global Warming, cap and trade are nothing but a transference of wealth..which keeps the undeveloped countries..undeveloped. And reduces the capacity to the developed countries to innovate.
    As for the marxism and the other collectivist ideologies, we’ll always have some people actively wanting such a framework. It’s utopian. Such ideologies (socialism, fundamental religions) are based in emotions not reason. They inform us that IF we band together and give up our individual identities and desires THEN, utopia on earth will exist.
    Nope. It won’t. Certainly, living in a fundamentalist authoritarian society means that doubt is gone. We have no doubts about anything. The god/govt will provide for everything. This rejection of doubt, a risk-free society – the Obama Dream – is pure fiction. And pure arrogance to assume that we can control everything. It cannot exist because reality is not fiction but real..and we cannot control all the biological realities, from the one-cell to the multi-cell.
    shaken – yes, the transformation will certainly not be smooth. Changes from one structure to another are never gradual (I’m not a Darwinist) but catastrophic and extreme. But, the world economic system has to change. The global population is too large for only one part to be middle class and the rest to be without such freedom.
    No, this change won’t end innovation. The old two-class sytem in the Middle East is desperately trying to maintain this status quo but they’ll have to change and network with the rest of the world. And above all, Europe cannot permit the shadow of this two-class system to re-emerge in Europe with a dependent welfare class is Muslims.
    And don’t forget China and India – who are both moving rapidly into a modern economy and political system with a vibrant middle class.
    So, I’m not that pessimistic but, there will be wars against the agenda of retaining a collectivist two-class ideology.

Yes, the capacity for -culture- is innate, the capacity to solve problems and manipulate things is innate. Mandatory, in fact. The only people who don’t express these things have major brain damage.     However. Reason and the scientific method are -not-. They are cultural inventions just like mathematics, writing, the wheel and packet-switching networks.
    Humans lived for >250,000 years without doing much more than cave painting, according to the archaeological record. 10,000 years ago in Iran they started building permanent things like houses and barns, and that set of innovations spread world-wide far faster than a physical change in human nature can account for. It was an invention. Its cultural, not innate.
    Reason is learned, or not. Unfortunately it has become fashionable in some circles not to learn it, and to lean back on the accomplishments of our ancestors. While despising them, of course.

24. no, phantom, I totally disagree. Reasoning is innate and most certainly not cultural. All members of our one species, homo sapiens sapiens, have this attribute.
    By ‘reasoning’ I don’t mean the so-called ‘scientific method’ of the West. I mean the capacity to model, in one’s mind, the environment, figure out how to interact with an control this environment and thus, plan and anticipate. This capacity to reason is valid for all peoples, whether hunter-gatherers or basic sustenance agriculturalists or industrialists.
    Writing is only found in societies and economies with very large populations that require a mnemonic or memory device. You don’t need writing in smaller populations. Therefore, writing is not a strategy that developed, on its own, in different populations all over the world – when the population reached a certain threshold. These populations were most certainly not in touch with each other (Egypt, China, Inca, Aztec, Mayan)..but they were all similar ‘irrigation’ style economies with large populations.
    Yes, human were primarily hunter-gatherers from their origin. Such an economy enables a small population to survive; they are migratory – and very skilled at what they do. This requires reason, whether in the act of tracking the hunt, of inventing a spear or bow, using poison for that arrow, developing societal norms by which to live.
    Agriculture developed about 10,000 years ago, and there are multiple explanations for its emergence. We really don’t know why; my own view was a climate change that enabled grasslands and farming. Agriculture requires a settled population, who must develop new technologies to carry out those practices – whether it be irrigation or slash-and-burn cultivation etc.
    No, the agricultural practices that emerged in the Middle East did not ‘spread’ or ‘diffuse’. People invent these practices on their own, as needed. It is quite incorrect to assume that a particular technology only has one origin and only becomes worldwide by diffusion. It is most certainly not ‘cultural’. People will invent as the need arises.
    The development of a technology depends, first, on the biome or environment. You can use a deep plough in Western Europe but not in the Middle East or Africa – the soil is too thin. In Africa, there were no large animals available for domestication (try it with a rhino or wildebeest); that left only humans doing the hard labour and kept populations small.
    The explanation for the rise of technology and the ‘scientific method’ of the West lies, I maintain, in its biome (envt) – that rich environment that enabled the increase of population such that the peoples had to invent new technologies to extract ever more sustenance and enable these large populations to organize and live. This biome, the richest on the planet, is found only in Western Europe – and most of our academics ignore this..and instead, try to explain the rise of the West as based on some ‘cultural dominance’ or special ‘racial’ attribute.
    No- it was reality..nature..that required innovation to support a larger and constantly increasing population. The people of the West used their reason..to innovate. And this reasoning capacity is basic to all humans. Admittedly, we differ in our individual expressions of this capacity – but, as an average, we are all the same over the planet.

I recall some years ago seeing some terrible movie about high school hijinks,one of many cheap imitations of “Porky’s”, the highlight of which was sabotaging a girls swim team by unstitching all the seams in the swimsuits and sewing them up again with water-soluble thread.
