Help Rename The NDP

Really, why stop at “New”?

Nearly 50 years after the New Democratic Party was founded, its members are soon to decide whether to lop “new” from their name.
The question is whether to do it abruptly in two weeks at a convention in Halifax or to put it to a consultation process and make the decision in two years at the half-century mark.
Whether the NDP should be renamed the “Democratic Party” promises a lively debate and vote by about 1,000 delegates at the party’s national biennial convention in Halifax Aug. 14-16th.

Yes, it’s a contest!

My thoughts exactly, Lev. But conversely, the Conservative Party is not conservative. The Liberal Party is not liberal. What is a voter to do?

  4. Dipps and Doddles Party of Canada – sorry too early in the morning. Great contest. Isn’t it amazing how helpful Canadians are to their fellow citizens. Can we submit these to the NDP for approval and win prizes?

Saves changing old stuff and buying new stuff. Just apply stickers and reuse. Very Green.

  8. The Labour Party
This description from wikipedia fits a lot of what the Dippers are about:
“The name Labour Party, or similar is used by several political parties around the world, particularly common in countries of the Commonwealth of Nations. They are most commonly, but not exclusively, social democrats or democratic socialists and have been traditionally allied to the Labour movement and trade unions. Many labour parties are members of the Socialist International”

  11. IngSoc.
And rename the leader ‘Big Brother’.
Jack Layton even has the moustache.

  12. They are irrelevant, whatever the name. They are the same frumpy, dowdy canuck political spinster who has waited decades for a date, but nobody has obliged.
Doubtless the name will include the word “democratic”, or perhaps “Canadian People”, “freedom” or maybe (less likely) “republic”.
Mark Steyn has observed – quite rightly so – that the most repressive political regimes on earth always contain combinations of these words. Examples: German Democratic Republic (E. Germany), People’s Republic of China, etc. The country that espouses “the people” in their political name usually are the furthest from giving them any consideration, and “Democratic” parties containing the name are usually anything but. I’m not saying the NDP is in league with these monsters, but it approves in principle of the same narrow-minded, government-mandated statist focus that is employed in the Big Leagues.

  18. Not new. Not very democratic. And not anybody you’d want to party with.
And all three of those have been true for many years. I’d just as soon they didn’t change anything so that nobody’s gulled into thinking that they’ve really changed.

  20. In all seriousness, here are the Ingredients For The Name of a Socialist Party:
    – Socialist
    – Progressive
    – Democratic
    – Left
    – Solidarity
Any combination of the above – with “Party” (cuz “alliance” is tainted) – will be the name of the new federal leftist bunch.
